Gov. Rick Scott to African-American legislators: “You guys”

Florida governor Rick Scott spent Monday at a luncheon with African-American lawmakers, speaking to the group about the upcoming legislative session.

In doing so, Mr. Scott seems have set off a debate over race and politics.

“I grew up probably in the same situation as you guys,” Mr. Scott said to the group of 20 Democrats. “I started school in public housing. My dad had a sixth-grade education.”

A number of state Democrats objected to the assumption. State Rep. Betty Reed said she was offended by the remark, adding “He assumed that everyone [[n the room] was poor and that can only be because you’re black.”

The governor’s comment is the latest incident to hit a state governor. Both Ohio governor John Kasich and Mississippi governor Haley Barbour are dealing with debates centered on race and politics.

Mr. Scott attended the event as part of an effort to discuss possible cuts aimed at African-American communities. The Florida Republican presented his budget last week, proposing steep cuts in social programs and education.

Didn’t someone tell Rick Scott that he can speak forthrightly to any other group but must walk on egg shells when dealing with AA legislators?

After all, the quickly offended crowd is always ready to pounce.

But at least we’re at the point where everyone else is so tired of the hustle that they just don’t care anymore about this kind of whining.

LOL!

So a luncheon group that describes itself as “African-American lawmakers” is upset because they were referred to as “you people.”

If it had been me I would have told THOSE people to KMA...after I picked myself up from LMAOROTF.

Thanks for clearing that up, I erroneously thought he meant that he thought all the people in the room were white, because none of them were in jail. Or something like that.

Jeez, these people...

I think the proper term is “youse guys”.

I thought the proper term was “black garbage pail kids”.

If I were Scott I would have retorted; “There’s not a whole lot I can do about individuals who harbor feelings of insecurity and resentment. They have to figure it all out on their own.”
