Democrats to End Union Standoff

MARCH 7, 2011 Democrats to End Union Standoff

By KRIS MAHER And AMY MERRICK

Playing a game of political chicken, Democratic senators who fled Wisconsin to stymie restrictions on public-employee unions said Sunday they planned to come back from exile soon, betting that even though their return will allow the bill to pass, the curbs are so unpopular they'll taint the state's Republican governor and legislators.

The Wisconsin standoff, which drew thousands of demonstrators to occupy the capitol in Madison for days at a time, has come to highlight efforts in other states to address budget problems in part by limiting the powers and benefits accorded public-sector unions.

Sen. Mark Miller said he and his fellow Democrats intend to let the full Senate vote on Gov. Scott Walker's "budget-repair" bill, which includes the proposed limits on public unions' collective-bargaining rights. The bill, which had been blocked because the missing Democrats were needed for the Senate to have enough members present to vote on the bill, is expected to pass the Republican-controlled chamber.

He said he thinks recent polls showing voter discontent with Mr. Walker over limits on bargaining rights have been "disastrous" for the governor and Republicans and give Democrats more leverage to seek changes in a broader two-year budget bill Mr. Walker proposed Tuesday.

These people are delusional. The voters threw out the Democrats and their running dog lackeys barely 4 months ago ~ and they knew what they were doing.

The voters are hardly likely to turn around and now embrace the Democrats just because the state employees are getting their benefits cut.

It’s a great Rope-A-Dope play against the Flee Party dems. If they actually believe these craptastic polls they’re morons (or “morans” as the DUmmies prefer to say) - and if they really think this is “disastrous” they’ll keep acting cocky and do even more stupid things that will hurt themselves even more.

I can see it now. “FOX News Alert!” Cut to the 14 marching arm-in-arm to the steps of the Capitol singing “We Shall Overcome” or “Kumbaya” or “Imagine”. I wonder if the Justice Brothers will be in attendance?

The crowd should drown them out by pointing at them and singing “Pants on the Ground”.

It will be interesting to see if the state will start denying the school districts funding to cover these sweetheart deals that have been made with the unions by the school boards.

Or maybe that is the plan the unions are counting on.......

I doubt it’s true our AWOL WI state senators will return from their out of state hiding places.

If they think enacting Gov. Walker’s needed reforms and cuts in spending will give the Democrats victories in 11/12, they are going to be disappointed. The cuts will bring a better economic recovery to WI and getting the public employee’s unions hands off the necks of we taxpayers will give good results that win the GOP votes, not take away votes.

We better put the cuffs on the first Dem senator crossing back over the IL border and take him to the senate floor as we can’t trust these weasels.

Well, to me, it seems that these local boards have superceded the state. At some point, even they will run out of money, and then it will be up to each school to fund their teachers and their outsized pensions. Once that money dries up, it will be a door-to-door/neighborhood shakedown.

I think we’re about two years away from that happening.

You broke the code, Frantzie.

The delay allowed all of the side deals with the individual towns and school districts to get negotiated. Now when the state cuts the aid to those towns, they will cry like stuck pigs, stuck with union gold plated contracts that will cause property taxes to soar.

Efforts need to be made to go after these 14 in recalls. If they pull this again the senate majority leader needs to declare their seats vacant, and have the governor immediately write up writs for special election.

The plan was to give school districts the ability to more than offset the coming state education cuts by getting rid of the collective bargaining agreement, except for the salary negotiation. Local boards can then, if they decide, to adjust the benefits and such so that the funding decrease from the state won’t hurt them if they don’t want to raise taxes or borrow.

They can send out warrants and fine them $100.00, like they have.

Truth be told the GOP senate could expel them from the senate if they wanted to!

They can according to Senate rules.

Is this true? Are these guys coming back?

I’m in Milwaukee and not seeing anything about this on the local news websites tonight. You read the WSJ byline for a March 7th story and wonder if they have scooped the locals?

Or is the WSJ simply taking some comments and making their own conclusion that these legislators will stay out?

I figured these guys would remain out-state for months.

Senate orders arrest of missing Democrats

Senate Republicans Thursday ordered the forcible detention of their 14 Democratic colleagues, who fled the state two weeks ago to avoid a vote on Gov. Scott Walker’s controversial budget repair bill...

...[Attorney] Troupis insisted the detention is not an arrest because the senators are not suspected of any crimes. Rather, he said, the resolution seeks to enforce a legislative process.

Longtime Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, said it was “below the dignity of the state Senate to be spending its time passing such resolutions.”

Some police - many of whom have marched alongside protesters against Walker’s plan to effectively end collective bargaining for public workers - have already objected to the arrest resolution.

Yeah, that’s the prevailing FR opinion which I’ve not seen elsewhere.

Speaking of journalism, it would be cool to have a FR News Journal operated as an arm of FR (presumably a Robinson operation). The journal would include news, editorial, opinion, and satire. It could live in the commercial space and include an advertising revenue model. I’m sure it would do well and wouldn’t interfere with the practice and spirit of FR.

But, that’s just me, LOL!

This was done to buy time so local unions could get their hooks into towns and munis for more benefits and lock them in before the budget passes. The ‘Rats have been beaten.

Don’t believe anything you read about polls showing Governor Walker is losing support.

Cowardly rats say they are coming back. We’ll see! They change their mind alot, think the public sentiment is on their side. We’ll see how well received the cowards are when they slink back into their seats in the Capitol.

It’s like when my daughter was about three, would have a tantrum and go to her room ..and then try to figure out how to emerge from the cave while saving some sort of face!
She’d say, “I’ll stop if you open the door”. I’d say, “No, you stop crying and I’ll open the door”.
STANDOFF!
Can’t remember who won the battle. It was probably her, by having more resolve!
But with this situation in Madison, I see no way that the Fleebaggers look good or “win”! They had the tantrums, made fools of themselves and now have to accept the consequences of their immature choices!
Parade them in front of the masses to be mocked! :-)
When pigs fly..but seriously.
If anyone should be yelling “shame, shame”, it should be us at them!
