Rumsfeld: "Time Has Come" To Allow Gays To Serve Openly
ABC News ^ | 2/11/11 | Steven Portnoy

Posted on 02/12/2011 6:12:20 PM PST by FTJM

Former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who served at the Pentagon under two Republican presidents, says the “time has come” time for gays and lesbians to serve openly in the US military.

Two months after President Obama signed a law that will lead to the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Rumsfeld told ABC News Radio that the nation is ready for open service.

“First of all, we know that gays and lesbians have been serving in the military for decades with honorable service,” Rumsfeld said. “We know that [repeal of a ban on gays serving openly] is an idea whose time has come.”

Rumsfeld says he has “enormous respect” for the ground commanders and service chiefs who have expressed concerns about the impact of gays serving openly on unit cohesion, and he urged the top brass to implement the new law “with care.”

But Rumsfeld says that congress, which passed the repeal bill in the waning days of the last session, has expressed the will of the American people.

“We’ve seen it evolve in our country,” Rumsfeld said of the nation’s perception of gays and lesbians, reiterating that many have served in uniform with distinction.

Gin Rummy helping out buddy Dick Cheney, his daughter has been the excuse to have enough Republicans support this garbage.

I think their books and public pronouncements are to help the left-wing now. First Bush now Rumsfeld, they didn’t fight the propaganda the left was putting out years ago when it would have done some good.

Now they keep talking and rehashing stuff that isn’t going to change in anyone’s mind and diverts attention from the issues at hand.

“the military is no place for social engineering...”

Agreed. 100%.

Thanks for the naval service!

I was in the army. We, obviously, were not as dimensionally constrained. But from basic to schools to normal barracks living, we always had communal bedrooms, showers and shitters.

Which just wouldn’t be right for sexual opposites.

I don’t like doing personal maintenance and evacuation chores in front of my own potential love interests. Nor do I care to inflame the lust interests of physically close other men.

The sex/gender stuff is bad enough.

But, in my opinion, the general precedent of allowing the lowest elements of pop culture to affect military-related decisions and even the UCMJ itself is a major defeat for the defense of Freedom.

RE :”most of talk radio are cowards who cannot talk abut social issue, the likes of Hannity piss me off, all he ever does is talk debt, or health care but try and call in about conservative issues like abortion, homosexual agenda etc and they tell you not today

I cant listen to Hannity but it doesn't surprise me. DADT was lost by them. They let the ball drop and Obama filled the vacuum with those Gates ‘studies’.

“an idea whose time has come.” That claim is the weakest, lamest, flakiest justification for any bad notion that comes along. Every bad decision ever made was once “an idea whose time has come.”

Perhaps there are better ways to support military families that do not involve casting your lot with those socially re-engineering the military ... The Armed Forces Foundation

very very well said.

If the likes of broken record Hannity had spoken up over don’t ask and social issues then we would not have this crap going on now.

The left wanted us to shut up about the homosexual agenda.
The 2%, frigging 2% of the population wanted to impose what their lifestyle onto us and then tell us it is normal.

Then many on the right stayed quiet, then many on the right went into the shadows and said lets not talk about it as that 2% of the population might not like us and the media might call us a name.

Hannity and others run around telling us all he’s for the troops but when we needed a voice he stayed silent so he would not anger his cocktail Manhattan liberal pals like Bob Beckel.

True conservatives would have spoken up as would true republicans but Cheney comes out then Bush’s wife, Then McCain’s wife then Rumsfeld

This only makes me want to fight their agenda even more and no way can I stand here and see a fine good institution be turned into a place where we have men dressing as women, men holding hands on base and kissing each other good bye etc.

agreed there are more of us than ther 2% and their supporters who follow blindly.

Here’s the problem though, they;re like the Ron paul voters, they are few but run around making the most noise.

Now we have cowards on our side too, The cowards on talk radio those who have a TV show like Hannity who simple refuse to acknowledge that social conservatism needs to be talked about, to inform viewers and listeners.
If some had any idea what the homosexual agenda is then they too would wake up, even on here some have tried to defend the homosexual agenda, thankfully most were banned by JR.

“But Rumsfeld says that congress, which passed the repeal bill in the waning days of the last session, has expressed the will of the American people.”

It what convoluted way can someone come to the conclusion that a “lame duck” congress (a vast many having been voted out for there stands on such issues) represent the “will” of the American People? That is illogical.

IF the newly seated Congress was to repeal it, THEN he might be able to make such a claim.

I have genuine affection for President G.W. Bush, but he surrounded himself with some terrible advisers on National Defense....both Rumsfeld and Gates are terrible losers.

correct I am sick that those who have sex with animals or want 5 wives or marry their daughter cannot and it violates their civil rights.
We should all welcome peoples lifestyle and we should open our arms to them, I mean come on why not.

We should not let the Govt dictate peoples lives, leave the Govt out of it and so what if two men are dressed as women on base holding hands and kissing, welcome them

ARF
WHAT UTTER CRAP, there is a line in the sand right now and on one side is normal healthy families and marriage on the other side is anything goes and let them force it onto our children, the mentally sick are pushing their views and sick perverted lifestyle onto us.

On a kids program yesterday called degrassi they had two boys no older than 17 kissing on the bed.
WTH is wrong with these parents and people and as for Rumsfeld, Cheny Bush etc let them share showers, sleeping bags and room with homo’s and let them have these people come onto them and see how they like it .

“Bull dykes hitting on fresh-faced young recruits. And not Thing One the recruits can do about it. Nice.”

Actually, they can say, “No thank you, ma’am, not interested.” Exactly the same way a female recruit can say to a male officer who is hitting on her, “Sir! Not interested, sir!”

The recruit does not have to subsequently bunk with the male. Or share a latrine. Or a shower.

missing the point, women do not have to share with men plus homosexuals have more protection and complaints against these perverts get ignored then they will wonder why others will take matters in their own hands

now what username was you before you was banned before?

You live in Utopia? In the real world, butt-naked in the shower is the wrong place to have to make such a response. The military has one mission and one mission only: to be the most efficient, most effective, fighting force on the face of the Earth. Anything that breaks a soldier from that focus is unwelcome. Showering with someone you find attractive, or showering with someone that finds you attractive, is a focus breaker ... period.

I wonder what their username was before they signed up today to post that.

Agree on your post and to add, Imagine coming back from a battle, a patrol and now you see two men going at it or you go on watch and you see two men going at it.

The implications of this will destroy the fine institution but it’s not surprise they have gone after the military as they have gone after conservative conventions, websites, boy scouts, anything to do with morals.

I read this the other month and it was truly shocking to see what their rules were back in the 60’s.
It seems they are still fighting the cold war.
