A special missile defense system deployed in IDF armored units stopped an anti-tank missile fired by terrorists near the Gaza security fence, the first time the system has been used during an IDF operation.

The IDF Spokesperson's office reported that the “Windbreaker” system managed to identify and disable the missile, and that no damage was caused to the tank or its crew. Shortly thereafter, IDF troops identified an armed man in their proximity and opened fire, killing the gunman at the scene.

Israel releases more details on IDF’s new shield (14.01.2011) The new anti-tank missile defense system, the Trophy, was recently used in a number of Armored Corps exercises. Five facts you didn’t know of the IDF's new shield: 1. The Trophy, also known as ASPRO-A or Meil Ruach in Hebrew (meaning Windbreaker) is an active protection system designed to shield light and heavy military armored vehicles against various types of anti-tank rockets and missiles (used by Hezbollah operatives in the Second Lebanon War, for example). 2. The system is comprised of three elements: threat detection and tracking, launching and, finally, interception. Sensors located on the vehicle's various surfaces enable threat detection and warning subsystems to provide full coverage of the vehicle's surroundings. Neutralizing only takes place if an incoming projectile is detected and identified as a real threat. The launching and interception functions are then activated and neutralizing agents are fired at the incoming threat. 3. Trophy is the fruit of a ten-year collaborative effort between Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aircraft Industries’ Elta Group. 4. Trophy was successfully tested on December, 2010, when an anti-tank missile was fired at a Merkava Mark 4 tank equipped with the system, the tank being operated by soldiers and the Commander of the Armored Corps' 401st Brigade himself sitting in the tank at the time. 5. The Trophy system can be put to full operational use on vehicles in motion, against short range threats, in close and urban terrain and under all weather conditions.

When you really think of it, just how bloody bright are these Palestinians in Gaza anyway? Your a Muslim with an RPG; you fire it at an Israeli tank to kill some Jews; the tank’s Trophy system detonates your AT round in flight; Israeli tankers see and kill you. Yup, that sure was smart, Mohammed.

I saw a clip where some idiot with an RPG shot at an Israeli Merkava and missed. The Merkava shot back with a 105mm HE round that took the gunner and part of the building out. Grand plan, eh?

The Iranians also have a system like this. They call it “BREAKING-WIND”. They have a bunch of Infantry sitting on the outside of the tank and boy do they break wind when they see a missile coming.

Yes, but that is obsolete falafel-based anti-missile technology. The true nature of the threat will not become clear until the Iranians can harness hummus-based measures.
