Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has spent nearly his entire life around powerful Republican politicians.

So imagine his surprise when he learned that his birth certificate bears the John Hancock of one of the 20th century’s most powerful Democrats: the late Chicago mayor and Democratic Party boss Richard J. Daley. posted using frpa

This is ironic and one of life's "truth is stranger than fiction" moments.

Now, there is presidential material. Loads of experience, knowledge and skills. This man drives circles around the junior jass, Urkel.

Rummy was born in 1932....
Daley wasn’t Cook County Clerk until 1950...

I didn’t get a birth certificate until I had to get my driver’s license at 16.

My first thought is that Rumsfeld was throwing down the gauntlet....”I was looking at my birth certificate the other day....”

Why would he bring this up? It’s a very strange comment unless you’re trying to draw attention to the fact that you have a birth certificate that you’re willing to discuss. Kinda different from the current occupant of the White HOuse!

I had to get mine. It was a certified copy of the original signed rubber stamped by the Clerk of Cook County at the time of my request - Stanley Kusper Jr.

“Rummy was born in 1932....Daley wasn’t Cook County Clerk until 1950...”

I was born in 1950, just a few blocks from Obama’s Chicago home, and Richard J. Daley really did sign my birth certificate.

Does that mean I'm not a Natural Born Citizen?

I didn’t get a birth certificate until I had to get my driver’s license at 16.

But you had one on file from the day (really a few days later) you were born. In most states, the attending doctor and another 'witness' to the birth sign them certifying the date, time, sex, and names of the parents including mother's maiden name. It is then filed in the county records office, theoretically, for eternity. It's the law.

When you needed a birth certificate for your driver's license, passport or whatever, what you really get is a certified 'copy' of your birth certificate that does not list all the details of the real certificate such as the attending physician, time of birth, etc. The original birth certificate hand signed by the doctor and witness which contains greater detail always remains in the records section of the county of your birth. I suppose if you were interested, you could ask to see it, but they are not going to let you walk out the door with it.

My birth certificate from a NYC hospital has none of that info. A fancy parchment with the Hosptal logo and my name and birth date in Calligraphy, Signed by some official, with a ribbon and gold seal. That is the BC my parents brought me home with.
No problem getting my US Passport when I was 14 and renewing up unt the present. Same for driver’s license, and marriage license.
Every County has it’s own; every hospital did it differently.
When I thought it was lost a few years ago I had no problem getting copies from the City .

Go to City Hall and ask to see the original copy filed with the city. It will be different and have more information.

What you have, if it has the county (or borough in NY City) seal stamped in, is indeed a legal document for things such as passports. Perhaps NYC provided those as a courtesy when you were born. Not all juristiction would do that. But it is not the so-called long form birth certificate which has much greater detail. Two different things.
