The Obama Administration has entered into direct, secret talks with senior Afghan Taliban leaders, several people briefed about the talks told me last week. The discussions are continuing; they are of an exploratory nature and do not yet amount to a peace negotiation. That may take some time: the first secret talks between the United States and representatives of North Vietnam took place in 1968; the Paris Peace Accords, intended to end direct U.S. military involvement in the war, were not agreed on until 1973.
When asked for comment on the talks, a White House spokesman said that the remarks that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made last Friday at the Asia Society offered a thorough representation of the U.S. position. Clinton had tough words for the Taliban, saying that they were confronted with a choice between political compromise and ostracism as an enemy of the international community. She added, I know that reconciling with an adversary that can be as brutal as the Taliban sounds distasteful, even unimaginable. And diplomacy would be easy if we only had to talk to our friends. But that is not how one makes peace. President Reagan understood that when he sat down with the Soviets. And Richard Holbrooke made this his lifes work. He negotiated face to face with Milosevic and ended a war.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
If they are secret, then why does everybody know about them?.....
Obama, I suggest you go into the cat herding business. This is far simpler than “peace talks” with the Talibuddies.
Yup. We surrender.
give us al zawarhi and bin laden, then we talk
Is this anything like, “US enters into direct talks with the Muslim Brotherhood”... about two years before Mubarak found out about it.
If you were Karzai, you’d best be making other arrangements. He has been making other arrangements, because he’s seen this coming.
Obama’s grand stategy is to hand Egypt and Jordan over to the Muslim Brotherhood, Honduras over to Chavez proxies, and Afghanistan over to the Taliban. And proclaim victory.
Russia went broke. When did they negotiate with Hitler or the Japanese?
did they send Jane Fonda again?
Is he giving them forclosed property in
Dearborn, MI?
You forgot to mention Israel.
Whats to talk about? They throw acid on little school girls. I thought we were going to kill them all. If not lets just go home. Let these 7th Century primatives get back to growing poppies, beating women, buggering boys and killing each other with great abandonment as they have for the last 2,000 years.
Yes, but thanks to round-the-clock negotiations, the Taliban have agreed to only throw acid on little school girls on alternate Thursdays.
You're right and I believe they are very much in the cross-hairs. Cairo and Amman are a prelude.
I honestly don't know whats going to happen but I do believe war is coming.
Is Obama apologizing?
The story of the scorpion and the frog comes to mind here.
Who has more experience negotiating with America's enemy?
Who else would you send?
Only now, He gets to go at the CIC's direction.
Not so “secret” now, huh? =.=
What I find so amazing is that Glenn Beck says that he has seen the proof that our state department participated with the Google agitation of the overthrow of Mubarak.
...and no one is talking about it.
