Egypt's military announced on national television that it has stepped in to "safeguard the country" on Thursday and assured protesters that President Hosni Mubarak will meet their demands in the strongest indication yet that Egypt's longtime leader has lost power. In Washington, the CIA chief said there was a "strong likelihood" Mubarak will step down Thursday.
The dramatic announcement showed that the military was taking control after 17 days of protests demanding Mubarak's immediate ouster spiraled out of control. Gen. Hassan al-Roueini, military commander for the Cairo area, told thousands of protesters in central Tahrir Square, "All your demands will be met today." Some in the crowd held up their hands in V-for-victory signs, shouting "the people want the end of the regime" and "Allahu akbar," or "God is great," a victory cry used by secular and religious people alike.

Also just heard that the army has prevented Mubarak from transferring powers to the VP.

The military put him in after Sadat. They are now taking him out (of power.)

It is a clear sign that Mubarak is firmly in power & firmly controls the military.
No it means one of the generals will take his place, and that is how we got the last two leaders of egypt. It is a better result than obammas. If it is true.

The best alternative IMHO, far better than the Muslim Brotherhood getting its filthy hands in there.
What if the announcement will be that he has turned day to day operations of the country to the Military until elections are held?

I agree. But there seems to be a consensus with the liberal comments under the article is that this was a win for democracy. LOL
I didn’t see any Egyptians casting votes at a ballot box. Aren’t liberals supposed to be the educated ones??? Too Funny.

Crazy. Wonder if all the “protesters” will now go home. Then what will they do with no money and no jobs and no food?
What it means is that things stay the same. Good for the U.S. and Israel. Bad for democracy in Egypt. Bad for the Muslim Brotherhood.

I agree with you... That is what makes all the comments that we just witnessed a win for democracy in Egypt so laughable.
