Is there any sadder testament to the fading magic of Hopenchange than this? Reading it, I actually felt sorry for the guy.
Any high school principals out there in the HA audience have time to throw together an application and reassure The One that kids still love him? And by “love him,” I mean “will happily sit through a speech/photo op in lieu of having to go to class.”
The competition was extended from the February 25 deadline until Friday, March 11 after few schools met the original application deadline. CBS News has learned a White House Communications Office internal memo dated February 22 noted “a major issue with the Commencement Challenge.”
“As of yesterday we had received 14 applications and the deadline is Friday,” the memo said. The memo also urged recipients to, “please keep the application number close hold.”
A follow-up memo on February 28 reported receipt of 68 applications. Noting the competition among more than 1,000 schools last year, the memo said, “Something isn’t working.” It called on staffers to ask “friendly congressional, gubernatorial and mayoral offices” to encourage schools to apply.
“We should also make sure the Cabinet is pushing the competition out to their lists,” the memo said. The note reiterated, “We do not want the actual application number out there (we didn’t release the number of applications we received last year until after the submission period)-so folks should not use it in their pitches.”

My daughter graduates from our home school this May.
I would be happy to have him visit for the meal and celebration, as long as I get to do all of the talking and ask all of the questions.
We have to assume that kids who ACTUALLY DO graduate, know how to read and write.... SOOOOO it goes without saying that THEY don’t want to hear “O”?
Then, the kids who do not graduate aren’t there to ask him to speak!!!

I think they structured it all wrong.
The contest should have been to say 0bama would speak at ALL High Schools thru-out the US. Then, each high school would be invited to submit an essay as to why 0bama should NOT come to their school. There will be a FLOOD of entries, and the top 27467 essays get to have him NOT speak at their ceremony. The unlucky 27468'th school... will have to bear it.

Why is this an issue? He won’t be going to 68 schools or 1000.
He probably planned on one school, so he can pick from the 68 that entered. or pick two.

Actually, most schools probably don't want the hassle of it all--the over-zealous security and the arrogant leader upstaging the event, which is supposed to be about the kids' achievement, not the "ONE". Can you imagine how many times Obamalamadingdong uses the word "I" in a commencement speech? Sheesh...what a beating that speech would be to sit through.
Lots of schools are having to make unpopular budget cuts, and dragging in the most polarizing president in history to upstage their kids' graduation probably doesn't win too much support with the local taxpayers.
Besides, everyone knows he's just going to leave early to go play golf.

This may be a silly idea, but isn’t it a better idea for schools to . . . wait for this . . . teach . . . than to sit around in an auditorium listening to an anti-American socialist boast about how wonderfully he has turned what would have been a brief and minor recession with a risk of 8% unemployment into an extended depression in which 8% unemployment would be considered a recovery? This White House failure gives me a little hope for our schools.

Here is an interesting anecdote. My kid is a young swimmer and gets the monthly USA swim magazine. They do short interviews with young swimmers across the country. One of the questions invariably asked is “Name a famous person you would like to meet”. Without fail the young kids would answer Obama. I used to grind my teeth. I haven’t seen one kid say that in over a year.

‘Cause everyone assumed that he’d already be tied up? There are plenty of leftist school administrations that would love to have him; now that the word’s out, he’ll probably be flooded with requests.

I think you’re on to something. There is nothing more boring than a political speaker at a graduation, IMHO. The kids want it to be Their graduation. Besides, there really are typically plenty of hassles in getting to the graduation venue, parking, seating (tickets required), etc. Sometimes outdoor graduations get pretty hot, too, in addition to being long.
Personally, I think the one really important thing a graduation should never be without is an expression of gratitude for the parents, faculty and staff who persevered with the students the whole way through. That, and passing out diplomas and taking pictures, should pretty much cover it.
