Giffords is seen as shoo-in for Kyl’s seat
The Washington Times ^ | 02/11/2011 | Valerie Richardson

Posted on 02/11/2011 10:51:11 AM PST by speciallybland

Any discussion of who’s likely to succeed outgoing Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona needs to factor in the following: If Rep. Gabrielle Giffords wants the seat, it’s hers.

The three-term Democratic congresswoman explored the idea of running for the Senate seat in the event of Mr. Kyl‘s retirement before she was shot Jan. 8 at a constituent meet-and-greet in Tucson. Her rehabilitation from a gunshot wound to the head reportedly is proceeding faster than expected.

Mr. Kyl announced Thursday that he would not seek a fourth term in 2012. If Ms. Giffords decides she’s game for a Senate run and if her health permits, she would be virtually impossible to defeat, said Bruce Merrill, Arizona State University professor emeritus and longtime pollster.

“If one assumes she’d be healthy enough to run, there’s nobody who could beat her,” said Mr. Merrill. “Now she’s got 100 percent name identification and 100 percent sympathy from the public. If she was well enough and she wanted the nomination, I don’t think there’s any question.”

The thinking may be that the sympathy for her would keep Republicans from criticizing her stands and votes on the issues.

The tragic story, and her expected recovery from the shooting, may just be enough to win her a statewide election.

And on that alone.... she is eminently qualified.

Yes her recovery has a long way to go. All of this assumes that she recovers and can serve in Congress again.

And if that happens, she’s the Dems. #1 candidate in Arizona for the Senate.

Based on sympathy, she may not have to conduct an arduous campaign. She might not be expected to travel around the state and do as many campaign appearances as other candidates. The MSM will give her favorable reporting. She has 100% name recognition and sympathy because of the shooting.

12 hours after the shooting, she still had more brain function than most of those in the Democrat Caucus..

So yes. While they would have much preferred to have her coffin to stand on, they'll gladly fight over who gets to wheel her around and use her victimhood status for future votes and legislation.

Regardless of her physical or mental condition.

The democrap party has proven that they can run a watermelon and the powers that be will insure it gets elected in some regions. I mean, Lautenberg is as near to a mindless automaton as one can get and still get them dressed for the day! I am not knocking Gifford’s recovery, in fact I pray she recovers completely. But her mental accuity has little to do with the globalist vermin getting her elected to do their bidding.

I would not assume that. I have seen a lot of false optimism regarding brain injuries and strokes. Being able to say “toast” at breakfast does not prove a lot. Having said that, I wish her the best.

Giffords barely won her congressional seat. It took several recounts to get the win.

So far she has uttered a single word and now they are making her a senator.

My guess is that she still has the feeding tube, the breathing tube and the weakness on her right side is extensive.

The msm can create any scenario they wish, but eventually the truth will out.

Her husband stated.......gabbi would have wanted him to fly the shuttle. Those very words say it all. She would have it she could have spoken but for now she is able to make that statement.

But the seasoned citizens did send Juan McShame back to the Senate, didn’t they?

Maybe with that logic I could put my cute little King Charles Caviler Spaniel up for office. People might have sympathy, but they will expect competency. She will need to speak and appear in public and if she stutters or walks with a spastic gait, people will have legitimate doubts over her ability to carry out her job duties. Let’s see how she does in a debate or in a Town Hall forum before we handicap her odds.

It’s amazing how much you can do with something like the shooting in “Tuscon” when it is properly exploited. I agree that she will be a “shoo-in”. Most of the people living in this country aren’t very bright and they have no clue as to the meaning of the phrase, “Elections have consequences”. Morons.

While she has had an amazing recovery (if the press reports can be believed) from a gun shot to the brain, any major brain trauma such as that leaves significant changes in one’s emotions and abilities.

The voters of Arizona should carefully learn what she is like post recovery before voting he into a 6 year term as a US Senator. Otherwise, they may vote in a figure head who is manipulated by staff, the Democrat caucus and her emotions.
