HighSchool Wrestler Forfeits Match Against a Girl, In Iowa State Tournament on Principle
ChicoER Gate ^ | 2/17/11 | Chuck Wolk

Posted on 02/17/2011 3:22:50 PM PST by OneVike

When it became apparent that his opponent in the state tournament wrestling match would be a girl., e would be facing off against a girl, Joel Northrup, forfeited his match to her.  As a Christian, Joel is serious about his faith, and so he could not in good conscience wrestle with a  girl due to the manner in which a wrestler must grapple with their opponent. If only we had more boys raised to respect the fairer sex as much as Joel has been.   His parents are homeschooling him. but he has been allowed to wrestle with the Lin-Mar of Marion Iowa.  So Cassy Herkelman of Cedar Falls was able to win her first match at the Iowa State High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2011.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan (Black, the tournament's other female entrant) and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times. As a matter of conscience and my faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most of the high school sports in Iowa."

Linn-Mar Athletic Director Scott Mahmens did speak with the media, (Video above ) and said Northrup's parents are not at the tournament. Mahmens added that nobody from the school tried to influence Northrup, who is home schooled, to wrestle or not wrestle.

"He's a Linn-Mar Lion, and we're going to support what he's doing," Mahmens said. "Obviously his beliefs are more important to him (than a chance at a state title)."

His coach Doug Streicher did not speak with the media after the match.

After reading this, all I could think was “Holy Crap!” Is this for real?

I live in the people’s republic of NY, and even here we don’t have high school boys and girls wresting each other (at least outside of their parents’ basements). What kind of asinine state education bureaucrat would require boys to wrestle girls???

Article w/video Ping!

It is seldom we see boys who have respect for girls today. After all, we are told that we need to treat girls like boys. Well, Joel decided to treat the girl like a girl and refused to wrestle her. Check out this article of a stand up young man who forfeited his wrestling match in the state tournament. ..............

Here is my post form an earlier thread:

When I was in Taw Kwon Do I wouldn’t hit or kick a girl as hard as I would a man. In fact, they got more licks in on me than they would have if they were a guy.

I can’t say it was fair for them as I wasn’t going to be as aggressive physically as I would a man and they weren’t learning as much from me except that I was going to block them.

I took a kick to the head once, got knocked to the ground and I got up and let the girl have it and good. But I felt terrible about it afterward and just went back to pulling punches and kicks and blocking.

I don’t want to compete with a woman in a contact sport.

It isn’t ever going to fair.

Good for the kid but, sad he will forfeit his chance at a state trophy

Here was my response to another poster who thought I had done girls a disservice in sparring:

thought I made it clear I had done her wrong. She wasn’t going to learn to block and evade if she didn’t hit hard enough times to get sick of it and learn how to protect and attack.

I don’t care to fight and I don’t want to do contact sports with a girl. It will never be fair.

I am genetically predisposed with muscles and a skeletal frame she won’t have, ever. Moreover, I ain’t just plain good, I am very competitive.

Wanna play board games, run a race or whatever, fine. I’ll go all out.

I just don’t want hitting a girl the same as I would a man on my conscience, even if we are wearing all that protective gear.

You can’t exactly leg sweep a girl. You could seriously injure their legs and cause a deformity. I like their legs too much to do that.

I don’t to break a rib or an arm or anything on them.

I just want to admire their form over drinks and some conversation.

As far control, sure and stopping at the skin but it ain’t the same against guys. We go all out and sometimes stuff happens. Just part of being a guy and playing guy games.

And yeah, I couldn’t kick her or any other girl in the chest. Couldn’t conceive of drilling em in the chest with a strong right. You have less targets on them as well.

Believe me Kong scolded me on more than one occassion for not sticking it them and said I was going to get “whooped” by a bunch of girls in a bar. (So damn funny hearing him say “whooped” and every time he said it I would laugh or smile. He once demanded “You think that’s funny”. I started laughing and said “Yep. That’s why I keep coming back. Cuz you’re a great teacher”. He just looked at me and said “Oh? And you know how to kiss my ? and he slapped his ass)

The whole class was laughing and he tried to get serious and then he bowled over hands on knees trying to control himself but was laughing to hard.

Took us about two minutes to get back to class after a couple of fits and starts of laughing.

As for the rest of your post I completely agree:

“Any woman, deserves to truly know what her abilities are; because her life may depend upon that skill at some point in time.

After all, isn’t the point of this discipline to compete against what the best you think you can be? It’s not to defeat your opponent, but to measure yourself against what you once were, and where you want to go. Every day, the goal is to go to bed smarter than you were when you woke up.”

I am just probably not the guy to teach that. But I won’t get “Whooped” by a bunch of girls in a bar, unless they’re all HOT and it feels good.

