DNI Clapper: Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood 'largely secular'
Politco ^ | 02/10/2011 | Josh Gerstien

Posted on 02/10/2011 10:48:30 AM PST by OldDeckHand

During a House Intelligence Committee hearing Thursday, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper called Egypt's branch of the Muslim Brotherhood movement "largely secular."

In response to questioning from Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.) about the threat posed by the group, Clapper suggested that the Egyptian part of the Brotherhood is not particularly extreme and that the broader international movement is hard to generalize about.

"The term 'Muslim Brotherhood'...is an umbrella term for a variety of movements, in the case of Egypt, a very heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence and has decried Al Qaeda as a perversion of Islam," Clapper said. "They have pursued social ends, a betterment of the political order in Egypt, et cetera.....In other countries, there are also chapters or franchises of the Muslim Brotherhood, but there is no overarching agenda, particularly in pursuit of violence, at least internationally."

Clap on, clap off. Obviously off right now.

And even if they were ‘largely secular’ what difference would that make when they clearly pursue violence to achieve their ends when necessary. Case in point: the assassination of Anwar Sadat.

Oh I would agree. If largely secular means stoning rape victims, mutilating women’s sex organs, selling them into martial slavery to 60 year old men at the age of 14, baring them from attending school or working, keeping them at home, or only allowing them to venture out if every square inch of their bodies are covered under the penalty of being stoned, then by all means, the Muslim Brotherhood is secular.

“During a House Intelligence Committee hearing Thursday, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper called Egypt's branch of the Muslim Brotherhood movement “largely secular.”

WTF???

This is straight out of one of my current text books: “terrorism: an interdisciplinary perspective”

Pg 26
“The Islamic Jihad
Although Hizbollah found an ally in the Islamic Jihad when it came to the Bekaa Valley in 1982, the Iranian Revolution was not directly responsible for the birth of this terrorist group. Islamic Jihad began as a political movement inside the Muslim Brotherhood. Actually there are several Islamic Jihads, and they are mostly nationalistic factions of the same movement. The group that receives the greatest attention emerged after the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and it came from the link with Hizbollah. This Islamic Jihad perfected three tactical innovations of terrorism: a dynamic “umbrella” organizational structure, the use of suicide bombers, and the shift away from hijackings and hostage-taking to individual kidnappings.”

The umbrella spoken of here is the Muslim Brotherhood. Members of all these separate factions move in and out from under this umbrella as they see fit, and in consistency with the groups goals as a whole. This makes these groups hard to track, and makes it harder to track individuals within groups as they frequently shift around. The most consistent common denominator however is the Muslim Brotherhood. The goal is to remain as hard to trace and track as possible and to conceal Iranian government involvement in all of it.

It ALL goes back to Iran, one way or another. Not religous my ass, its ALL based and justified by the religion of Islam. Power mongers USE it as a modivational tool, and use it as a means of control.

Thanks for posting this article. More evidence some of the folks we hire to defend our Constitution take us for chumps and are selling us down the river.

Wonder how Clapper feels when he looks into the mirror.

Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie, October 2010:

Arab and Muslim regimes are betraying their people by failing to confront the Muslim’s real enemies, not only Israel but also the United States. Waging jihad against both of these infidels is a commandment of Allah that cannot be disregarded.
All Muslims…need to understand that (what) the (Muslim) nation seeks can only be attained through jihad and sacrifice and by raising a jihadi generation that pursues death just as the enemies pursue life.

Qur’an:47:4 …you (are) commanded by Allah to continue carrying out Jihad against the unbelieving infidels until they submit to Islam.

The Muslim Brotherhood is “largely secular?” That’s about as believable as...

1917 — Post-Revolution Russia:

“No worries, your Highness. You, the Tsarina and your family should consider yourselves our guests. Now, sleep well, as we have planned enjoyable activities involving all of you for tomorrow morning.”

1975 — Post-Revolution Cambodia:

“All those who have experience in business or government, please come forward and identify yourselves to the peasant soldiers of Brother Number One Comrade Pol Pot... Angkha needs your skills to conduct the affairs of Democratic Kampuchea.”

Holy carp!

This guy is clueless.

James Clapper, director of national intelligence, looked stumped when asked by Diane Sawyer on ABC about the arrests of 12 suspects in London and elsewhere around Britain earlier this week. "London?", Clapper asked, looking puzzled.

"Was he under oath? Lying under oath is a felony. He should be in jail."

Not to split hairs, but...lying under oath in a criminal or civil trial can indeed be a felony - perjury. Lying to Congress is a slightly different beast, insomuch that it is called Criminal Contempt of Congress - and I believe it's "only" a misdemeanor, but I'm not positive without looking it up.

Here's the rub when an administration official lies to Congress - Congress can't prosecute anyone. Only the Executive Branch can prosecute people. If Congress believes someone has lied to them, then they have to refer the matter to a federal prosecutor (I think the US attorney for the District of Columbia), who then decides to prosecute, or not. Most legal scholars believe that Congress can't compel prosecution because of separation of powers problems.

For this reason, and several others, I don't believe anyone has actually ever been prosecuted for Criminal Contempt of Congress, whereas many (dozens and dozens) have been found to be in contempt of Congress, by Congress. But these are generally pursued civilly, and not criminally.
