The exact number depends on whether public workers' unions make last-minute concessions... Three of Camden's past seven mayors have been sent to prison for corruption, including one who was convicted while he was still running the city. |

11/30/2010 5:10:53 PM PST · by Kid Shelleen · 40 replies Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 11/30/2010 | Matt KatzCamden will lay off nearly half of its police officers and a third of its firefighters while eliminating positions in every city office, according to a layoff plan approved Tuesday by the state. The 383 total layoffs represent about a quarter of the city's work force, and touch all corners of city government, from 15 positions in the municipal court to 20 police dispatchers. |
Sounds like they need to loosen up the gun laws.
"They love seeing a 40-year-old cop get out of that car instead of a 24-year-old guy who can actually chase them down," an unnamed police officer told the Times, referring to criminals.
And residents are wasting their time, sources say, if they report nonviolent serious crimes. "If you're not shot or murdered, or if it does not involve a drug gang, it's not going to be investigated," another anonymous cop told the Times. An anti-crime group called The Guardian Angels volunteered to patrol the streets after January's layoffs.
Camden Mayor Dana Redd said 100 police officers could have kept their jobs if they took a 20 percent wage cut. The officers instead agreed to a wage freeze and unpaid leave days, which was rejected. Sixty-seven firefighters and 100 clerks were also axed in an attempt to close the city's $26.5 million deficit, according to the Star-Ledger. The Camden public library was shut down as well.
Camden is one of the nation's most impoverished and crime-ridden cities, though a drop in the murder rate in 2009 and 2010 raised hopes among residents that the tide could be turning.
I’ll wager that this city has been run by Democrats for many years. Just a “wild guess” on my part.
They cut polioce officers, but I bet not a single position got cut in City Hall where I’m sure the lowest bureaucrat makes more than a police officer.
Just a few bad guys can make life depressing. Welcome to East St Louis or Oakland or some other s***hole..
Police don’t prevent crime. They conduct investigations.
Just tell the libs to make more “CO-EXIST” stickers and PEACE SIGNS..and it’ll all work out.
Funny way of putting it since Camden is supposedly has the worst crime rate of any city of its size. Now they’re saying it’s worse???
Burn a cross in front of city hall and the dunderhead obuma will send 1,000 FBI agents to walk around and eat doughnuts. Tack up pictures of Robert Byrd on telephone poles.
Camden is a hell hole. Urban slum, almost all of it. And it has been, for as long as I can remember.
Time to assemble a well-armed local militia, and take care of the neighborhood. Likewise, keep the Lawyers out of Camden, and the streets would be clear of thugs, too. NO PLEA BARGAINS.
See the Liberal plan for making taxpayers “pay” for not increasing taxes in action. Cut essential services like police and schools. Wait for crime to go up and blackmail the public into paying more. Government reminds me of a feudal system protection racket more and more every day.
Certainly if a white Tea Party member with a Gadsden bumper sticker were to be picked up for conceal carry without Big Brother approval, he’d be hauled in and serve hard time.
Well gee, maybe if you had not pissed money away you would not be dealing with this problem...
Can’t be too bad, picture at link shows a whole bunch of nice boots just sitting there that nobody stole.

Look for the Union label.
If we were to be very cynical, we could ask all the laid off cops: Where were you on the night of __________ between ________ and _____________ (given that the public service unions are becoming more thugish every day.)
But, I won’t seriously go there.
