SAN MARCOS — Colby Bohannan said that when he first applied to college, his family didn't have a huge stockpile of money set aside to pay for school. He found many scholarships for women and minorities, but none aimed at people like him: white men.

"I felt excluded," said Bohannan, a Texas State University student. "If everyone else can find scholarships, why are we left out?"

So Bohannan, a mass communication major and Iraq war veteran, and others formed the Former Majority Association for Equality — a San Marcos-based nonprofit group that is offering five $500 scholarships exclusively to white male students.

I know of at least 1 other university where this has been suggested by students. I don’t think it ever was implemented.

Note that 26 U.S.C. § 170 provides a deduction, for federal income tax purposes, for donors who make charitable contributions to most types of 501(c)(3) organizations(!)

I’d really like to hear the argument against this.

I was listening to this topic on a DFW talk radio program this morning. None of the usual suspects (callers that play race card) had anything negative to say about this. One of the more mouthy usual callers even said that on a local black radio talk show, they supported this guy's actions.

I'm sure Sharpton and Jackson will see it differently.

Three cheers for the downtrodden Anglo Male Minority. A capitalist mind is a terrible thing to waste!

This is so true. Our kids all brought home from high school thick booklets filled with available scholarships. After looking through the hundreds of scholarships listed, they were very lucky if they could find even one to apply for. Nearly all of the scholarships (at least 75%) were for minorities, those with low family income, women, or indicated that a preference would be given to those who were in these categories. (In other words, you can go ahead and apply, but you will have a snowball’s chance in Hell of winning because we really aren’t interested in giving a scholarship to “your kind”.) Another major but related category was scholarships given to students who had sob stories to tell. The remaining scholarships were for the children of parents who were in certain occupations.

Ironically, the least important factor on most of these scholarship applications was academic achievement. It was more important that the students were of the right racial group, gender, or economic background. But being very social and having participated in “leadership” roles (like silly student government) was a big plus.

I suppose if you can offer scholarships to cross dressing, gender confused Eskimos then this doesn’t seem very far out of line.

It only predominantly serves to make a statement and not much more. To be considered black, one only need a fairly small percentage of black ancestry. Most people who are designated as African American have some percentage of white ancestry. Thus, most “African Americans” would be eligible for the white scholarship. The accepted trend of the label of “white” being reserved for those who are nearly pure white hampers the notion of a white scholarship and since black scholarships are not reserved for those who are “pure black”, the white scholarships must mirror them.

Also, several public historically black universities have been providing scholarships to whites under pressure to diversify but whites overwhelmingly decline to go to these universities.

Various white ethnicities do have celebratory months. Italian Americans, Irish Americans, etc. I think that they even have scholarships and stuff.

I argue against set-asides because of the harm done to everyone (lowered standards, less qualified over more qualified, etc.), as opposed to making the “flip the script” argument. If you flip the script on one thing, you must flip it on everything whereas the total history of African Americans will be assigned to white Americans and vis versa. And I disagree that there was a time when Americans were just Americans. That is why there was a civil rights movement.

I was a high school teacher for 15+ years. In my experience, the most under-represented group for scholarship money was white 18 YO males.
