Homeland Security Delays Launch of 'Real ID' – Again

States facing a federal deadline in May to launch a controversial program to tighten security requirements for driver's licenses got another reprieve Friday when the Department of Homeland Security delayed for the third time enactment of the 2005 law by 21 months to January 2013.

Homeland Security officials said the deadline was extended because most states would not be able to meet all the federal requirements of the so-called Real ID Act by May 11, partly because of the economic downturn and uncertainty about congressional action on a proposal to modify the law.

No ID will be required to vote though, will it?

Well, we "poor States" will go ahead and do what we can; for the 2012 Election, we'll just ask for Photo ID at EVERY POLLING PLACE, especially in the INNER CITIES, and Southwest States.

This law was passed in 2005 in response to 9/11, some four years prior, and it’s so important that they are putting it off to 2013, some 12 years past 9/11.

Sounds pretty series to me.

You pegged that one. I’m thinking that by 2013 DHS probably figures they will be able to make us take the chip. Now thats REAL ID.!

Nearly half of all states, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Washington, have all passed legislation opposing Real ID with 18 others having similar plans.

When maybe eight states are working to comply, you can't blame Homeland Security for the delay.

I do not comprehend the paranoid foolishness behind states refusing to create their driver licenses and state ID cards to meet rather minimal universal guidelines for security and reliability.

The database portion may be a sticky question but the minimum standards for an ID are not. Some licenses are barely paper cards with carnival photo-booth-snappy supplied pictures laminated to them. They're a joke.

I'm amazed so many of the same people who want voters to show ID are opposed to effort to make those very IDs minimally secure and dependable.

I don’t disagree with you, but given the magnitude of 911, it should have been passed bfore the end of 2001, not 2005.

This is not about showing an id so the voting process is safer. This is a global push to make EVERYONE in the world have a national id. When implemented you have to carry card at all times.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be reduced to a barcode kept in a national database filled with personal information that would without a doubt leak into a huge array of government surveillance activities. Aren’t we tracked more than enough as it is?

You got that right. We are rabidly opposed to the REAL ID act and it has not been implemented in GA. Its none. of the govts business where we go or what we do as long as we don’t break the law.

My position is that we already have a National ID card and that is the Social Security card. We don’t need some new card with a tracking chip implanted in it. By the way if we do get forced into a REAL ID card just make sure you put it in the microwave for 15 seconds as soon as you get it. That will disable the tracking chip. Same with your passport. All the new passports have a chip.
