The Obama administration was embarrassingly wrongfooted when the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak confounded expectations by refusing to leave office.
Mubarak's speech came just hours after Barack Obama and the director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, appeared to give credence to the rumours that the Egyptian president was heading for the exit.
Obama has been putting pressure on Mubarak since last week to stand down straight away, but Mubarak, in a televised address tonight, said he would not bow to international pressure, a direct snub to the US president.
Mubarak's response provides a graphic illustration of America's slow decline from its status as the world's sole superpower to a position where it is unable to decisively influence events in Egypt, in spite of that country being one of the biggest recipients of US military aid.
Since the uprising began, the Obama administration has shifted from solidly supporting Mubarak, to suggesting a few days later that he should go now, only to back him at the weekend to remain in office until the autumn a decision that the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, reversed hours later when she threw US support behind the Egyptian vice-president, Omar Suleiman. But even support for Suleiman may leave US policy trailing behind events in Egypt, with the vice-president seen as too close to Mubarak.

His scheme to eviscerate, destroy all that is great, glorious of our Republic all that we created to make America the greatest country ever, seems to be going according as planned.
Is there nothing we can do to stop this American nightmare?
Nothing new here.
The Iranians told Jimmuh to take a hike back in the 70s.
Baraq is doing a fine job of following in Jimmuh’s footsteps.
Obama would be outmaneuvered by an intoxicated snail.
We’re talking the ultimate definition of a “clueless b*st*rd” here.
Okay, someone explain to me...
How can you be wrong-footed when you have both of them in your mouth?
“Mubarak’s response provides a graphic illustration of America’s slow decline from its status as the world’s sole superpower to a position where it is unable to decisively influence events in Egypt”
Um, no. It’s a graphic illustration that our foreign policy is being run by the Apple Dumpling Gang who can’t make up their mind.
“Since the uprising began, the Obama administration has shifted from solidly supporting Mubarak, to suggesting a few days later that he should go now, only to back him at the weekend to remain in office until the autumn a decision that the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, reversed hours later when she threw US support behind the Egyptian vice-president, Omar Suleiman.”
See what I mean, Vern?
We ceased being a Republic a long time before Obama and his push over the edge into socialism. At best we have been a Democracy since the 1850’s. At best.
‘Slow decline’ my eye. It’s been a steep skid since the anti-American Marxist, ACORN and the knee-pad press finessed the last election.
Yes, the Iranians told Jimmy to take a hike.
And now Obama is taking that hike by direction of the same government.
“Oh, we can deal with the Muslim Brotherhood.”
Barack, you have got to be kidding!
Say hello to Ahmadinnerjacket the next time you parley with him.
For the Guardian to so emphatically admonish someone of O’s
considerable leftist, Anti-American credentials is news.
If anyone has a brain it is obvious Obama is allied with the Muslim Brotherhood. He is a radical Muslim lying about it in accordance with Islamic Law.
I would snicker, but it hits too close to home.
Perhaps wincing would be more in order.
Obama is dancing to Soros’s fiddle.
The Russians and the Chinese are salivating.
Obama reeks of indecision, incompetence, and impotence. Amazingly, much of the American electorate still can’t smell it.
PLEEEEZ, America, NEVER nominate and elect someone because of how they look EVER EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
No one was listening when we tried to tell everyone that he was possibly ineligible, that a few had lost their lives to get him where he is now, that he has a Down Low problem, that he is extremely Muslim-affiliated, that he is anti-American, and that he has always been Marxist. NO ONE BELIEVED US. They just saw a teleprompter expert with cafe-au-lait skin. That is ALL they saw.
God help us all when something goes really wrong and this crew fails as miserably as this.
The Guardian, it turns out, is racis. Now we know.
Obammy is just Jimmuh on steroids — twice as Marxist and twice as incompetent.
Where is the Obama who said we just needed to “talk” to regimes and they would bow to him?
“For the Guardian to so emphatically admonish someone of Os
considerable leftist, Anti-American credentials is news.”
It would be a sign of the apocalypse- if it weren’t so extraordinarily well deserved.
0bama was skunked like nothing I’ve ever seen.
All the major communist groups here are in full support of the revolution. No surprise who Obama would side with.
But there is good news.
Obama has stopped smoking and doesn’t color his hair. According to his wife.
Obama is such a wimp, he probably cabled back to Addullah, ‘The next time I see you, I’ll bow even deeper’.
Thank you for your comment. Very eloquently expressed.
Well loosely, I agree. Beyond that I’m a conscientious objector. ;^)
The only way my ballot would be counted as a vote for him, would be if some of my spit accurately wound up in his square, and it caused a chad to buckle.
I am laughing over here-' intoxicated snail ' - that is a great visual!
News Flash: Mubarak’s not resigning and they were all wrong!
“He basically said: I am an Arab warrior, not a community organizer. That speech should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the Middle East.”
I wonder if this is the new spin?
Suleiman Has All Authority, President Mubarak Gave Up All His Power - Egyptian Ambassador to U.S.
“America’s slow decline from its status as the world’s sole super power to a position where it’s unable to decisively influence events in Egypt..”
Thats so sad but it’s true.
Imagine what would be going on with the press right now if GW were sitting where that failed community organizer presently sits and has made the same gaffes.
Good for Mubarak. Why should he bow down to a little pissant leader. Excuse me, but we've not had a slow decline but a rapid tumult under this mickey mouse admin.
That puts it into a really harsh white light. 'Arab warrior vs community organizer'.
Seems the man who arrogantly refused to negotiate with his real enemies (the republicans) by cutting them off at a WH round table with the words "I WON" is learning how to eat crow. Hope its served up raw, feathered and rotting.
LOL I knew when I clicked in this article it was not ABC News. ABC reporting a leak from within the WH that this was a sure thing Mubarak was out; sure leaves them with egg on their faces.
They are probably spinning the Obama muslim brotherhood is good propaganda like MSNBC did.
It's not about him being a 'wimp' (which he is), or 'naive', or 'incompetent'. It's a matter where his loyalties lie. The SOB is as much anti-Israel as he is anti-American.
LMAO. Do you have anymore?

Now hopefully the GOP leaders will be encouraged to treat him like the little spoiled brat that he has grown up to be. His legacy as president is going to be worse than Carter.
I kinda make them up as I go along.
You (or any FReeper) can freely use any you like from this address (no attribution necessary):
He is going to make another announcement this evening. I wish he would just shut up!
Moses Barack vs. Pharaoh Mubarak.
I understand that there are some that believe that he is a one termer, however, they are four groups that are going to do everything in their power to see that he is re-elected. They are:1. The Democrat Party. 2. the main stream media. 3. The Republican Party.24. The idiots and traitors to America.
Nice sentiment, but does the phrase "She's GORGEOUS" sound familiar?
If so, (and it should), perhaps you might want to rephrase that.
As I recall, an ex-actor got a lot of votes because many thought him to be 'a nice, well-spoken, good looking guy'.
