In a recent column in The Shorthorn, Elizabeth Page argues that pro-life taxpayer dollars shouldnt pay for abortions. While the premise of her argument is misleading, the Hyde Amendment already bars the appropriation of federal funds to pay for abortions, shes entitled to her own opinion. What shes not entitled to, however, are her own facts.
Page states that Planned Parenthood makes millions of dollars performing abortions. Furthermore, she suggests that they are in the business of making a profit. This simply isnt the case. There are no shareholders in Planned Parenthood. Nobody gets a bonus for selling the most services.
Any excess revenue goes directly back into the organization to cover operational expenses. Meanwhile, the IRS requires that Planned Parenthood document every exchange of monies. For them to do otherwise would be to risk their status as a nonprofit organization.
Planned Parenthood is an abortion mill, asserts Page, rather pretentiously I might add. Perhaps baby grinder would have been too much. In actuality, abortion procedures account for only 3 percent of the services Planned Parenthood provides less than contraception; testing and treatment of STDs; cancer screening and prevention; and general health services, including pregnancy tests, prenatal care and infertility services. If Planned Parenthood is an abortion mill, they have a rather inefficient way of going about it.
Finally, Page makes an emotional plea: In a few years, when you walk your child to class on his or her first day of school and take a look at all the wide-eyed children smiling, think about kids who arent there because a pinhead Planned Parenthood employee convinced an ignorant woman that an abortion was the right decision.
Apparently, she has no sympathy for the young mother of modest means who, despite practicing safe sex and taking all the right precautions, ends up pregnant with her fourth child. According to Page, that mother would have to be ignorant to consider having an abortion under such difficult circumstances.
The recent demonization of Planned Parenthood coincides with the current Republican onslaught of womens reproductive rights by federal and state lawmakers. The Texas Senate just passed a measure that would require a woman to receive a sonogram before she can have an abortion. The House is likely to vote on it soon.
While it may be the case that a doctor would prefer a patient undergo a sonogram for medical reasons, that is a matter to be decided between a patient and her doctor. Forcing a doctor to perform a sonogram under penalty of law, however, is nothing more than legalized abuse with the intention of causing psychological harm to a woman already facing a tough decision.
Unfortunately, many anti-choice activists who get their information from right-wing sources are either ignorant of the facts about abortion and public policy, or are unashamed partisans who deliberately mislead the public to further their political agenda.
Oh! He means “to kill their unborn babies”.
That clarifies it.
loonie tunes: FACTS are FACTS!!
“Planned Parenthood received $349.6 million in tax dollars in the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2008, and it paid its president, Cecile Richards, $385,163, plus another $11,876 in benefits and deferred compensation.
According to a fact sheet published by the organization, Planned Parenthood Affiliate Health Centers performed 324,008 abortions in 2008.
Planned Parenthoods fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2008 is the latest year for which the organization has publicly released an annual report and published the annual sum of grants and contracts it received from the government.
In January 2009, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) introduced legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers that receive taxpayer funding. His bill, H.R. 614, would amend the Public Health Service Act to prohibit providing any federal family planning assistance to an entity unless the entity certifies that, during the period of such assistance, the entity will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs an abortion.
If one has to lie and mislead to save lives, so be it. Oskar Schindler did it to save Jews from the Nazi beasts and we call him a hero, rightfully so. If we have to lie to put a blockade in the way of the holocaust of human babies going on under the liberal SS in this country, then so be it esp. since the idea of abortion being somehow a constitutional right embedded in the founding document is itself a lie—a horrorific one that has lead to an unthinkable mass slaughter.
It’s not a rights issue. It is a moral issue.
Just another apologist for the abortion mills that thinks we have no right to question where our taxes go. He couldn’t be more wrong.
His bill, H.R. 614, would amend the Public Health Service Act to prohibit providing any federal family planning assistance to an entity unless the entity certifies that, during the period of such assistance, the entity will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs an abortion.
I see he’s been reading my posts on Free Republic.
Side note -
do not trust any man named “Jon” without the “h”.
Dear Mr. Snow—You don’t have a uterus, though I’m sure you wish you did, so stop wasting your life defending infanticide. And seeing your picture you look like gay hippy anyway, so you won’t be getting anyone pregnant anytime soon and thank goodness for that.
Am I really listening to a boy with an earring in his lower lip?
What a Snow job.
I’d like to see this SFB refute the fact that PP is a racist organization that supports Black genocide by selectively targeting minorities for abortion.
What are the "women's reproductive rights" Republicans are assailing? What are men's reproductive rights? Are the "reproductive rights" that American women have different than those American men have? Don't Americans have the same rights regardless of race creed or sex?
So government should stay out of medical decisions that should be between a patient and her doctor? But I’m sure he’s all in favor of single payer healthcare.
Mrs. Prince of Space
SO it would be ok for the Federal Government to fund the Catholic Church’s Circumcision Procedures under the same logic by the Catholic Church setting up a Circumcision Charity operating under the flag of providing men reproductive services?
Unless your name is "Kyl," without the "e."
Could be that they don’t believe their own lies anymore,
and it could be that they truly start to believe the “front” argument they’re using to keep from having to defend the indefensible truth behind their “shield” issue.
Having sex is not a right Jon. Stop putting your morality on me and using my tax dollars to do it. If you disagree go build a church, but don’t take money out of my pocket and act like I’m supposed to support it you fascist thug.
It sounds like they are making plenty of money on selling their services, so they can do fine without govt money.
Excuse me, MY money. Time for PP to live within their means.
Wow! First time I have seen the poster of an article put in a big picture of himself. It does tell me something about his personality. The Republicans’ argument is correct. I do hope this person who covers his hair knows all about Margaret Sanger.
