Chicago Population Sinks to 1920 Level to 2,695,598 a 6.9% decline from 2000 to 2010
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 16, 2011 | KEVIN HELLIKER

CHICAGO—A larger-than-expected exodus over the past 10 years reduced the population of Chicago to a level not seen in nearly a century.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday that during the decade ended in 2010, Chicago's population fell 6.9% to 2,695,598 people, fewer than the 2.7 million reported back in 1920.

Chicago's Exodus View Interactive ..After peaking at 3.62 million people in 1950, Chicago underwent a half century of decline that ended only when the 1990s boom years produced a small gain in the 2000 count. At that time, the city loudly celebrated its comeback.

But the recent recession accelerated a migration both to the metropolitan area's farthest suburbs and to the Southern U.S. Chicago nonetheless is expected to remain the nation's third-largest city, behind New York and Los Angeles and just ahead of Houston, for which final census numbers aren't in yet.

The exodus took a big chunk out of the city's black population in particular, shrinking it to 887,608 from 1,065,009, according to William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington.

Judging by the ‘10 election returns, it appears Liberals are staying put in these hell holes and the Conservatives are moving to where freedom is easier to find. A lib probably does not see a problem living in Chi town.

Exactly. From N to S, E to W, city to suburb, large to small. I’ve felt for a long time, just follow the population, that will tell you more about liberalism than anything. Actions speak much louder than words as liberals head for cover away from their own policy areas, neighborhoods, schools, shopping, and their own constituencies. Like the spoiled brats running for Mommy and Daddy, sure enough here they come.

The exodus took a big chunk out of the city's black population in particular, shrinking it to 887,608 from 1,065,009, ...

That's almost a 17% decrease in the black population, much greater than the 7% decrease in overall population. So if the whites are fleeing, the blacks are way out in front of them! I can't pretend to understand these statistics, but it is certainly not "white flight" as it was understood in the 1960's.

No big surprise. Does anyone wonder why?
When my past job required traveling around the country, Chicago was my favorite city to visit.
Great bars, restaurants, food, music, etc. From Jazz & blues to German, and everything else, my “off time” was great.

But… I would not live there for free, due to the corrupt politics!

That all sounds really fascinating but people move from areas they can’t afford to live in to those they can. Big cities are critical to economic life and have always been definers of civilization so it is critical that they remain viable. Chicago is a fine place to live if you understand that certain areas are dangerous. My neighborhood on the other hand is probably safer than yours.

Very few of these movement decisions were made for political reasons.

LoL and you think Chicago’s politics were not at least as corrupt as when you were here in the past? All those things you like are still here with all you liked as before. Lou Malnati’s still tastes great, Greek town will fill you up, and the Chicago Symphony is still the world’s best band. And the Magnificent Mile is still Magnificent.

Compared to the 19th century Chicago is a hotbed of virtue in the corruption department. We haven’t even had an alderman sent to the hoosegow in several years.

I’ll call you on that. How many people stay in cities for the urban public educations their kids can get? Yeah, they move out for $$$, but the urban schools rotted from liberal policies. Liberalism is expensive, they don’t get value for their dollar. I can’t stand paying school taxes to districts I know is being pissed away by libs, and virtually every major city is run by them. I know tons of white liberals who run to one of the most conservative districts in Texas. They come here for schools . . . and safety. My post was about the general rule, there of course are exceptions out of millions in the populations. But don’t kid yourself that population trends aren’t politically motivated. It’s been going on for too long in too many places for it to be mere coincidence.

Those of us who have lived in Chicago for many years know where the good schools are and many send their kids to private schools. The Catholic system is huge. Most of the suburban schools are no less liberal than the city and many are far worse in that regard.

But when these folks leave and find out that their property taxes are much higher than in the city they get a very unpleasant surprise. But the teachers are paid much more in those systems than in the city so it is going to come out of the taxpayer.

While what you say about Texas may be true but I have seen this going on too long to believe that there is much of political motivation in it. It is primarily economic and actually is based primarily on the lower price of land in the outer rings around cities. Other things get factored into the decision and a political one could tip the scales but I never met many libs who wanted to move to a conservative area if they had ANY viable option.

