Republicans Defend First Lady’s Obesity Efforts
Wall Street Journal ^ | 2/27/2011 | Bill Tomson

Two prominent Republicans, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and likely 2012 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, came to the defense of First Lady Michelle Obama’s efforts to reduce childhood obesity.

Speaking on separate Sunday talk shows, the Republicans said they stood behind Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign despite conservative criticism.

Mr. Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor who shed many pounds himself when in office, said on “Fox News Sunday” that obesity is a problem threatening the welfare of the entire country.

“What Michelle Obama is proposing is not that the government tells you that you can’t eat dessert,” Mr. Huckabee said. Rather, the first lady wants Americans “to recognize that we have a serious obesity crisis–which we do,” Mr. Huckabee said.

The problem isn't the message, it is the hypocrisy of the messenger.

I agree obesity is a problem. Where I draw the line is how MO is pressuring companies to change their capitalist pursuit of profit.

Perhaps she ought to focus MORE on getting people as individuals to EXERCISE and watch what THEY eat more, instead of pointing fingers at grocers and Wal-Mart.

See, it always starts as a simple “volunteer” effort with the socialists...then it turns into legislation, regulation, and gubmint control.

Congrats on your weight loss...I’m working with the same program, trying to get to an intermediate goal by losing 26 more lbs...my ultimate goal is to lose about 60.

One step at a time. The new system allows you to eat almost all fruit w/ zero points. :)

It looks like her efforts are paying off. She is more grotesque every day.

She has NO business interfering in MY restaurant meals, OR MY children’s school lunches. The former is a personal issue, the latter is a state or local issue.

Big Government Republicans...if you liked the Big Government policies of G. W. Bush, you'll absolutely love the policies of Huckabee and Christie - socialists.

Please leave conservative issues to those who understand them seeing that you don’t, but thanks for your input.

> Then she needs to LEAD BY EXAMPLE.

> Telling us all about what we should be feeding our kids, and the jetting off to Colorado and stuffing her face with ribs, is the height of hypocrisy.

Because I’m a Weight Watchers lifetime member (hit my goal weight) I follow these issues pretty closely.

Meshell definitely was spendthrifting tax money away, which is what Rush should have focused on, but she was eating right. She had 1 short rib as her main course, which is about 600 calories. Not great if you eat it everyday if you’re sedentary, but perfectly healthy if you’ve been active all day (which she had been). And by the way, when did she ever say, “Nobody can have X”? She says what a lot of nutritionists say, which is, “Try eating more fruit and vegetables, try growing your own veggies. Pay attention to portions. Find ways to exercise more.”

I’ve had “friends” who are exactly like Rush on food. They go on these crash diets and lose a ton of weight by eating packaged/measured food along with appetite suppresants. Then they gain it all back when they go off the diet. They never learn how to have a steady lifestyle of healthy eating. And they always have something snarky to say when we go out to eat together and I get a dessert (and leave half of it on the plate).... “oooh, you’re on Weight Watchers, you can’t have THAT”. I can have anything I want because I track and balance what I eat. I’m at a healthy BMI, I feel great, and my doctor says I’m in the best shape of my life.

Rush should stick to his strengths and going after Meshell for her spending, which is atrocious. Or even that she was hogging the ski lifts with her queenly privilege and Marie Antoinetting around. Going after her food and weight? Makes him look ridiculous, given that he is still morbidly obese.

> He says he hates to exercise, but Kathryn should force him for the sake of his health. Considering his wealth he could install the best private gym and hire the best trainer. I’m sure he has nice swimming pool and a beautiful beach out his back door. He could hire a health-conscious chef that could prepare him healthy meals. Anyone with his means should be a lot healthier.

Nobody can force anybody else to act healthier. Rush has to come to that conclusion himself. I came to that after my doctor was unusually blunt with me after a checkup where I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes and starting to have a lot of knee and back problems. He said my weight was killing me and I needed to do something about it. I got onto Weight Watchers, started walking every day (5 minutes was all I could do in the beginning, but I stuck with it). Having buddies from WW to keep me on track and go on walks with me helped. I hope Rush gets the message soon because we’re going to lose him prematurely if he doesn’t wake up.

I know, it’s awesome! Although I have to make sure I don’t eat too many fruits because that really jacks my blood sugar. Often what I’ll do is something like dipping fresh strawberries in fat free greek yogurt which is amazingly creamy — and with the protein in that it buffers the sugar in the fruit perfectly to avoid a spike.

How is this different than any other First Lady project?

Same thing goes for them. They're not elected. They should STFU.

Rush did NOT attack Michelle for her weight.
He brought up the fact that she is a hypocrite, and she is, period.

Again, if she is going to sponsor her “Let’s Move” campaign, then she needs to lead by example.

There are innumerable pictures of her eating ice cream, hamburgers, french fries and so on..
and now this:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2681381/posts

Lots of kids look up to her, and if she does not follow her own advice, where does that leave them?

I find it ironic and sad that someone who struggles with weight would turn around and attack Rush for his.

Good day.

Took a look at her Let’s Move page. It’s a lot of nice ideas, but no mention of the BMI — a very important measurement. Everyone should know what their best BMI is ...but NO ONE will stress this. People should also truly know how many calories it takes to maintain their weight, and how many it takes to lose. My magic number: 1200 cals/day as a woman to lose ...have lost 13 lbs since January ... so I’m pleased w/ that and am just plugging away at it. I have also shot for 30 mins a day at least ...on the treadmill.

I’m in a masters nursing program and am doing a research project on this. The government has been putting out info papers for years — this is nothing new. There’s nothing wrong with educating people. I think it takes a lot of education on just how calorie laden our food is ...and to make people understand how overweight they really are .... but you can’t force people. Just give them the info and they will either do it or they won’t ...it has to be a personal decision. It’s also within the realm of primary care docs ... THIS is who we should leave this to ...not MO.
