Gay legislators having impact in marriage debates

Of America’s 7,382 state legislators, only 85 are openly gay or lesbian. They are, however, playing an outsized and often impassioned role when the agenda turns to recognizing same-sex couples with civil unions or full marriage rights.

In Hawaii and Illinois, gay state representatives were lead sponsors of civil union bills signed into law earlier this year. In Maryland and Rhode Island, gay lawmakers are co-sponsoring pending bills that would legalize same-sex marriage. In New York, gay state Sen. Tom Duane is preparing to be lead sponsor of a marriage bill in his chamber later this session.

“For my colleagues, knowing that I am not allowed to marry the person that I love and want to marry, that’s very powerful,” said Mr. Duane, Manhattan Democrat. “It’s more difficult for them to take for granted the right they have to marry when I don’t have it.”

The gay lawmakers have impact in two important ways. Their speeches, often evoking personal themes, sometimes can sway wavering colleagues, and they can forge collegial relationships even with ideological foes through day-to-day professional and social interaction.

State Rep. Deborah Mell, Chicago Democrat, who was elected to the Illinois House in 2008, made a point of bringing her partner to legislative functions and a year ago announced their engagement on the House floor.

The fiance, Christin Baker, was on hand when Ms. Mell gave an emotional speech Nov. 30 during the civil union debate. One of Ms. Mell’s points: Current law would bar doctors from consulting her if Ms. Baker, her partner for more than seven years, became seriously ill.

“The more visible we are, the better,” Ms. Mell said in a telephone interview. “When you look someone in the eyes, it’s a little harder for them to deny that we should have the same rights.”

I just don’t understands this country’s fixation on and adoration of sexual deviants. It’s really too weird for me.

Part of it is the whole “sexual revolution” which started in the ‘60s. Things which were once considered not normal or deviant are now considered just another type of expression in that area.

Part of it is political correctness. Politically correct thought processes do not allow people to make critical judgements about various subjects.

Part of it is how the left frames debates. If you oppose same-sex marriage you must hate homosexuals. If you oppose affirmative action, you must be a racist. If you oppose abortion on demand as defined by Roe vs. Wade, you are anti-woman, and/or would prefer to see a woman impaled on a coat hanger. Again, critical thinking is not allowed when debates are framed this way.

Why are our legislators caving in to such a tiny minority?

The dictatorship of the minority?

Have they decided yet which one will change their name like the man-woman marriage?

Indifference, an obsession with amusement and other pleasures, total devotion to frivolous beings such as Charlie Sheen, Oprah and Obama. Fanatical egalitarianism leading to the acceptance of peoples from other civilizations who harm us. Due to the worship and practice of vice we are led to the love of death both individual and collective. Those are some of the things leading us to final extinction as a people.

Even in San Francisco the amount of out homosexuals is what, ten percent? Yet they run the town. It seems to be a feature of homosexuality. Perhaps one reason who God condemns its practice so emphatically.

Have either of you called AND written to your legislators about this matter? If you refuse to show up for the the fight - you lose.

“When you look someone in the eyes, it’s a little harder for them to deny that we should have the same rights.”

Not for me, because I understand that NO ONE has a RIGHT to marry. Society sets norms all the time for marriage; degrees of relation, bigamy, polygamy, etc. If society changes those norms to allow ONE of those to change, there is no standing against any of the others.

The proponents of homosexual marriage should be asked, on the record, if they think those other norms should be changed if homosexual marriage is allowed. Having their answers on record will let everyone know just how much 'in esteem' they actually hold the institution of marriage.

Look up Sheila Kuehl. She was Zelda Gilroy in the old Dobie Gillis TV show. She was really big on pushing the gay/lesbian agenda in California when she was a state legislator. To Leftists, every minority should have a louder voice than the majority. Didn’t Holder say that whites haven’t suffered enough? I’m sure he meant straight, Conservative whites who play by the rules and expect the same of everyone else. Whites who are of some sort of minority (gay mainly) have suffered, so Holder will protect them against the mean, Conservative whites, too.

It doesn’t take a “gay” legislator to push the envelope of perversion. Homosexuality is just one branch of nihilist sexual libertinism (perversion) that all leftists want imposed. You know them from the 60’s, in the “Woodstock” settings and in Haight-Ashbury-type districts. They are from the same corrupt root.

That’s why you should have a state amendment banning it like in Ohio...

I just don’t understands this country’s fixation on and adoration of sexual deviants.

From their perspective, these law abiding Americans simply want to avail themselves of a gov't program of privileges and responsibilities that other couples can.

Once civil gov't got into the "marriage" business all bets were off. This debate was inevitable. The quaint notion of "sexual deviants" was buried by SCOTUS with its 6-3 vote in Lawrence v Texas (re: sodomy laws) and no federal marriage amendment materialized during the Bush years when he was talking about it.

Obama's refusing to defend DOMA following the lead of crooked governors and attorneys general in CA who refuse to defend voters own state constitutional amendment on this issue. Even having a parallel system of "domestic partnership" wasn't enough for the federal or state courts.

The writing is on the wall but, whether you support the final outcome or abhor, it all sides should be gravely concerned without how it's all come about: ramrodded through by a cabal of scofflaw executives and judicial activists, not by direct or representative democracy.

Far too many sex pervert legislators; oh, and too many pervert teachers, government workers of any kind, ministers, actors, and most of all, "journalists". Since homosexuals are less than 2% of the population, and are mentally ill into the bargain, they should be ashamed of their perversion and seek help, not force the entire culture to change to suit their sickness. It's really getting way past time for people to fight back by "speaking truth to power"!

homosexuals are about one thing, getting off and teaching their sickness as normal.

People for the most part shut up out of cowardliness and it is high time that those cowards understood people gave their lives to give us this great nation and yet they’re too much of a coward to speak up about what is right and real normal healthy marriage/family.

here in Colorado they are attempting —with lots of help from the Democrats and other deceived folk in their supine and subservient pose—to push through SB172 which would grant State recognition to civil unions —a slap in the face of the people in this State that REJECTED civil unions(Ref.I) when we also elevated DOMA to State Constitutional status.
And today on the Blaze I hear the Ruler of Sodom -the 0 itself has petitioned the UN to do more to embrace the Sodomites world wide and love and protect the immoral fornicators.
