California: Orange County Regional Center is promoting a political rally in Huntington Beach

Posted on 02/20/2011 10:36:37 AM PST by redheadtoo

Next Tuesday (2-22-11) a political rally is being staged at the Huntington Beach pier. This rally is being promoted by the Regional Center of Orange County.

The 21 regional centers in California are private agencies that were set up by an act of the state legislature. Their job is to distribute state money to support programs for people with developmental disabilities.

Now the RCOC has become politically active.

RCOC has sent e-mails to the programs they support, calling on them to bring their disabled clients to the rally next Tuesday. Since the RCOC is the funding source for these agencies it would be unwise of them to refuse.

The email sent by the RCOC has instructions to the programs, maps, and some vitriolic rhetoric.

My questions are: How much time and money has the RCOC used to promote this rally? Will they be refunding the taxpayers for it?

Will RCOC staff be attending the rally? Will they be on the clock?

I feel that it is inappropriate for a regional center to engage in political activism.

I feel that it is inappropriate for a regional center to engage in political activism.

That's because you mistakenly believe we are a nation of laws.

That is no longer correct.

We are now a nation of looters.

Do you have the exact wording of the email? I went to their website and found no information.

I wish I had it for you. The text was read to me last Friday. I don’t have a copy. I recall that it claimed that the disabled were going to return to quiet lives of desperation if the funding was cut.

The sad part is this rally won’t help. It is the Public Sector Union employees who are taking more than their share.

I just checked out their web site myself. You’re right, there is no information. Perhaps you might like to send them an e-mail asking for information about the rally. They might send a copy to you.

Someone look into this.
They file a IRS Form 990 which means they are a nonprofit organization.
There are strict rules about doing political stuff.
If they violate the regulations, they can lose their nonprofit status.

Sad. I provided dance party and dance instruction services for the dev disabled in Maryland from 1990 until about 2005 - usually at a deep or very deep discount. I choose my charities and I will not be bullied.

TaxPayer, I’ve finally found something for you. The rally is being organized by a group called Hands Across OC. There website, cleverly enough, is called handsacrossoc.org.

Along the right hand side of the web page is a list of supporting organizations. Scroll down a bit and you will find the Regional Canter of Orange County.

The website reads: We will gather 15,000 people (last I heard they had 700 confirmed.) at the Huntington Beach Pier to show the world we are important. We have a voice. We will not go back to segregation, isolation and lives of quiet desperation. Stand with us.
