In receiving communion at a Mass offered by the Roman Catholic bishop of Albany, NY, that states governor, Andrew Cuomo, who supports abortion, gay marriage, and lives with his girlfriend, committed an objectively sacrilegious act that produces grave scandal, according to Dr. Edward Peters, a top expert in Catholic Church law and a consultant to the highest court at the Vatican.
Peters specifically cited Cuomo's cohabiting with Food Network hostess Sandra Lee as "publicly acting in violation of a fundamental moral expectation of the Church," and that "as long as he persists in such conduct, he should refrain from taking Holy Communion" and "if he approaches for Holy Communion, he should be denied the august sacrament in accord with Canon 915."
Canon 915 [2], from the Church's Code of Canon Law, says that persons who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to holy communion.
In addition, based on the news reports of the Mass and the sermon given by Bp. Howard Hubbard, the bishops remarks constituted a failure in pastoral care, said Peters, largely for what the prelate did not say, than for what he did say.
Bp. Hubbard, faced with a prominent Catholic leader of whom, it may be fairly said, there are great expectations, did not challenge the governor to begin his reform of the state with a reform of his person, said Peters.
CNSNews.com spoke by e-mail with Dr. Peters [3], who was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI last year as a referendarius (consultant) to the Apostolic Signatura, the Churchs highest administrative tribunal, itself subject only to the Pope and under the direction of Cardinal Raymond Burke, the archbishop emeritus of St. Louis, Mo.
Peters comments concerning Gov. Cuomo, a Catholic and a Democrat, were made in reference to Canon Law, the...

FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.
As is that rodent Father of his, he should be excomunicarted for his treatment of Austin Cardnal Vaughan.
Two sewer trout.
Does anyone know if he received communion at the big shindig at St. Peters, when Dolan, Bloomy, and all the bigshots were there?
I don’t know.
“Hi, I’m Sandra Lee! Let’s check out tablescape!”
apparently cohabitating with a woman gets you deeper in Dutch with the Catholic Church than a career pushing public policies which results in....oh, I dunno....tens of thousands of abortions?
Andy & Sandy wouldn’t dare show up at St Pat’s in NYC. Archbishop Dolan would refuse them communion.
Saint Patrick’s Day is coming up March 17.
Since he was earlier married to a Kennedy, is that marriage officially annulled, or are they divorced? I remember a time when being divorced caused the Church to deny the sacraments. But this ain’t the Catholic Church I knew, tho it is getting closer in many respects to ‘that old time religion.’ What they operated the past 40 years or so was horrible, imo.
I’m a Protestant, not a RC, so I don’t know all the technicalities.
I am from NY and know that Andrew was married to Kerry Kennedy, daughter of RFK. they had a very messy divorce. Sandra Lee is also RC & divorced, but no children.
I think that Cuomo’s open support of Abortion is what makes him anathema to Archbishop Dolan of NY, who is closely associated with Pope Benedict XVI & shares his views.

yes, he received Communion at some big function with the gf at his side right after he was elected. he doomed himself that day.
Reading for comprehension is a good thing.
The media seems to be stressing that Cuomo is living with his girlfriend, but I wish they would stress just as much that it is also Cuomo’s pro-abortion and pro-gay so-called “marriage” stands, as well, and all of these should be reasons to deny him Communion, according to the Catholic teaching.
Cuomo should continue to attend Church, but he should refrain from receiving Communion, until he realizes that abortion, gay “marriage,” and living with his girl friend are all extremely wrong.
If he doesn’t refrain on his own, he should be denied Communion. This is not political; it is the Church’s teachings.
Thanks for the ping!
You sure? Who was presiding? I mean, the archbishop was there. If Cuomo received communion there, Dolan’s looking rather feeble.
It was within days of his winning the governorship, he had his gf and daughters with him. The Church hierarchy was there. Not sure who exactly it was now as I read it back in November of 2010.
Peters criticized Albany Bishop Howard Hubbard for committing a failure in pastoral care by offering Communion to Cuomo and Lee during a Jan. 2 mass Cuomo attended with Lee, his three daughters and Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy.
Looks like it was Hubbard in the pic. He is good buddies with my own Bishop Clark.
