Majority in Poll Back Employees in Public Sector Unions [NYTimes/CBS]

Majority in Poll Back Employees in Public Sector Unions

By MICHAEL COOPER and MEGAN THEE-BRENAN

As labor battles erupt in state capitals around the nation, a majority of Americans say they oppose efforts to weaken the collective bargaining rights of public employee unions and are also against cutting the pay or benefits of public workers to reduce state budget deficits, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

...But the nationwide poll found that embattled public employee unions have the support of most Americans — and most independents — as they fight the efforts of newly elected Republican governors in Wisconsin and Ohio to weaken their bargaining powers, and the attempts of governors from both parties to cut their pay or benefits.

Governors in both parties have been making the case that public workers are either overpaid or have overly generous health and pension benefits. But 61 percent of those polled — including just over half of Republicans — said they thought the salaries and benefits of most public employees were either “about right” or “too low” for the work they do.

Tax increases were not as unpopular among those surveyed as they are among many governors, who have vowed to avoid them. Asked how they would choose to reduce their state’s deficits, those polled preferred tax increases over benefit cuts for state workers by nearly two to one. Given a list of options to reduce the deficit, 40 percent said they would increase taxes, 22 percent chose decreasing the benefits of public employees, 20 percent said they would cut financing for roads and 3 percent said they would cut financing for education.

PPP polls are untrustworthy. As for this specific one, see Legal Insurretion blog for a breakdown on how crooked it is.

A democrat poll with a deceptive question as the dems do using the lamestream media. They fix the results of polls much as they fix the unemployment numbers they caused by collective bargaining.

Don’t worry, the corrections will come next week. This is out of the template. They just fit in their cause and the poll works for them.

Does this mean that, if Walker doesn't cave, he'll be praised by the media as having "made hard choices," like when Lowell Weicker, then Governor of Connecticut, imposed an income tax that no one wanted, and was given a "Courage Award" by Caroline Kennedy?

If Walker doesn't cave, will he be called "statesmanlike," as are other elected leaders who govern "against the will of the people" ?

First, the partisan split in the sample gave a ten-point advantage to Democrats. Their sample for this poll had a D/R/I split of 36/26/31, an absurd sample for political polling. In December, Rasmussen’s general-population survey put Republicans ahead, 36.0% to 34.7% for Democrats. A recent poll by Gallup shows erosion in Democratic affiliation all through 2010. In 2008, Barack Obama won the popular vote by seven points nationwide, and the NYT/CBS poll assumes that the electorate has grown more Democratic in 2011.

I think they are farrrrr too generous. They should assume:

  1. Democrats make up 783% of the population.
  2. Republicans make up -653% of the population.
  3. Independents make up -30% of the population.

That way, they can show the TRUE makeup of America.

Y'see.

It takes a real leap of faith, even by Democrats, to believe in any poll financed by CBS and the New York Times. Even Pew receives more trust, and that is saying something.

WaPo and the NYT are just flaunting their little polls this morning to help their union buddies...as if the print media didn't have enough things driving away readers and advertisers, they decided to join with the unions against the taxpayers - you know, the ones who buy their papers.

Their stupidity explains why they back obama...the stupid stick together.

I just flat out don't believe it. This was skewed somehow by either biasing the questions, biasing the sample pool (most likely) or just outright fraud.

These public sector union people are just to dumb to see that a tiny concession on their part will save many of their members from being laid off indefinitely. Even the union workers in the auto industry could see that concessions were necessary to keep their jobs. I guess teachers are just not as smart as assembly line workers.

BUT Unions in general have farted and are blaming someone else...

This is obviously a deliberately inaccurate NYSlimes poll, with skewed sampling, and which flies in the face of the overwhelming political shift to conservatism that occurred at all levels of government all across the land in the election just three months ago. Nothing has changed. If anything the conservative movement has been energized by the actions of heroes like Governor Walker

How about the NYSlimes? The more the NYSlimes lies in vain attempt to credit the greedy union goons & thugs the more American people from the great middle look with disdain on the credibility of the NYSlimes, the more the NYSlimes readership continues to decline and the more revenue the NYSlimes continues to hemorrhage.

As Rush Limbaugh says: "Polls today are used to shape public opinion, not reflect it, pure and simple."

Limbaugh continues:

"'Asked how they would choose to reduce their state's deficits,' the Times adds, 'those polled preferred tax increases over benefit cuts for state workers by nearly two to one.'" Does anybody buy this? If this is the case, how in the heck did Walker win election?  How did the Republicans take over the Senate?  I mean, this is an out-and-out lie.  "How do you square these figures with the results of last November's elections, in which anti-tax, anti-deficit, anti-public-union forces swept to historic victories in federal and state elections across the country? Well, you can't, of course. The Times doesn't even ask this blindingly obvious question, let alone try to answer it. But if you read down to the seventh paragraph of the story, which is on page 17, not page 1, an answer emerges:

"'The nationwide telephone poll was conducted Feb. 24-27 with 984 adults and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for all adults. Of those surveyed, 20 percent said there was a union member in their household, and 25 percent said there was a public employee in their household.'" So, "Although less than 12 percent of the workforce is unionized today," and by the way, the private sector number is light eight.  "Although less than 12 percent of the workforce is unionized today 20 percent of the households in the survey had a union member. Although government workers are 17 percent of the workforce, 25 percent of the households surveyed had one living there.

"In other words, the sample was wildly skewed toward the very people most likely to give the answers the Times was hoping to hear," but you have to read to page 17 to get that information.  So once again proving a bone of contention: Polls today are used to shape public opinion, not reflect it, pure and simple.
