Fox411's Dr. Oscar Offers 2011 Oscar Predictions.
FoxNews.com ^ | 2/22/11 | Tariq Khan

BEST PICTURE

Nominees: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter's Bone

Prediction: “The King’s Speech”

The bottom line: while Oscar voters appear to really like “The Social Network,” they LOVE “The King’s Speech.” In many ways, it’s a throwback to the Oscar film of yesterday – like “Casablanca,” “Around the World in 80 Days,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Godfather” and “Out of Africa.” Grand art direction and costumes, beautiful cinematography and score, magnificent performances and an examination of history – “The King’s Speech” has it all.

Come Sunday night, it will have the Best Picture Oscar, as well.

BEST ACTOR

Prediction: Colin Firth, “The King’s Speech”

BEST ACTRESS

Prediction: Natalie Portman, “Black Swan”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Prediction: Christian Bale, “The Fighter”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Prediction: Melissa Leo, “The Fighter”

TOPICS: Culture/Society
KEYWORDS: academyawards; oscar
I have seen three out of ten. INCEPTION, TRUE GRIT, and THE KING'S SPEECH. My vote for the best pic would go to THE KING'S SPEECH.

I don't think I would be interested in watching 127 HOURS and WINTER'S BONE...

I am interested in watching THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and TOY STORY 3 on DVD...

I have to say that I liked TRUE GRIT more than NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MAN...

127 hours is incredible. James Franco does a great job. I was not particularly interested either, but some friends wanted to go and so I went and I was SOOOOOO glad that I did. The Social Network is really good....I wasn’t interested in seeing it either but glad that I went to the theater. The Kids are alright I saw on DVD....it was good but of course a liberal movie. I want to see the King’s Speech when I have the opportunity too. The Fighter is not interesting to me but probably will see it at some point. True Grit, Inception Winter’s Bone, Toy Story 3, I have no desire to see.

I thought The Kings Speech was predictable, boring, and lame.

On the other hand The Social Network was a brilliant movie and deserves the Oscar. The creepy founder of Facebook was a mixed OCD/Autistic genius with the ethics of a snake.

True Grit was also outstanding, far better than the Kings Speech.

Have seen TRUE GRIT, THE FIGHTER, INCEPTION, WINTER’S BONE, and BLACK SWAN. Of those I would vote for TRUE GRIT as Best Picture with THE FIGHTER a close second.

WINTER’S BONE was an essentially depressing story, but did have two great performances.

I thought True Grit was good...very.

Bridges may have done it more justice than Duke....and I grew up loving Duke as a boy when he made movies several times a year.

A little bitty movie I really liked filmed in Ozarks Missouri was the Winter Bones.

gritty gritty but man that little girl has heart...the Jew from Deadwood (the series) sorta steals the movie too.

I usually eschew the artsy-fartsy films, but this time I have to say everything I have heard about “The King’s Speech” from my friends, the radio hosts I respect and even the critics (who I generally ignore) says this is a must-see movie.

Fortunately, I am trying to restart “take the wife for a date” night once a week, so this will be the next week’s “movie” part (the last one was TRON II 3D — fun but tedious).

it just dawned on me after I posted that Winter Bone is nominated

wow...what a small budget flick with local talent

amazing...do not sell it short

but I know some folks only like Big Movies

and many kids only like blockbusters...not you...i have no idea

I also have for years thought for the means they have...many foreign films beat ours

it is very very difficult for me to sit through a flick today and not be irritated by white guilt, social engineering, lib comments, Christian bashing or gratuitous homosexuality...demeaning southerners or rural folks

you can almost count on it

neither Winter Bones or True Grit had any of that...have not seen Kings Speech

Inception seemed odd..the concept

Social Network...maybe when it comes on Dish.....don't know about TKAA

liked True Grit as well as anything since Departed.

WINTER’S BONE was an essentially depressing story

very but irrelevant....think Schindler's List for starters

the heroine in Winter Bones was very redeeming to me...she was inspiring..brought tears to my old jaded eyes...a daughter her dead daddy shoulda been proud of

and like I said...the guy who played the Jew in Deadwood series was excellent..so good I couldn't tell it was him for 30 minutes

damn you make it sound like a chore..look at my homepage...if we don't get time together we get kid crazy

there are fringe benefits you know..;>)

I love when we go to a honky tonk when we have a late night sitter and that damned song JR said he liked once.."Save a Horse..."...man all the gals bar and table dance...life doesn't get better than that

ahem....quiet dinners are nice too

>>damn you make it sound like a chore..look at my homepage...if we don’t get time together we get kid crazy<<

OMG LOL — that did come out badly, didn’t it?

I meant I am rekindling the romance that we sort of misplaced. We don’t have kids so it is a little easier for us. We almost lost that loving feeling and it is a lot of fun getting it back.

The “chore” part is flying cross-country (5,000 miles, 20 hours) every week and then getting my sorry butt up from the couch when I am sort of still not in either time zone.

But when I stick that scissors-jack under my behind and actually get to moving, I am glad every time.

Guys, no matter what you are doing and no matter how tired you get, date your wife. It is rewarding in more ways than I can say.

Winter’s Bone dealt with a strata of people that generally ignored by the mainstream culture. Most people would seem to want to forget that people in deep Appalachia live like that. Urban poverty is more chic I guess.

Missouri Ozarks..actually.

I just truly thought the character of the young girl shone incredibly.

At least unlike Deliverance which so many folks today treat like a documentary...Winter Bone has some foot in the reality of meth industry existence.

Deliverance...I mean get real. I spend a lot of time in real Appalachia..they may shoot you if you get in their pot field and are very leery of strangers. But snatching strangers so they can sodomize fat men?

That is about as out of character as Muslims stealing pigs..why did I think of pigs..lol

Hollywood. Probably too much coke in creating Deliverance...nicely filmed though..the filters and use of light and angles and whatnot was superb.

Never read Dickey's novel so not sure how the movie follows it. Boorman went on to more things for sure.

But the stereotype Deliverance created about eastern Mountain folks and banjos will last a long time still unfairly.

Urban poverty is more excused. White poverty ignored..always been like that. There is also less predation unless caught up in it..another reason it's ignored.

but let's don't forget..and since I live very near where Appalachia starts on the eastern slope of the Cumberland mountains in TN...I'm about 30 miles due west and have several folks from the true region of Smith, Jackson and Cumberland counties who work for me. What was portrayed in Bone was a tiny segment...it is simply not like that as a rule. Most country folks work in nearby towns and have normal lives. Which again differentiates it from urban lower class which is more all encompassing of the community with criminal exchange and crime and illegitimacy etc.

ok...sociology lesson over...I really liked the movie and glad it got some notice.

But I still am very jacked up with Bridges asCogburn..incredible

and God bless the Cohens...they never really insult me with PC crap and preaching as a rule even in O’ Brother..at least it was light hearted and satirical treatment of my homestate

a state too green so they had to sepia it..true

Hawkes character is scary but he loves the girl..as he should..she’s his blood and those jokers killed his brother

even if his brother was a rake...you still can’t take that lying down

i liked that flick so much I told my wife about it first thing the next morning

Hawkes was sympathetic in Deadwood too you know..took in the whore and was sort of the conscience of the show..man that series had way too much cursing..even for me....and all the children die and the women are mostly treated so terrible.

You read how folks spoke back them from accounts and that was not accurate. Folks back then did not curse like they were in Australia..

Though Carradines comments about how that jerk who shot him lips look when he speaks has never left me...I think that when someone is speaking to me that irritates me or is full of themself
