The Democrats' Left Turn
American Spectator ^ | February 2011 | W. James Antle, III

Posted on 02/26/2011 12:15:00 AM PST by neverdem

DID THE DEMOCRATS LEARN ANYTHING from the midterm elections? It didn't take long for the party's congressional wing, at least, to reveal that the answer is "no." House Democrats didn't just retain ousted Speaker Nancy Pelosi...

--snip--

Yet liberals are not in the mood to let these Democratic senators do what it takes to win re-election. Politico reported on the rebellion on the left against Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), a darling of the netroots during the 2006 campaign, for his vote against the DREAM Act. "Not only will I do absolutely nothing to help his reelection bid, but I will take every opportunity I get to remind people that he is so morally bankrupt that he'll try to score political points off the backs of innocent kids who want to go to college or serve their country in the military," wrote Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas.

Moulitsas continued: "To me he is the Blanche Lincoln of 2012 -- the Democrat I will most be happy to see go down in defeat. And he will. Nothing guarantees a Republican victory more than trying to pretend to be one of them." Remember that Tester, a near-perfect candidate running against a deeply flawed Republican incumbent in a landslide year for the Democrats, won his first term by just 3,500 votes. David Frum, a critic of purism among conservatives, acknowledges that it is sometimes "rational to prefer to lose a campaign -- even a congressional majority -- to score a big and enduring gain," citing health care as an example. "But the DREAM Act?"

--snip--

If liberals keep pushing Democrats to the left of Obama, people will no longer ask if the party has learned anything from electoral defeat. Instead they will have to ask another question: Do the Democrats have a death wish?

They have a death wish. Do they understand that? IMHO, no, at least as far as their true believers go. Obama is a true believer. To say he and their leadership in Congress have a "tin ear" is an understatement.

Gay marriage, DREAM Act, DADT repeal, doubling the national debt, suing Arizona, destroying NASA, skyrocketing gas prices, limpwristed foreign policy, chronic unemployment, Obamacare, Pigford reparations scam ...

I am SOLD on voting against Obama in 2012.

The real question is, will the Republicans nominate someone who is worth voting for with a strong brand that we can get behind, or will the establishment get their way and nominate another Dole or a Juan McCain (or even worse a W.) that will go down in flames.

I’m not voting for Haley Barbour, Newt Gingrich, Flip Romney, Huckster or Jeb Bush under any circumstances. David Brooks’ recent praise of Mitch Daniels in the NY Times has me leaning toward crossing him off my list too.

If Sarah Palin would run on a strong border security platform, she would get my vote. I don’t know what to make though of any of the other candidates.

Agree with you. I liked Herman Cain until today. Chris Christie is a terrific pro-lifer but his anti-gun, pro-Mosque and something else stance rules him out. I liked Pence but he’s smart and not running - the really smart ones never do. I love Michele Bachman but I don’t think she would have the stamina it would take though with West as her VP it might work. Jim DeMint would be a yes but he’s not running. Then there’s our Sarah, the ace in the hole, she’s so shrewd she’ll get nominated if that’s what she wants...our repub elite will hate it but since we had to put up with their McCains and Doles...it’s our turn. I would really would like some backbone and less of the diplomat.

I mildly disagree with the opening premise. The dems did indeed learn from the midterms that the country leans right, and may very well do so for the forseeable future after seeing how Obama’s spending binge has only driven us deeper into that ditch.

The left are pushing HARD against this reality because leftists by nature have the temperament of children—they don’t care about ‘facts’ or ‘reality,’ they want what they want, and when do they want it? NOW!

I think the very idea that they had their chance and lost infuriated them because they were SOOOOO close to their dreams—A Black President! Healthcare for all! The USA no longer a world power! Swords into plowshares! Rush Limbaugh defeated by Fairness Doctrine ‘competition’!

But you don’t just ‘get’ all that stuff. The thing is, when you get down to it, leftists think they deserve what they want for one reason: They REEEEEALLY want it! Isn’t that reason enough to give it to them?

