Gov. Rick Scott has turned down more than $2 billion in federal money for a high-speed rail project that would link Tampa and Orlando.
"The truth is that this project would be far too costly to taxpayers and I believe the risk far outweighs the benefits,'' Scott said this morning in a release announcing his decision to turn down the rail money.
Scott said he weighed three main points in deciding to turn down the money:

Good for him.
The liberal heads are exploding all over the internet with this announcement. He did the right thing. NO ONE will ride this thing except subsidized welfare recipients.
Just heard this on Fox News. WAY TO GO RICK SCOTT!!!
Was gonna say the same thing. We don’t need a stinkin’ 2 billion dollar train.
I love good news in the morning.
FINALLY, the adults are in charge again.
Charlie Crist would have been in front of every TV camera today - accepting the federal money (with a noose attached to it) - telling us all how wonderful Obama was...
THANK GOD HE IS GONE ! Gone to be an ambulance chasing attorney !
I’m loving Gov. Rick Scott ! (Florida’s Chris Christy w/o out the extra pounds, abrasiveness, and self-bloviation)
Good for him. A public official turning down a turn at the Federal teat is a keeper.
Proud to be a Floridian today. Scott is serious about fixing Florida’s woes. screw obama and his minions.
I bet Charlie would have screwed Florida and took the money and Florida would be on the hook.
Every governor should go through their entire budgets to see how many other projects exist where taking the federal bait is not worth getting a barbed hook through your lip.
Crist is baaaaack.
He was on CNBC this morning as part of a slate for a hostile takeover of a florida land company.
Crist is going to be on later today on CNBC in person.
seems like Crist is pushing to rehab his image into a good little corporate democrat.
That’s exactly what drove New Jersey governor Chris Christie to cancel the ARC rail tunnel project a few months ago.
great ! ... How about a tax refund with that $2 Billion ... oh wait its not the TAXPAYERS money.. likely it is Ben Bernakes created funny money... good Job Gov. Scott ! Now if every GOV would do this we might just get this spending thing under control a bit.. sadly this $2B is barley a drop of water in the OCEAN of DEBT !
Exactly. Temporary jobs for temp workers. Then they will be out of a job when they are done with the project. Then Florida will have to pay for their unemployment checks and the unions will kill us about jobs lost.
Nobody will ride it and it will be yet another money loser just like Amtrak. No thanks.
this is the train with the analysis that said it would be cheeper to hire a private car and driver FOR LIFE of the expected ridership.
As for the argument that Disney would use this, Disney has their own bus system they use and they keep their people on the Disney property.
So instead of the money being saved.. it's just being spent elsewhere.
Good. I’m very much in favor of improving our trains in Florida, but this was an absolute boondoggle. There was no need for the route and it was mystifying to me why they even thought of this.
I wonder what Congress critter was lining his pockets on this one? (It’s been in the works for years and years.)
Our new governor is infuriating ALL the right people!
I held my nose when I voted for him- but so far I’m really pleased!
Somewhere, a man named Willie is trying to keep his head form going “BOOM!”
Nice one by Rick Scott. Come one FL - get on illegal immigration and get a BC check for the primaries ASAP.
If this is built - you'll have to rent a car when you get to your destination anyway.
The time saved using this stupid idea train is not worth what it will cost us in the longrun!!
Our trains in Florida? Freight trains do just fine in FL. Passenger rail is a joke.
Unfortunately, the money will just be transferred over to another state to a governor who will gladly partake at the guv’ment teat.
Here is Portlandia, officials are excited about the possibility of getting $200 million for light rail, even though the cost is $1.5 billion...and we all know just how much extra cash we have laying around to throw into money-losing projects.
All the liberal comments at the link are equating Gov. Rick Scott with the tea-party and THAT'S a good thing.
Good for Gov. Scott! Now, we need to spread that scrutinizing mentality to CA where there is another ridiculous “high-speed rail” proposal.
OMG!!! Are you telling me that a Governor actually thought past cashing the check and took time to actually look at the long term effects? I am shocked!!!!
What Land Company?
But what about saving the environment, and helping the poor that don't have transportation? /SARC
More like temporary jobs for ILLEGAL ALIEN workers, as with this VA hospital in FL.
The commission behind this train estimated tickets would be $20 per person one way.
Most recent data shows CA only receiving 78 cents on the dollar for every dollar sent to Washington. I’m tired of paying outrageous taxes to support the welfare states. And yes I want it back. CA state taxes are beyond outrageous and uneccessarily so if we just got our due from the federal taxes. CA essentially pays for the welfare states. End of story.
I am proud of the new Governor and pray he stays the course, no matter what crap the lame stream throw at him.
Bravo, Governor Scott.
Perhaps the price would be $20 but the costs would be much more!!
If the tickets were $4 people might use it. At $20 its cheaper to drive.
Never mind the lack of transportation when you arrive in Orlando
Yee friggin’ haw!!!!!
After reviewing a cost analysis for the Wisconsin HSR, Florida expected the costs to be somewhere in the $80 to $100 range. Oh, and the little tiny $3 billion dollar price to be paid back to the Feds.
“WISN 12 News obtained a copy of the Wisconsin DOT federal grant application. The DOT estimated one-way tickets to Madison would range from $22 to $33. But, the conservative Cato Institute calculated the cost to taxpayers would be much higher with a $68 per ticket subsidy, bringing the real cost of a one-way high-speed ticket to nearly a $100.”
According to this article he is getting a lot of heat for this decision.
I just used the contact form below to express my support for this decision.
Good move! Now the federal government can use this money to to reduce the deficit...riiiight!
Whatever happened to Willie? I kinda miss his nonsense.
p.s. a quick search finds he was banned after preaching to Jim R.
Yep, he talked his way into a zot on that thread.
It was fun to watch, like a slow motion train wreck arguing with Jim. It wasn’t like he didn’t know it was coming either. I kind of miss him though, watching him trying to defend his choo-choo threads while being smacked down continuously was certainly entertaining.
Sanity prevails in Floriduh!
“BUT liberal states like California are just taking the funds to further fund their projects. So instead of the money being saved.. it’s just being spent elsewhere. “
NOT TRUE! The California rail plan is in deep trouble also!
