Police Saturday night arrested a suspected dog fighting ring being held in a garage on Ida-Maybee Rd., a high-dollar and bloody operation that attracted participants from various states. Up to 28 people were arrested and two of the five dogs seized are severely injured and might have to be put down.
"It was brutal," said Detective Sgt. Heath Velliquette of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. "There was blood everywhere."
Members of county's Special Response Team raided the garage about 10 p.m. just after a fight between two dogs had ended. Sgt. Velliquette said people scattered when the raid was announced but everyone, he said, was rounded up and booked.
One handgun and $40,000 in cash were confiscated. Along with the five dogs, training equipment also was seized. The operation was being held in a two-car garage in the house north of M-50 in Raisinville Township.
A full-sized dog fighting ring had been constructed inside the garage and participants stood around to watch. "It was a true pit," Sgt. Velliquette said. "You barely had enough room to stand around it."
Sheriff's deputies and the SRT team acted on a tip received from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Details of who was running the illegal operation have not been released and are still being investigated. Of those taken into custody Saturday night, many were from other states, including Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Georgia. Some were from Detroit also.
They used the canine unit to chase down the escapees (human, not canine)
The animals behind the garage in the woods were so hungry they were eating dirt.
Feed the animals (the so called people) to the Viking Kitties
Let hope no NFL players are connected to this.
Shoot the humans.
Sometimes it is possible to rehabilitate abused animals. Shelters often employ behaviorists to assess and if the animals are good candidates, they will try to rehabilitate. But it will probably be difficult to find good homes for the dogs since many people would be wary of them if they know the dogs’ history.
A friend’s sister adopted a pit bull puppy which was being trained for fighting when he was rescued. Perhaps it’s because the pup wasn’t abused as long as the adult dogs and I don’t think he would have been fighting at a young age, but this little guy has turned out to be a wonderful, gentle and loving pet.
that’s what makes me so sad about these kind of story. There is never a happy ending for these animals they have to be put down.
Shooting is too good for the animals who did this.
very sad and so close to home.
The Roman Emperors used the coliseum to first pit animals against animals for the entertainment of Rome. The MMA type fights pollute the Martial Arts for the sake of the bloodlust of the crowd. Unwanted babies in Rome were killed. “Hail Ceasar! We who are about to die salute you!” We have become a nation of barbarians.
You are so right. I’m with you on this. I’d have no qualms about shootin’ those vermin that do this against ANY animal!
To the contrary, we have become something quite worse. Like Rome, our success and preeminence has given us a sense of superiority. Rather than maintaining a sense of gratitude for our many blessings, whe have developed a sense of entitlement to more and more. When individuals adopt such an egocentric worldview, the lives of other creatures, and indeed humans, exist merely to serve and amuse.