Now the rest of the country has said “Enough with this foolishness,” and the leftists aren’t going to just say “Oh, all right,” as a reasonable person would.

if they were reasonable, they wouldn’t be leftists.

They have a point. No one wants a squishy milquetoast as a politician. On both sides there must be a clear difference in political thought so voters can make a choice.

That said, Democrats have yet to figure out that Leftist thought is a very small minority in the beliefs of Americans.

What always gets them elected in significant numbers is when Republican candidates forget to run on/act on Conservative beliefs.

Another problem they have is that the hippy Baby Boomer types that are their core supporters are not-so-slowly starting to die off. They don’t have too many more election cycles left before they may be relegated to permanent minority power status, along with the Greens.

They are desperate to get their policies entrenched before time runs out - because they know that repealing a long-emplaced policy is very, very difficult.

Sadly many Elderly Roosevelt Democrats fall in this category.

They no longer have power or influence in the Democrat party, as Zell Miller proved.

They shouldn’t be voting Democrat unless they’re complete idiots at this point, anyway.

Sadly, that is Pittsburgh. The most aged county in the US (Dade was during winter months prior to the depression). Just what is. Nothing is going to change it. The City is dyeing because of this political bent. All of the suburbs now are Republican. The city pulls the entire political system down. One of the main reasons for the youth flight from there. It is changing. In a morbid sense.

“That said, Democrats have yet to figure out that Leftist thought is a very small minority in the beliefs of Americans.”

Many Democrats from the Roosevelt era who are now in their 70’s-80’s have been conditioned by AARP to vote for anything with a (D) next to their name. They don’t know Obama is a Communist. All they know is he is a Democrat.

The “victims” the left uses to further their political agenda are “mushrooms.”

That’s what I call them. Hey, is “Mushroom” a Freeper term? Can we make it one? Definition: Democrat voter kept in the closet by the left and fed nothing but crap.

I think several of these politicians who “are not running” have the intention on really doing so. They don’t want the media zeroing in on them right now.

Haley Barbour, Newt Gingrich, Flip Romney, Huckster or Jeb Bush

I could vote for Haley Barbour just to see liberal panties in a major, genital pain inducing twist for four or eight years. They’d hate him for his accent alone. I agree 1,000% on the rest of them (might as well vote Dem), with the sorta, kinda exception of Jeb Bush. I could close my nose with two clothes pins, take a shot of Wild Turkey Rare Breed (108 proof) and vote for him (I’d have to do some cussin’ afterwards).

You have style and that was a very good piece.

When we separate out all the sanctimonious blather we see here, you have it pretty much right.

I will add that the left DOES understand that their world view is the minority point of view. Small minority. The sands of time are running against them. Thus, their spoiled-brat-teenager mentality kicks into high gear. They know that the "adults" are coming home to spoil their little me-me-me party.

They may have a death wish. On the other hand, seeing the huge mass of college students standing with the left (and voting democrat one or more times per election) doesn’t lend itself to a positive outlook.

These brainwashed masses, having sat through several semesters of mind-numbing leftism as taught by aging draft-dodging hippies, seem to be maintaining their love for communism and fascism. I suppose many will outgrow it when they enter the real world, but as long as the left owns our colleges and schools, our younger adults will continue to be spoon fed the marxist ideology. And they will vote that way, often both at home (by absentee ballot) and in person at school.

Tester is just another win at any cost Democrat. He probably approved the comments against him so that he can appear to be more conservative in MT. He knows the Democrat game plan in MT, “Run as a conservative, vote as a liberal.”

In a way, yes. The fatal flaw of "progressivism" is that like all progressive diseases, it has no stop mechanism, and ends only with the destruction of the host.

We are seeing a harbinger of that now, as the 'rats in Washington expose themselves as being organically incapable of fiscal restraint. The president says "we have to live within our means" and then issues a "budget" with the biggest deficit of all time. And his toadies in Congress whine that they cannot cut even one dollar.