Aside from questions of decorum, respect, and chivalry, competing with girls in hard contact sports are lose-lose. If you win, it’s “So what, you beat a girl,” and if you lose, Lord help you.

Took fencing in college. No problem targeting the chest in that class. Actually get MORE of a target when a girl is turned sideways...

Let me predict what eventually will happen. One day one of these girl wrestlers will be matched with a boy who is neither chivalrous nor particularly religious, and probably with a bad temper. That girl will be badly injured. The adults involved in making these decisions are totally irresponsible, and are trying to deny human nature.

Her father, Bill Herkelman, told The Associated Press via text message that he understands and respects Northrup’s decision.

“It’s nice to get the first win and have her be on the way to the medal round,” Bill Herkelman wrote. “I sincerely respect the decision of the Northrup family especially since it was made on the biggest stage in wrestling. I have heard nothing but good things about the Northrup family and hope Joel does very well the remainder of the tourney.”

I teach high school and there is a myth being inculcated into our children. They honestly seem to believe that men and women are equal in all things.

My heart aches to know that, at some point in their lives, both are going to realize this was a horrible lie and someone (any guesses who) is going to get hurt because feminists controlled the curriculum.

This will come to no good end.

As a former wrestler from a champion high school program, I’ve never understood the female wrestling thing. I respect this young man’s decision. (I probably would’ve never faced a female wrestler because I wrestled at a higher weight class.) It’s a shame he took a loss this way at the state tournament and can only hope to battle back to a 3rd place finish. It seemed like half the guys doing the weigh-ins were in their underwear or naked in order to make weight. How do you handle that with a female? They don’t let guys play softball or girl’s basketball...girls shouldn’t be wrestling guys.

Its probably a bit different if your focus is more on self defence. I do (well, its a bit sporadic these days) Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu, and the emphais is on self defence and not on sport. That being the case, if you are training with a girl you aren’t doing her any favours by not attacking her properly so that she can learn to defend herself properly (she may found herself in a situation were she will indeed have to fight off a big hairy bloke after all).
It is also good for a man to get used to the idea of potentially having to hit a woman in self defence. Although it is true they are generally weaker, they aren’t all delicate little creatures, and they can pose a tangible threat even to a guy. When I lived in Preston as a student, a man in his 40s was set upon by a gang of youths and beaten to death a few hundred yards from were I lived. A friend I know who works for the police told me that the blow that killed him came as the result of a stilleto that went through his eye and into his brain as he lay on the ground...

Something like that happened in New Jersey back in the 1980s, when a female student won a landmark court case for the right to play on a high school football team. She was seriously injured during her first or second season and ended up filing another lawsuit against the school and coach — for making her play a “dangerous” position on the team, or some nonsense like that.

That’s what I told a young guy at work once, he was joking around as if he was challenging me to fight. I said, “you realize of course that you can’t possibly win a fight with an old man, don’t you?” He asked why I thought that and I told him, “If you kick my butt people will condemn you for picking on an old man and if I kick your butt you will never live it down.”

There was an article I read some years ago in a general sports or baseball publication about references to baseball in the Bible. They were all like the one you just posted there, OneVike.

The most memorable one was the first line in the Book of Genesis: "In the big inning, God created heaven and earth."

LOL.

I think another one was from the Book of Numbers: "Every man of Israel shall pitch by his father's house," or something like that. Another one from the Old Testament was about some kind of infestation of insects: "And He sent many flies among them, and they caught every one."

Be assured, I will be stealing your joke and claiming it as my own.

Feel free, I stole it from K-LOVE radio.

You have heard that God is big baseball fan right?

Yea, right in Genesis and Exodux it speaks of baseball.

Genesis 1:1 it "In the big inning".

Then in (Lev 27:16) 'If a man dedicates to the LORD part of a field of his possession, then your valuation shall be according to the seed for it. A homer of barley seed shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver.

(Isa 5:10) For ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, And a homer of seed shall yield one ephah."

(Eze 45:11) The ephah and the bath shall be of the same measure, so that the bath contains one-tenth of a homer, and the ephah one-tenth of a homer; their measure shall be according to the homer.

(Eze 45:13) "This is the offering which you shall offer: you shall give one-sixth of an ephah from a homer of wheat, and one-sixth of an ephah from a homer of barley.

(Eze 45:14) The ordinance concerning oil, the bath of oil, is one-tenth of a bath from a kor. A kor is a homer or ten baths, for ten baths are a homer.

So you can see that of all the sports, baseball is anointed by God.

I think the whole problem is only aggravated by TV shows in which some gorgeous 105 pound super model type is shown whipping up on 3 or more 210 pound body builder/martial artist type men without messing up her hair. Some people seem to actually believe all that garbage.
