Deval Patrick signs 'bathroom bill', sets off 'firestorm'
The Boston Herald ^ | February 18, 2011 | Hillary Chabot

In a move blasted by opponents as an “end run” around lawmakers, Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday quietly signed a controversial transgender rights executive order, called the bathroom bill by critics, making it illegal to discriminate against state workers on the basis of “gender identity.”

“This is going to set off a firestorm, and it’s certainly something the governor should have given us a heads up on,” said House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones (R-North Reading).

Patrick signed the changes with no announcement. The measure was a major issue during Patrick’s tough re-election battle last year.

The executive order, unlike a similar bill that died in the Legislature over the past three years, needs no legislative approval and only applies to jobs, programs and services within state government.

A warning to any person in Massachusetts who dares to use a restroom in a state office. And the state workers in Wisconsin think they have problems.

The article goes on to say how this could eventually impact public schools. The mind reels at the the lawsuits that may be forthcoming as some very disturbed folks demand acceptance of their disturbance using this order as their argument.

This was an executive order, and Deval Patrick is rumored to play a major role in Oblabla's 2012 campaign. Imagine the executive orders he'd issue as a lame duck?

In a sane world, politicians try to please as many people as possible, and avoid stupid, controversial, unecessarily provocative actions. Politicians ought to care about their country, their state, their town. They ought to think about the future and how it will affect the people they know, and their own political future.

Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Patrick, and a host of others are not governing in a sane manner. At all.

I frankly find it shocking. It's like a gotterdammerung. Let's do everything we can to destroy society.

I've thought the same thing. Liberals consider it a badge of honor when they stick a knife into what is considered normal or traditional. Since Obama was elected they have kicked that into hyperdrive.

This clearly shows sick and disordered minds. There are only 2 sexes, male and female. DNA recognizes no more than 2 no matter what a persons sickness tells them.

It would seem that this "Governor" has learned from Obama and will force his will on others by "Orders" instead of governing. He should remember that he governs only by the will of the people.

Deval is just an old queen struggling to break out of the male matrix nature unfairly imposed on him.

Interestingly enough the people of Massachusetts prefer that kind.

And by a plurality of the people, at that. He was reelected in a three-way race with 48-49% of the vote!

“This Executive Order ensures that all employees in the executive branch will continue to be able to perform their duties free of discrimination,” Patrick spokesman Alex Goldstein said in a statement.

Step one, shemale uses the "ladies" restroom. Step two, female state employee takes maximum exception and files a sexual harassment / hostile work environment suit. Step three, all female employees join in. Step four, ladies get a jackpot.

BTW, what exactly do you call the restroom now? What kind of signage must be used so as to not offend the various categories of potty preference? I think "sitters" and "standees" would work.

And as to all those laws that set requirements for the room formerly known as the ladies room, must they be applied equally? For example, I guess the room formerly known as the mens room must now have a couch. I guess the safest thing is to equip them identically.

What about someone who regards "him"self as female, still has the male equipment and prefers to stand - can s/he demand a urinal be installed in the room formerly known as the ladies room if that is his/her preferred place and method of waste elimination?

And what the Sam Hill is the definition of "reasonable accommodation" for something so patently unreasonable???

As a taxpayer and member of the private sector, I'm guessing the definition involves the words "very expensive".

I know some liberal women who work at state offices, and a few of them have gossiped about a cross-dressing frequent customer. I plan on informing them about the new heights of "celebrating diversity" they may soon reach the next time they head to the restroom.

In Provincetown, MA, where I have been going every year since 1977, the public bathrooms are often labeled "either" and "or."

That will probably be Deval's idea of "compromise" if he meets with enough outrage on this. I'm sure the business owners who will have to shell out $$$ to make those "improvements" will be thrilled. To take their businesses to New Hampshire, that is.

Nope- I looked into the subject extensively. There is no such creature. One is predominantly one sex or the other, as meshed as appearances can be.

When I was researching a decade ago they thought they’d found a youth in England who was equal and distinct parts....then further development went one direction. This always happens.

Think of it this way: no creature can inseminate and reproduce itself. Case closed.

My point was that here are people who are born outside the norm or they for some reason turn out that way and don't fit in well in either category (too feminine to be a boy or too masculine to be a girl).

