DEVELOPING: Police say they have arrested a 62-year-old Alabama man for allegedly poisoning trees at a historic site on Auburn University's campus, where fans have long celebrated big wins and hundreds gathered after the Tigers won the football national championship on Jan. 10.

The Auburn Police Division said Thursday that Harvey A. Updyke, of Dadeville, Ala., was arrested and charged with first degree criminal mischief. Police allege Updyke deliberately poisoned oak trees at Toomer's Corner with a commonly used herbicide, applied in "lethal amounts" to the soil around the two trees.

The 130-year-old trees likely cannot be saved, officials said.

So his menstruating Elephants - the Crimson menstrual tide - loses a game, and this lunatic gets male PMS and poisons trees?

How about caring about something that actually matters?

I guess in Alabama they have nothing better to do but football and be sore losers. I wonder if this low brow reject even WENT to Alabama, is THIS what passes for a college graduate in Alabama?

Worse he called it in to a radio station to BRAG about it. I want to know the reaction of the radio show and it's callers. Supportive?

Yep, the guy needs to start contributing more $$$ to the UA Athletic Dept so they can rent better players.

Maybe Alabama can get some pointers from Auburn? Auburn seems to be getting their money's worth out of their players.......

Alabama fan. Us Oregon fans are tree huggers so not likely to kill trees. This old guy, though younger than me, needs to go to jail for a while.

It’s bad enough when high schoolers and college students act out against their rivals. Isn’t it sad that people are so wrapped up with sports that they act this childish. A proper sentence would include making him do caretaking at Auburn, and if he refused or did something else stupid, send him to jail AGAIN.

I'll bet the idiot didn't even graduate high school. He most likely has never been on a college campus. The trees were not on campus.
No matter what school you pull for this is so over the top it can not be explained.
No, Bear Bryant or any coach worth his salt would not support something like this.

It’s not all that sporting to make a felonious assault on a tree. It’s not like it was going to run away or anything

This whack job is NOT representative of Tide fans. He’s just a random nutbar that turns up as a statistical anomaly in any
population.

Relatively SMALL trees at Home Depot cost quite a bit.

Can't imagine the worth of large old growth trees of historical significance.

Make him pay, or put him in prison for life to work in prison and pay every penny he can.

Don't have a clue about folks in Alabama, do ya? You might want to come visit before insulting the entire state based on the actions of one sick puppy.

Seems like y'all had a guy named Manson once upon a time...maybe all you left coasters are mass murderers...whatcha think?

He looks like the guy that was throwing rocks and denting and breaking the windows of vehicles driving by here in Marietta, GA. They caught him and said he was a family man and grandfather.

The obvious nutcase hit many peoples vehicles, including my friend's Lexus. Good thing no one was killed.

At the very least, it would be nice to see him have to pay for the attempts to save the trees, the soil clean-up, and the replacement of the trees (if they don’t make it).

What an utter idiot. What did those trees ever do to him?

I lived in “Lower Alabama” for two years.

I was wondering if this guy even graduated from or WENT to Alabama - because I was incredulous that THIS would be what passes for a college graduate.

I also wanted to know the attitude of the Crimson Menstrual Tide supporters when this mental midget called in to brag. Were they laudatory to his ‘heroic’ exploits, or did they tell him what a low brow idiot poor excuse for a man he was, and how he wasn't a good representative of Alabama.

Because to me, if they lauded him AT ALL, they OWN him and his actions.

So what was the response from the radio show and their callers after his braggadocio?

“This whack job is NOT representative of Tide fans”

Unfortunately this whack job is representative of many SEC fans - the ones who shun family and job responsibilities lending mindless adoration and tailgate time supporting illiterate college football atheletes. The South’s obsession with college ball is borderline lunacy - I live here and see it every season. “Mixed” families (Auburn wife and AL husband for example) damn near kill each other. Drunks, road rage, and vandalism abound.

The trees at Toomer’s Corner never hurt anyone. This butt-wipe should drink his own poison and have his precious season tickets shoved down his putrid gullet till he expires. I predict increased violence when AL visits this fall.

“So his menstruating Elephants - the Crimson menstrual tide - loses a game, and this lunatic gets male PMS and poisons trees?”

This a**hole will hopefully get his due in court...however, I didn’t hear from your self righteous trap when the Auburn fans rolled those same trees after the anouncement of Bear Bryant’s death...a real class act that...

And one more thing regarding Alabama in general...we don’t RIOT and burn cities when one of our teams wins a championship....you know, like they do in those “civilized” states.....

The Alabama and Auburn institutions have acted with class regarding this matter...but we can always count on some know-it-all dipstick from outside the south to vomit up the usual stereotypical drivel....

You want to know the reaction of the radio station, suggesting or suspecting that they might have cheered this moron....which says MORE about YOU that the idiot who did it.

What does God think of His trees?

Deuteronomy 20:19
When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them

Well did they or didn't they?

Did he receive any criticism from the show or its callers? If so I would like to hear what they said. He apparently called in expected his exploits to be celebrated, were his expectations realized or not?

They didn't cut him off, or shut him down, he signed off with a “Roll Damn Tide”, did they reply with a heartfelt “Roll Tide”?

So what WERE the comments from the Crimson Menstruation Radio show?

Dang, a herbicide terrorist. Probably inspired by Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh who said something about “weeding out” liberals.

I'd say clearly not. AMD, I'd recommend three hours in the corner listening repeatedly to "Sweet Home, Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Then maybe take a ride on one of Alabama's beautiful highways.

Admittedly all I saw was due to a road trip, but I thought it unexpectedly beautiful and the people very nice.
