APNewsBreak: Wis. layoff notices coming Friday
AP ^ | 3/3/2011 | SCOTT BAUER

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said Thursday that he will issue layoff notices to 1,500 state workers on Friday if his proposal forcing them to pay more for benefits and taking away nearly all their collective bargaining rights isn't passed by then.

Walker also said in an interview with The Associated Press that he is negotiating with Democrats who stymied passage of the bill by leaving the state for changes to the proposal that would get them to return. Walker said he won't compromise on the collective bargaining issue or anything that saves the state money.

"I can't take any of that off the table," he said

(Walker’s budget proposal hinges on the state saving $330 million over two years from forcing state workers to pay more for their benefits.)

You got to love the AP and the rest of the laimstream media. How many times have I seen the words “forcing”, or “cutting”, or “slashing” when they talk about Republicans?

I agree that the Walker approach has been deliberate and consistent with midwestern values.

That said, you must admit, that if roles were reversed, the RATS would be passing every bill imaginable that the GOP would detest. Accordingly, it is past time for the GOP legislature to pass a voter Identification bill, concealed carry, and every other legislation the Left would hate.

It’s called hardball.

Pick your targets for firing carefully: Make sure to inflict the most pain on the most politically venomous lot of them.

What is your problem? For weeks those that think like u have been saying Walker and the GOP have been winning the PR war and don’t do this or don’t do that because the PR would look bad.

Some of us actually believe law and order is more important than PR. Enough of this anarchy. Bring some law and order back to your capital!

I have never said ANYTHING about PR. I don’t think Walker is necessarily winning the PR war. He is known for doing what he promised to do, and that is why he is loved and admired here.

He’s just moving forward in his own deliberate way. Nobody expects tricks, or sudden changes from Walker. Were he to start pulling stunts like that, he’d lose support fast.

Unless something unexpected happens, Walker will win this battle. I admire a man who keeps his cool under pressure.

As satisfying as that would be, it is essential that the GOP governor and legislature maintain the confidence of the voters. They have it now...they can't afford to lose it.

For that reason, they need to avoid passing controversial legislation at this point that would erode their mandate.

One the wayward Democrats return, the GOP will still have the majorities that can be used to argue for -- and pass -- the items you're suggesting. And, more importantly, they'll still have the mandate.

Would be, and in fact did on the national scene for two whole years, much to our chagrin. All the while, there was no GOP fleeing to the borders during the Nanzi/Reed(sic)/zero reign of legislative terror.

Stunts? Anarchy and chaos has been going on for weeks inside your capital and you call maintaining law and order “stunts”.

Let me make it a little more clear to you and those that think like you. What u think you are gaining in the PR war by allowing anarchy and chaos to continue will be offset by law abiding citizens scratching their heads, wondering why this chaos and dis-respect is still being allowed in a state capital.

Consider me a law and order type of personality, not a big PR type of personality. I disagree with what has been done.
And I am frankly glad to see Walker and the GOP taking a harder stance. Something I wished they had done about 5 days after this anarchy started.

Normal people, up here in Wisconsin, are very nice and patient and it takes a lot to get their noses out of joint.

I hope Walker isn’t negotiating away the best parts of the bill - the things few people have been talking about. The parts unions are so terrified of are about Wisconsin refusing to withhold union dues and the option workers would have to opt out of the union altogether.

My gut tells me that we will be disappointed in the end. Governments at all levels seem determined to push us into a Socialist Hell. I can't see a permanent turnaround towards Liberty.

Walker’s playing this just right. Had he issued the notices the day after, he would have been criticized for gaming the issue. Now it looks like he’s done everything he could to prevent this and the Democrats are going to take the fall for the lay offs. And I suspect many of those being laid off are probably going to be Democrats.

Exactly. Example: The Sandy Burglar stories were covered by the AP, but they only mentioned it two separate days; the day it was revealed, and the day he was sentenced/slapped on the hand.

They cover stories, but how they cover them is the question.

I see we are having trouble communicating. I used the word “stunts” as short hand since I was busy and needed to get to another task. In the context I used it, “stunts” meant flip-flopping on his promises. Walker will not do that. He’s holding firm to his program and letting the Dems and the protestors dig themselves a deeper hole. Now it is revealed that they have caused $7.5 million to the marble in the Capitol. People are fed up and won’t blink an eye when this scum is swept from our Capitol.

Do these brats get 99 weeks of unemployment??

Why wouldn't they?

Their retirement is paid for. Their healthcare is paid for. They're getting everything they else they want.

Depends-—id any of them are teachers who walked off the job & were protesting, they might not qualify for ‘unemployment’ benefits.

If you are fired for cause—no unemployment.

Also—the state itself has to process the ‘unemployment’ applications. If any of those laid off are also the ones who walked out of their classrooms for 3 +++ days, they could find themselves in real trouble.

It ain’t cheap to live in Wisconsin. The only thing that survives there cheaply is a mosquito.

These teachers aren't on strike - that's a violation of Wisconsin law.

These teachers are legally "sick". A judge ruled that just a few days ago.

The unions have been stacking the political deck in their favor for decades. They should have been busted years ago. But life was good and voters didn't care.

Now life is rough and voters now have to contend with all the stuff they took for granted and gave up.

I agree with you.

These people should all get kicks to the ass.

But the left runs a good portion of this country - and they take care of their friends.