I had heard that there has been a big migration of blacks from north to south of late. The report I heard said the reason was that they were seeking job opportunities.

They refer to a decrease in the black population, but don’t attribute it to one of real leading causes: abortion. All US cities are evolving into Latino reservations with a “black section”.

I had also read a piece about a year ago in which it was predicted that of the top ten largest cities in 2010, only one would have a real “winter” (it was either NYC or DC). All of the rest of the northern cities were going to de-populate as a result of heating fuel costs combined with general hostility to business and high costs of living. I take things like that with a grain of salt, but electorally it is slowly shaking out that way...

LOL, just heard that last night on the radio. The woman was demanding more community organizing and her major suggestion was getting local gangs to act as police for their own neighborhoods.

They couldn’t buy their kids an ice cream cone and so they were selling drugs, but give them a job and a badge and they’d go legit.

That’s the insanity emanating out of Chicago.

Really, according to whom? Better than Berlin Philharmonic? Better than Vienna Philharmonic? Better than the super-awesome Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra? Check out this list - Chicago, while the best in the US, is only #5 overall:

It’s a highly risky personal undertaking, but if the Tea Party in Illinois were to focus on voter fraud investigations for the next two years, a lot of things would change. cook County is a major source of democratic votes in Illinois and the nation. the voter maps showing red and black counties is amazing in the spikes in Cook County, NYC and areas out west I can’t recall. It’s all voter fraud.

I think it is a combination of:

1. The loss of public housing bastions like Cabrini Green
2. Gang warfare and crack coccaine are devasting black neighborhoods
3. Some blacks are getting sick and tired of being crapped on by those who claim to be looking out for them.

It is an interesting trend.

You wouldn’t need to do much.

1. Sample the worst precincts.

2. Generate the story in drip fashion. i.e. one story in the reader or on Don Wade & Roma. Let Orr et al respond with the usual denials and then just keep “finding” more problems.

3. Have a ready solution. The vote is so important that we don’t want it stolen. Make everyone re-register between now and the next election. Demand they use state ids and demand independent oversight of the process.

Embarrassment works, especially with “Mr. Clean” David Orr.

I was born and raised in Chicago. I entered the Army in 1964 and returned in 1967. In 1974, I moved to Bolingbrook IL about 30 miles sw of Chicago where I remained until 1992 when I moved to Florida.

I was a highly skilled computer programmer in Chicago but couldn't find much work here in the Orlando area. I wound up commuting to Tampa 97.9 miles each way and even had to work in Jersey City NJ for three months just to pay my bills and put food on the table for my family.

The ONLY advantage Chicago has over Florida is employment and the fine arts as in Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the great Joliet American Legion Band. In fact, the ONLY thing I miss from Chicago is the Joliet band which I was a member of for 8 great years. I still follow the Cubs, Blackhawks and Bears down here whenever I can.

I retired back in 2000 after a car accident and haven't worked since. I can't say things are easy here but the weather helps a lot despite the hot summers.

In Chicago, it cost a lot to heat our house. Down here, it costs a lot to cool it. But at least the I don't expect to freeze to death. No more 25 below zero days for me. We only see a few days in the upper 30’s each year and I spend most of the year in t-shirts. That includes most of the winter.

Much of what I knew of in Chicago has ceased to exist with at least three of my former residences being demolished and replaced. My high school, Harrison Tech, which was a great school has been shut down and converted to a middle school.

The neighborhood I grew up in has changed to latin/Mexican and my old neighborhood of South lawndale is now known as ‘little village’. At least it was when I lived there.

I remember the race riots back in the early 60’s as well which revolved around the high school.

The whites have alrerady left with the blacks taking over many areas. The latinos are whats moving into the void and inbetween the black and white areas.

I sued to live in the South lawndale neighborhood which was ethnic european such as Czech, Polish, Lithuanian, etc. The blacks started moving into that area but were stopped by the latinos moving in before them. My old neighborhood is now mostly latino while the whites who used to live there long gone to the suburbs.

I’ve never ordered them myself, but I’ve seen them, held them and used them, so it can be done. I’d speak to a friendly GOPer and see or just call Orr’s office and tell them you want to order the voter rolls for several precincts.

They should walk you through the process.
