Gingrich: Obama Sparks 'Constitutional Crisis,' Raises Impeachment Specter

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV Friday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said President Barack Obama’s decision not to fully enforce the Defense of Marriage law has sparked a constitutional crisis as he has directly violated his constitutional duties by arbitrarily suspending a law.

Gingrich for the first time raised the specter of Obama’s removal from office, noting that, if a “President Sarah Palin” had taken a similar action, there would have been immediate calls for her impeachment.

Obama Attorney General Eric Holder said on Wednesday that the administration will not defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act in the courts, which has banned recognition of same-sex marriage for 15 years. President Clinton signed the act into law in 1996.

Obama’s decision to forego a legal defense of the law has caused a firestorm of anger from conservative groups.

Gingrich slammed Obama for his decision, telling Newsmax that he is not a “one-person Supreme Court” and his decision sets a “very dangerous precedent” that must not be allowed to stand.

I say just let Barry keep the hits on rolling. One article of impeachment after another.

I agree with Newt but, at present, he’s just another private citizen with an opinion-I don’t see a “constitutional crisis”. FWIW, it does appear that Newt really, really wants to be the POTUS.

the administration will not defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act in the courts,

So what? That's not the same as not enforcing it. It just means they won't defend it in court. Fine. They aren't obligated. Gingrich's argument is nuts.

As for a President Palin, I hope she wouldn't send the justice dept. to defend, say, Obamacare in court. Same thing.

I don’t think an impeachment will ever happen. We either have to wait till 2012, or we can riot in the streets like they did in Egypt.

“one-person Supreme Court”

You’d think the Supremes are getting tired of Obama admonishing them in the SOTU, encroaching on their turf, and ignoring decisions from federal judges. Striking down Obamacare would send him a good message.

Striking down Obamacare has not, in fact, sent him any kind of message. He’s ignoring it.

Gingrich is a pimp.

Obama is not refusing to enforce the law. If he did so, I would support his removal.

Rather, he is exercising the independent judgement which is the right of EACH branch, in this case a judgement about what arguments in court by the Solicitor General are valid.

As soon as he commands the IRS to tax homosexuals pretending to be married at a lower rate, I’m right there.

But Presidents and Congress have been MUCH too deferential to the (nonexistent) power of judicial modification of the Constitution, and if rebelling against THAT is all he’s doing, I’m OK with it.
