At a hearing of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee today examining job loss in the manufacturing industry, U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) pressed U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on the critical imperative to assess the adverse affects of proposed rules on the paper industry. Senator Snowe, who asserted the paper industry is a cornerstone of America's manufacturing sector, insisted the Department do a better job of understanding the implications of proposed regulations on job creation.

For Big Government Jobs' Creation is A WAITING GAME BASED ON EXPERT OPINIONS:

Just Listen to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Gary Locke response to his failure to release the Boiler-mact report which had been requested back in December.

Lockes' response on the basic of new rules by EPA.. "rules ...and how "agencies listen".

"Benign neglect" to act says Snowe on the importance of this industry and 7,000 jobs left hanging in ME and 900,000 workers across the country.

2.1 billion dollars to effect the paper/pulp industry with the New revised Boiler-MACT rule. It places us in a disadvantage from foreign companies overseas, in particular, China.

Snowe says we are "always putting the cart before the horse" and should know the burden being placed on the industry when in rule making. Costs must be anticipated and put into the business plan-a ripple effect. The paper industry is a cornerstone of American industry.

Comments from the private sector, the courts to the EPA changes the rules says Sec. Locke.

During the rules’ mandatory comment period, the EPA received a wealth of studies and "expert" opinions explaining the harm boiler-MACT would cause. The Agency intentionally delayed the rulemaking process on SEVERAL occasions to find some way of WHAT THEY SAY was ameliorating the regulation’s worst effects. BIG GREEN, however, would have none of it. The EPA’s most recent attempt to push back the due date for boiler-MACT was rebuffed by a court order in favor of the SIERRA CLUB .

The Council of Industrial Boiler Owners (Industrial, commercial an institutional) released a study last year saying“every billion dollars spent on MACT upgrade and compliance costs will put 16,000 jobs at risk and reduce US GDP by as much as $1.2 billion.”

This is more important an issue than your opinion on Snowe. I was hoping we could discuss the issue. Bet you did not even take the time to read--typical fly through focus and post.

“.....the paper industry is a cornerstone of America’s manufacturing sector”.

Snow, you are an idiot and your days (as a politician) are numbered.

I don’t care what the issue is, I will always disagree with the useless bug.

Even the lobsters should be embarrassed of this twit.

Too right about posting. The paper industry has been in decline for over 30 years. I did a search but could not find a recently built mill, there is one proposed for NY, but it is still not even on the “funded” for development board. Most storeis about mills are about what will soon be torn down. High quality paper was coming from Finland and other old world countries - their quality is said to be way beyond what we have...why?

Snowe is to be commended on this one.

This could be devastating to Maine, as if the state has any wiggle room if what's left of the paper industry tanks because of this edict.

It's been my experience that the dog-and-pony show of "public input" put on by behemoth agencies is just a pro-forma step they take before ramming their rule down the throats of their victims.

You disagree with a balanced budget? Just kidding, there has to one thing you and Collins think about the same. She is favor of good weather, you know.

Same reason no nuclear power plants, refineries, or other manfacturing facilities. Too much regulation. Cheaper to just go away and give the jobs to someone else. How about the granolas thinking globally for just once?

Was it Snowe's former husband who helped Paul LePage as a youth, or Collins? Whoever it was, LePage said he's backing her when she runs. The husband went to bat for him when all others had given up on him and got him into college.

LePage, as a Waterville kid, probably grew up in the hey day of the Waterville/Winslow mills.

There is a mill near Skowhegan still running. I could see the steam from stacks from 40 miles away on the hills near where I lived.

I hate to see anyhing damage them like this. There's not much there anymore.

Good for her that's she's battling for them.

This just in:

Maine Paper Mills Closed.

Well by golly, not only is Olympia cute as a bug, she's smart as a whip, too. Imagine discovering that our paper industry is on the rocks in the Year of Our Lord 2011? Trust Olympia to ferret out the latest scoop on just about anything.

The last job left in many a Maine hamlet (former town) is the geezer who goes to the old mill once a week and gives the roller a 1/4 turn, "so's she don't take a set."

LePage wants to save old Maine, eh? Well let him take every god-cursed sodomite from away that Baldacci put on the state payroll out to sea and leave'it there. BTW, is Baldacci back working at the retaurant?

Please God, LePage ain't a RINO. Amen.

Don’t worry Fed Chair bernanke will drive up the demand for paper as he prints more and more dollars. :)

Oh wait, they use cotton to make dollars. Good for Southern states. Sorry Sen. Snowe, sucks to be you. ;)

She is one half of the Maine Dumb and Dumber senator couple. Remember when the other one voted to bring Health Care out of committee because she was part of a historic moment. And they always like to be bipartisand and compromise. Lets see how far that gets the knucklehead.

How come no one ever asks about Mr. Snowe? Mr. Collins? Mr. Boxer? Mr. Feinstein?

If one were to be so crass as to add it up, we're talking about $200 million or so off the various tables these boys get invited to. Throw in Mr. Pelosi, and you might get to a billion!

Harry Reid net worth in first year: $50 bucks and a cheap suit. Well he's still got the suit, and an extra $100 million in the bank. Thrifty guy!
