MANAGUA, Nicaragua -- Nicaragua's leftist President Daniel Ortega says he has telephoned Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to express his solidarity.

Ortega says he has called several times this week because Gadhafi "is again waging a great battle" to defend the unity of his nation.

Human rights groups say more than 200 people have died as Libyan security forces crack down on protesters.

Ortega has long been an ally of the Libyan leader, based in part on a shared distrust of the United States.

Ortega says that "it's at difficult times that loyalty and resolve are put to the test."

There is a terrible, unholy alliance between the radical left and the Islamists that is increasingly apparent and alarming. The communists didn’t disappear, they’ve simply undermined us from within and are cooperating with the Islamists to bring down the capitalist system from without.

There is nothing more solid than the fears and the friendship of dictators.

I am surprised Hollywood hasn't made a tear-jerking movie about such a warm friendship.

We are back in 1985 but the difference is Obama is on hold waiting for Ortega to finish with Momar to find out what he needs to do next.

Are you sure that’s Harkin? Whoever it is he’s looking at Ortega with lust in his eyes. It’s revolting.

Kaddafi is not an Islamist, he wiped the Muslim Brotherhood et al out. Probably to save his throne, but he did it

Are Oliver Stone and Sean Penn collaborating on the movie?

Looks like next year’s academy award winner to me.

Oh, please. Danny's a smooth-talking punk and so is Mad Mo, and that's what allies them. Hugo Chavez, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, same story. Were the United States to be judged solely by the quality of her enemies these days we'd be doing pretty well.

Beat me to it, amazing how little people know about this turkey. He is like Hussein, he gives lip service to religion.

It sure exposes who the rats are whenever a Communist dictator is overthrown. I remember François Mitterrand was quite dismayed to see the monstrous Ceausescu and his wicked wife take a bullet from a peoples’ tribunal back in 1989 or so, and I heartily hated his guts thereafter.

I hope that Gaddafi’s severed head will soon be mounted on a pike as an object of horror for Chavez, Ortega, Ahmedinejad, and all the other left wing and Islamist rascals.

Nicaragua's leftist President Daniel Ortega

It amazes me how even an out and out communist, literally, is still soft-pedaled as "leftist" (if not "left-leaning") by the media. At the same time, it's ironically telling on what leftist has come to mean.

Maybe we need to send Ortega a Hallmark well wish card and remind him that we would be more than happy to assist any
of his unhappier citizens, like we did 30 years ago.

However, we won’t be re-hiring Eugene Hasenfus to kick the cargo.
