DES MOINES, Iowa – An Iowa high school wrestler who was one of the favorites to win his weight class defaulted on his first-round state tournament match rather than face one of the first girls to ever qualify for the event.

[...]

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times," wrote Northrup. "As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa."

I think his stand actually has more impact on just how PC sports have gotten lately. I applaud this young man.

It’s a no win situation. You beat her and you get grief. You loose and you get even more grief.

Not really...

HE is a tower of moral strength and intellect - unlike the levelling idiots in Congress and the White House.

try that with a girl and get arrested for sex assault...

... that would be a hoot of a lawsuit, wouldn’t it?

Lose-lose for him: He wins and all he did was beat a girl. He loses and he was beaten by a girl.

Besides, wrestling holds/hand-placement includes touching/grabbing sometimes very near private places. . .sometimes actually private places (inadvertently). Add that and now you have the guy possibly being prosecuted/fouled for “inappropriate” touching.

You might not win...

Cedar Falls' Cassy Herkelman, left, controls Marion's Scott Morehouse on the way to victory in a Class 3A 112lb. wrestle-back match at the district tournament, Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, in Waverly, Iowa. The win makes her the first female wrestler to qualify for the state wrestling tournament.

There is no way a young man should wrestle, box or play contact sports with a young lady. The aspect of acting like a gentleman should be reason enough, but it is a classic no win situation.. If you win, well you beat a girl, if you lose... you remind everyone of Cartman.

My step-daughter wrestled on the JV team her senior year in HS. Her main sport was track (hurdles), but she was quite fit and just wanted to compete to stay in top shape. The boys were always nervous to wrestle her because they knew if they didn’t do well, they would get hazed severely by their team-mates. She never won a match, but was only pinned one time.

She went on to compete at the NCAA division I level in track on a four year scholastic and sports scholarship and now works as model in sporting goods/exercise advertising, et al.

I don’t see what the big deal is, personally.

Regardless of whether you agree with the boy's decision, I think we should respect his rationale.

Heh.

I used to play soccer, and they made us play against the girls squad a year older than us. Same in PE class, where we had guys and girls.

The girls would always get mad at any one of the guys who made contact with them during the game. It made the sports pointless.

I think this guy is great! He should be commended for being a gentleman and not participating.

Wrestling is just a sport. Nobody dies or is permanently disabled. On a parallel track, Congress is working to repeal the ban on women in combat. If this happens the frontline women trigger pullers aren’t going to get a ‘bye” from the enemy. They are going to fight and some are going to die...violently. Why have the feminists brought this country to a sad and confused state? Do they get some sick satisfaction out of trying to make women equal in every role they seek?

Another person not afraid to acknowledge that there are differences between men and women.

The usual argument is that girls can't compete at the same level as boys. Not so here: the girl got to state on merit, by defeating boys on the mat.

So that argument is shot.

Which leaves us with the Islamic argument, that merely touching a girl in a wrestling match leaves him somehow unclean.

I suppose it's nice of him to pick a principle and stand up for it. But it's not a particularly useful one.

Most homeschool families I’ve talked to also have the policy that the boys are not to compete with the girls,
nor the girls with the boys, especially physically.

This is not what He created them to do.
