Class acts give lie to race card : The incredible phenomenon of Asian success in schools
New York Post ^ | 02/16/2011 | Michael Goodwin

Here we go again. In a winter ritual as familiar as snow, the results of specialized high-school admissions are sparking the usual hand-wringing and finger-pointing about a shortage of "minorities" and a lack of "diversity" at the best city schools.

With the announcement that black eighth-graders make up only 5 percent of students accepted to eight specialized schools next year and Hispanic students only 6 percent, fevered accusations run the range from prejudice to prejudice. New Yorkers once again are being lectured by the media and others that the results prove the deck is stacked in favor of the privileged, which is another way of saying "white."

But facts are stubborn things, and they put the lie to those race-baiting claims.

The professional pot-stirrers can reach their conclusions only by dismissing the incredible phenomenon of Asian success. Last time I looked, Asians are nonwhite minorities, too, yet they are the superstars of New York education.

Many are also immigrants who come from poor families who do not speak English. All of which means city educrats should be celebrating their achievements and trying to duplicate them among other students.

Why are people from the subcontinent who are Caucasian -I.e Indo-European, classified with East Asians who are of the Mongoloid race?

How do you know it was cultural and not genetic? All of these “culture only” people seem to believe what they want and ignore whatever possiblities they don’t like. There is pretty surely both a cultural AND a genetic component. There is NO evidence denying that likelihood.

The politically correct ban on the use of the term, “Oriental” was the work of Maria Hsia and the Clinton administration. It was an attempt to unite all Asians under one umbrella term (kind of like what Clapper was saying about the Muslim Brotherhood) and create one big lobby group as opposed to separate smaller groups.

Good point.....I have a South-east Asian background, not Oriental.

Coming back to the issue, Asian families are grateful to be here. They respect America, and they are willing to work hard to make a better life for their kids. And they VALUE Education. Family is tight, both parents generally present and kids know they are expected to grasp the educational opportunities.

Family,Country and Opportunity - That’s why I love the US and am conservative to the bone. Can’t wait to kick the Obama grifters out :-)

China is a strangely wonderful place. The contrasts and the unexpected reality can really be challenging - travelling there taught me a lot about myself.

No doubt whites are the superior race and the others are not really human. Satisfied. I’m tired of this nonsense and finished with such discussions. Kind of like I don’t argue with young earth creationists anymore.

Ah yes...I’ve been spouting about this for ages.... racist race baiters like Jackson and Sharpton have made a career about accusing the “man” for keeping minorities down, but that doesn’t hold water in that Asian Americans are disproportinately over represented in universities and scientific jobs, as well as having a higher per capita income than whites. So the “man’ purposely puts whites in 2nd place to a minority?

Oh, and Asians managed to overepresent themselves in colleges the good old fashioned capitalist way...HARD WORK, not affirmative action.

Countries like China, South Korea, and Japan have young people and students who are fiercely competitive, who strive for the limited spots at universities, and compaines and schools only take the best of the best. The US, meanwhile, strives for “diversity”, where the color of your skin determines the content of your character. We need more minorities at the best universities! never mind that they may be taking spots away from more qualified applicants. More diverisity!

Asian countries strive for excellence, where we strive for mediocrity, all in the name of diversity.

My dear poor America, down the spiral of meekness....

I think most educators know exactly why and how Asian students are successful. Their lives out of school revolve around family and studying. There are no PS3’s, Nintendo’s, sleep overs, cell phones, Facebooks, or even organized sports. Music, of course, that’s a given - but time away from studying and family - not going to happen.

In one way, this is backfiring on them. Asians are considered Over Represented Minorities for professional schools. My daughter is currently beginning her applications for medical schools and has shown me the data. A URM (Under Represented Minority) needs about a 27/28 MCAT and a 3.25 GPA to pretty much be in the solid running for admission. Whites - a 30 MCAT and a 3.50 GPA. But a ORM? They need a 33 - 35 with a 3.8+ GPA for a good serious look.

Fair or not - it’s just how it is.

Not to quibble, but Asian kids have more cell phones, Nintendos, and PS3s than any other group I know. Not to mention karioki machines. They do tend to shy away from organized sports after the age of 9 or so, but I doubt that’s a good thing.

Well, the scores are sufficiently close to get away with some sort of “unfairness”.

In Malaysia, the non-Bumiputras ( AKA Overseas Chinese and Indians who are not native Malays), have to score over 95% in the entrance exams to be even considered in one of their elite universities ( and even then, you’re not guaranteed to be accepted ). The Bumiputras ( native sons of Malaysia ) on the other hand need to score only above 75% to be accepted.

That’s a huge ( and obviously discriminatory ) gap right there.

The only reason the public schools in my area do as well as they do is because of the influx of Asian students. We used to have fistfights in the hallways of the local high schools because the white kids couldn’t keep up with them. That was years ago, and the Asian kids still outshine the other kids. No more fights in the hallways, though. The white kids got used to the fact that they probably weren’t going to do as well as the Asian kids.

I should have added that they angrily refuse to even discuss the issues on which they are irrational. BTW, I was hardly saying whites were superior; if Asian kids do better academically then wouldn’t they be the “superior” ones? Why is it ok to say they may have a cultural advantage, but not a genetic one? You have a very strange (but not unusual) mindset.
