CHICAGO (CBS) – Cook County sheriff’s officials have found bodies stacked on top of each other – some buried eight at a time — at a south suburban cemetery.

As CBS 2’s Susanna Song reports, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says Homewood Memorial Gardens, at 600 Ridge Rd. in Homewood, desecrated the bodies of people who couldn’t afford to purchase burial plots.

My grandfather died in 1920 and he is buried somewhere in an “indigent” portion of a cemetery.
There is nothing nefarious about this practice.

Instead of stacking them why don’t they cremate them all. Stacking has to have an odor.

Must have found this out during the latest census. Eight voters using the same address with different last names.

The cemetery’s owner spoke to CBS 2 by phone. He says there’s nothing in his current county contract that says coffins of the indigent can’t be stacked on top of each other for burial.

If true, then it falls back onto the state for not making that stipulation. Other countries dig up the dead and reuse plots. There will come a day when there will be no room for cemeteries and plots will be too expensive for the average family. Many government and local projects (fact - a school football field and a lake) have disturbed old cemeteries and it's a shame how many bodies were never moved or identified.

So they couldn't afford plots and were buried in a mass grave - what's wrong with that?

Most cities have a "potters field" where they bury homeless and other deadbeats.

Is society supposed to foot the bill for burial plots now too?

Here is an interesting bit about potters Island off of the Long Island Sound. According to this they keep strict records as to where each body is buried.

This is after all, the “Chicago Way” and Illinois is a part of Chicago. (A subservient part).

I know a lady who will be buried on top of her husband at the National Cemetery in San Antonio. I think it’s common practice.

“There is nothing nefarious about this practice.”

No there isn’t. Just this morning I was looking at cemetery records where my great grandfather was buried and saw some entries noted “Potters Field”. Had only seen that name in historical novels before.
