LONGPORT NJ – Two residents are facing weapons charges related to the unlawful possession of a military-style Colt AR-15 assault rifle, according to police.
The two were arrested Saturday, Feb. 5 after a month-long investigation.
Walter H. Westcoat, 84, of South 33rd Avenue, was arrested and charged with two counts of unlawful possession of an assault weapon. Westcoat was also charged with unlawful possession of large-capacity magazines.
Arrested at the same time was Mary J. Landry, 54, who resides at the same residence. Landry was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of an unlicensed shotgun. According to Lt. William Hewitt, Landry did have a gun lock on the shotgun.
The arrests culminated an investigation by Ptl. Pierce Shaud and Sgt. Charles Adams and under the direction of Hewitt, who explained Monday that the Colt AR-15 was a legal weapon prior to the ban on assault weapons in New Jersey enacted in 1990.
“Once they were banned, anyone who owned one had one year to make that gun inoperable or it would be considered illegal. It is also illegal to have in your possession large-capacity magazines that hold more than 30 rounds of ammunition,” Hewitt said.
Westcoat and Landry were released on their own recognizance with instructions from Judge John Rosenberger to have no contact with one another.
Hewitt said Westcoat's weapons charges are second-degree offenses and Landry's is a third-degree offense.

Geez.....Now they’ve extended it to any firearm?!! Last I looked you just needed a permit to purchase a handgun, breathe Oxygen, drive a car, etc.

Yes, just about everything there requires a permit. Including what clothes you can wear, which day of the week. Practically.
Hell, I wish I could a find a 30+ mag for my Marlin model 795 .22LR. Make reloading the thing a little easier.

They might mean an FID card . It is needed to transport a long gun if you are a resident of Zoo Jersey but I am unaware that it is needed to have a long gun in your abode.
There are no licences involved . You do need a permit to purchase a handgun but just the FID card to buy a long gun . Something is amiss in this whole matter .
You can STILL buy an AR15 in New Jersey if it is missing a flash supresser,bayonet lug, and foldin stock. Hand grips are a no no also . I actually moved to Pennsylvania and changed residency from the People’s Republic of New Jersey mainly because of the detrimental treatment of law abiding citizens when it comes to owning firearms.

Now that's an arguable prize! We're not forced to buy ARs with monster man grips or bullet buttons! In a nutshell, they can't be called AR-15s, or have a bayonet lug, folding stock or a flash hider. Magazine capacity is limited to 15 rounds. It's pretty much the same sort of nonsense as in any of the "big blue" states, except for the "unique" 15 round magazine limit.
(I think current "compliant" ARs look a helluva lot more evil than the original "scary" and banned Colt AR-15s! Is that just me?)

The bullet button and the MM grip are pretty simple to remove from what I hear (admitting nothing here).
