Senators: Ban smokeless tobacco use in MLB
pMSNBC ^ | 2/15/11 | Ken Strickland

Two Democratic senators are asking baseball commissioner Bud Selig to ban all tobacco use in the sport, specifically citing smokeless products.

Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey are suggesting that Selig push for a ban as part of the negotiations in the players' collective bargaining agreement later this year.

Major League Baseball banned tobacco use in its minor leagues in 1993, but still allows it in the big leagues. The senators say Major League Baseball "is undoubtedly complicit" in the increase its use with school-aged boys.

They can get Huckabee as their spokeswoman. Though he’s fattened up a tad, so folks might mistake him for Rosanne.

I can actually remember Earl Campbell (rb houston oilers) doing Skoal commericals some time back. At the time, I wasn’t sure what he mean by ‘without lighting up.”

Bobby Murcer was another Skoal advertiser. If I recall, he even recorded a country song called “I’m a Skoal Dippin’ Man”

I hate chew. I detest it. I cannot stand it. It is dirty. It is disgusting. I have put my fingers in that brown spit and taken a mouthful of it by accident.

BUT DON’T THESE ASSHATS HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO DO?

It is CRAP like this that makes me wholeheartedly support THINGS I DETEST!

After the silly steroid trials held in congress which humiliated a few of the sports greats, I am sure the players will be a tad tough on this point.

Stupid Democrats...

Our nation is in one of the worst financial situations in our history, and all the Dems can do is keep sticking their noses in where they don't belong.

Get the government OUT of our personal business.

What Major League baseball players chew is none of the government's busness.

“Stupid Democrats...

Surreal might be a better word. Just one day of FR stories on the tanking economy (food and clothing prices soaring, or about to soar; Chinese imports heading up 25%; a dollar headed for the ash heap of history...) would fill a screen.

...and THIS is being debated by the US Senate. Huh?

Ideas for NBL ‘Nanny Baseball League’.

Put the umpires in tutus.

Have a 4 run rule limit to each inning.

Mandate women are provided equal playing time.

Use a softer ball (someone might get hurt).

Ban hot dogs (promotes obesity).

Beer has to go (bad influence on minors).

above all - don’t keep score (someone might lose and have their feelings hurt).

Ban this, ban that. Mandate this and the other.

F off, Senator. Leave us the hell alone for once.

No I don’t have a dog in this particular fight. I’m just tired of having Americans lives being micromanaged from Washington DC.

No spit cups (especially the styrofoam ones).

Chewing sunflower seeds leads to unacceptable littering - straight out with that.

Chewing bubble gum is a bad example to the kids - think about the damage to their teeth! Banned also.

Swearing and cussing will lead to banishment from the game.

Rubber spikes only - that racist Ty Cobb used the metal ones to hurt people, others have done so as well.

Wooden bats shatter and can cause injury (especially those damn maple ones); aluminum bats are lethal weapons - but we’ll let you use wiffle ball bats (despite the evil petroleum-based plastic they’re made of).

Batters have died after being hit by pitched balls - tee-ball is good enough for the kids, surely professionals should be able to hit a ball off a tee.

Get to it, Senator Durbin - doubleplusgood job so far, but there’s so much more to do.
