Snyder's legal costs could reach six figures, but help is already coming in (Westboro Case)
York (Pennsylvania) Daily Record ^ | March 4, 2010 | BILL LANDAUER

Posted on 03/04/2011 8:13:16 PM PST by Virginia Ridgerunner

Now that the Supreme Court has decided Westboro Baptist Church had a legal right to picket his son's funeral, Albert Snyder has to reimburse Westboro for at least some of its legal costs.

The bill, which covers things like Westboro Baptist's costs for making photocopies, could balloon to more than six figures.

At the moment, Snyder owes $16,510.80 for the costs of appealing the case to the Fourth Circuit court of appeals. Attorneys for Westboro have filed for additional costs from the 2007 trial in U.S. District Court in Maryland. Those costs are about $100,000, Snyder's attorney, Sean Summers, said during a news conference Wednesday.

(snip)

Additionally, host of Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor," Bill O'Reilly, has offered to pay Snyder's legal costs. A Fox News spokeswoman said O'Reilly will pay the fees out of his own pocket. O'Reilly had previously said he'd pay the $16,500 incurred during district court trial, so it was unclear whether he'd pay more.

Generally, I detest BOR. But it appears that he's stepping up and doing something good to help Snyder pay this legal bill.

I don’t understand this case.

What does the 1st Amendment have to do with a civil suit? Was somebody trying to get Congress to enact a law that limited free speech? What was the tack of the complaint.

In America you can sue anyone for anything. I’d say the WBC was liable for causing pain and suffering and guilty of harassment of the family.

This is how Westboro makes money. They are all lawyers, so they defend themselves (I guess), and between suing poeple who attack them, or getting attorney fees in this case, they can pay for their left-wing attacks on our servicemen and women.

I do not know why people are not fighting back to this bunch of scum. Find out who the members of the church are and then protest in front of their homes, their places of employment, where they shop, etc. Create noise in their neighborhoods at 3:00 in the morning. When they have church services (if they do) picket the building making so much noise they cannot hear themselves think. Follow them when they go shopping and picket the store. Do the same thing to them they do to the families.

Refuse to pay those ba$tards a dime. Dance and celebrate at his kids funeral? If anyone ever comes to execute legal papers, evictions, etc for it,,, a fully armed citizen militia needs to be there to meet them.

You have to pay or the Sheriff shows up.

It’s odd that Sarah Palin can raise a million dollars an hour for something, yet this brave family, that had their son killed, and fought a court battle many supported, has to go broke? What’s wrong with that???

I think O’Reilly was very clear that he would pay the entire bill. Good for him.

Anther victim of the evil Federal employee in black robe invented incorporation doctrine.

I’d love to go back in time 150 years to show the careless drafters of the 14th amendment just how their carelessness would be used.

Correct - there really is no church involved.

These so-called members of the Westboro Baptist Church do these demonstrations only as an opportunistic method to instigate lawsuits. As long as there is a big payday they will continue to ‘protest’.

The gays have figured it out.

Everyone else finds it so infuriating, they can’t help themselves, and respond with a personal attack. Big mistake! Ignore the “protesters”. When this “congregation” of lawyers finds they can no longer earn lots of money suckering people, they will cease.

If it was me, I would offer to repay the act by dancing and celebrating at their funerals - next week.
