Deval Patrick signs 'bathroom bill', sets off 'firestorm'

In a move blasted by opponents as an “end run” around lawmakers, Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday quietly signed a controversial transgender rights executive order, called the bathroom bill by critics, making it illegal to discriminate against state workers on the basis of “gender identity.”

“This is going to set off a firestorm, and it’s certainly something the governor should have given us a heads up on,” said House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones (R-North Reading).

Patrick signed the changes with no announcement. The measure was a major issue during Patrick’s tough re-election battle last year.

The executive order, unlike a similar bill that died in the Legislature over the past three years, needs no legislative approval and only applies to jobs, programs and services within state government.

A warning to any person in Massachusetts who dares to use a restroom in a state office. And the state workers in Wisconsin think they have problems.

The article goes on to say how this could eventually impact public schools. The mind reels at the the lawsuits that may be forthcoming as some very disturbed folks demand acceptance of their disturbance using this order as their argument.

This was an executive order, and Deval Patrick is rumored to play a major role in Oblabla's 2012 campaign. Imagine the executive orders he'd issue as a lame duck?

In a sane world, politicians try to please as many people as possible, and avoid stupid, controversial, unecessarily provocative actions. Politicians ought to care about their country, their state, their town. They ought to think about the future and how it will affect the people they know, and their own political future.

BTW, what exactly do you call the restroom now? What kind of signage must be used so as to not offend the various categories of potty preference? I think "sitters" and "standees" would work.

And as to all those laws that set requirements for the room formerly known as the ladies room, must they be applied equally? For example, I guess the room formerly known as the mens room must now have a couch. I guess the safest thing is to equip them identically.

What about someone who regards "him"self as female, still has the male equipment and prefers to stand - can s/he demand a urinal be installed in the room formerly known as the ladies room if that is his/her preferred place and method of waste elimination?

And what the Sam Hill is the definition of "reasonable accommodation" for something so patently unreasonable???

As a taxpayer and member of the private sector, I'm guessing the definition involves the words "very expensive".

I know some liberal women who work at state offices, and a few of them have gossiped about a cross-dressing frequent customer. I plan on informing them about the new heights of "celebrating diversity" they may soon reach the next time they head to the restroom.

In Provincetown, MA, where I have been going every year since 1977, the public bathrooms are often labeled "either" and "or."

That will probably be Deval's idea of "compromise" if he meets with enough outrage on this. I'm sure the business owners who will have to shell out $$$ to make those "improvements" will be thrilled. To take their businesses to New Hampshire, that is.
