I bought them from a roadside truck somewhere near Mount Desert Island, several years ago now, for 79¢ a pound.

ayuh.

Doesn't seems that long ago that they were on 69cents a pound - but still, buying from the trucks - the only Mainer thing to do - is still a lot cheaper’n the store.

And I have a neighbor up the road who I get most of my seafood from - even cheaper. Soon will be the steamers and mussels - nom nom (I get crab meat rolls from our village store - where he sells his crab meat - and get the roll for $2.99. Doubt you could beat that anywhere, ‘cept hauling and picking yourself. ;o)

What a great price! I can't wait for the roadside shacks to open in the spring!

You mean you can treat soft-shelled lobster like we treat soft-shelled blue crab (God I’m hungry now) and eat the whole thing?

Don’t know.
Perhaps daffy will let us in on it.

I think the fuss is purely historical and dates to before refrigeration when fresh fish was unavailable. Having lived on the ocean and catching both fish and lobster from my boat I’d eat the fish and give away the lobsters.

Same day fish beats a bug everytime.

Good night nurse! NO! According to chowhound: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/567316

Not at all like a crab is breaded and the whole thing is consumed.

It has to do with the amount of water; softshell flesh can be *mushy* and less flavorful, imo.

Thanks.

My ignorance of soft shelled lobster stems from never having seen them for sale. Perhaps they are off limits in NY. The only time I’d ever even seen them was when we’d pull up a trap with our anchor when I worked on open boats. We’d throw back the softs, take the hard, re-bait the trap and send it back down.

If you don't watch them carefully, lobsters can get stringy.

In maine, pulling up another's pot may get you some lead.

Yup. Same in the NY Bight. But since we both used the same grounds, a peaceful co-existance reigned for the most part. In exchange for untangling the mess and not just cutting the gear loose from our hook, a small reward was in order. :) Although the Captains would try not to have it happen, when fishing at night, fouls were inevitable. We used to call the "17 Fathoms" grounds "The Mine Field."

Peaceful is good. Were you a long-liner?

Nah, I worked inshore on open (party) boats. The only time we hit the canyon was in the fall for tuna. Spent a short (but seemingly interminable) time on a dragger also.

Party boats...there's a job worth hating, and making you wish you did something else. ;D

My son spends a lot of time around the Canyon hunting tuna.

Very true. I started fishing at the age of five. Loved it for decades. Today, sixty one years later, I fish freshwater here in WV. But for the first five years after I left "The Bay", I never even touched a rod.