They have had shows on these young transgender persons who are in their teens on tv. Dr Oz is the show I most remember and of course Oprah and I have to admit I could see where these young people definitely did not fit in with the other boys or girls, and probably never could. These are people who need compassion and understanding from us, and the protection afforded by the law.

I think that is what these “transgender bathroom rights bills” are addressing.

The problem that arises from this type of law is how to define someone with the legitimate need to use the women's room (because they would be beaten up and thrown out of the men's room anyway I suppose) vs someone looking to gain access to womens only spaces in order to leer and sexually harass and physically intimidate the women in their own spaces.

I think that a reasonable response by women who might feel threatened would be to simply carry pepper spray and a cell phone (which every woman should have with them at all times anyway) and upon someones presence in the womens bathroom to visibly draw and arm the pepper spray and get the cell phone out and be ready to dial 911.

Any disrespectful behavior at all should result in a 911 call to the police reporting that the person is making you feel uncomfortable or if you feel that the person is being harassing (taking about breasts or other inappropriate subjects) call 911 and report that you are being sexually harassed by a man dressed as a woman in the womens bathroom.

The politicians may be busy pandering to the special interest groups but we do not have to act like helpless sheep.

No. It is a "special rights" push by the GLBT lobby. 1% or less of the population is born with ambiguous genitalia. These people also have sex reassignment surgery. That removes the ambiguity.

From the article:

Arline Isaacson, co-chairwoman of the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, said she’ll still work to get the legislation passed in order to ensure equal rights in the private sector.

“We are deeply grateful yet again to Gov. Patrick for his solid and consistent support,” Isaacson said.

Having sex reassignment surgery would certainly remove the gender ambiguity. As I recall the young transgender teens were all on track for that as soon as they could get it to correct their problems so they could live in the gender that they wanted to be in. If the bill stipulated only people who have had their sex reassignment surgery or were going to get their surgery were allowed to use the restroom for the gender they were going to be, then in my mind it would be ok.

Still if this guy http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2667358/posts came in the womens room when I was in there I would immediately go to mental condition Orange (specific alert something is not quite right and has gotten your attention) and grab the Pepper spray and cell phone. And if he or she gets offended, too bad.

And if this person comes in wearing their womens Navy uniform that they have no right to be wearing (he did not serve in the Navy as a female sailor, he was in the Navy as a male sailor) I might accidently let loose with a short burst (oops, so sorry, jumpy nerves, etc.).

I don't think the law is that specific about who can use what restroom though, so in that case you would be probably right about it being a bill for the GLBT lobby.

I guess the flaming gay men would probably feel safer in the womens restrooms too. Let the dykes use the mens room although I don't think they would do that. And the transgenders I guess will be able to use whatever restrooms for the gender they feel that they are that day.

But as crazy as this situation sounds, they had better behave them selves or they will be punished with the full force of the law against lewed or harassing or threatening behaviors.

I should mention a course that I have taken, and I believe that all women should take is Refuse To Be A Victim. http://www.nrahq.org/rtbav/.

Also I would recommend taking any and all womens self defense and martial arts programs offered at the college you are attending or is offered as training for civilians.

Everyone deserves respect. Even those who are different for whatever reason. But we in turn deserve respect too, and if someone is being disrectful or threatening towards us we do not have to take it. We do not have to be sheep. If threatened a call to 911 would be very effective - a womans word against a man if she is serious and determined and can articulate her case well to the police is taken very seriously and will be acted upon. So women have protections too. We never have to be victims.

One goes in the stall to do one’s duty if one is in that category.

The cases of such mixed-genitalia being so prominent into adolescence are very, very rare. If memory serves, 1 in 20,000 have the condition at birth and by age two the visual problems disappear in nearly all cases.

Everyone ought to be home-schooling anyways.

Quite serious, but I should add these are restaurant bathrooms that only accommodate one person at a time. There are usually two of them, and not uncommon to see the doors labeled "either" and "or."

That’s interesting.I wonder if there are any places here in Florida that have “either” or “or” on the doors. If I have to go to the bathroom really bad and the women’s room is being held up I’ll go into the single bathroom for men;it’s the same as the women’s.(But that’s only if I really have to go).
