Savvy shoppers who cook from scratch are going to get out of this much easier.

I have noticed that prices have risen more for name brand, convenience, and higher end items than the basics. I can still get a can of store brand tuna for $.65. Name brands I can’t get for less than $.75 on major sale, they are now just over a dollar. One local store has a “dinner for two” special in the pre-made food section that saw a 13% increase, but the milk prices haven’t changed yet.

Kale is still cheap, onions rose a while ago, but I haven’t seen a new price rise lately. Certain vegetables that got hit this winter are higher and the bag o’ salads are ridiculous, but a lot of the basic root vegetables aren’t rising yet.

Since the actual dollar food content in the value added items is much less than in the "scratch" items one would expect those prices increases to be less if this were driven by food commodity costs. That would seem to indicate that this is a demand driven price increase instead of a cost side increase.

The BIGGEST rip off is Nino salvaggio’s in my opinion, as well as many others. Their milk is always expired as well as much of the other items in the 2 stores in MI. I heard they pay the employees almost nothing and the Salvaggio family was going broke.

For example I bought a jar of salsa at Nino salvaggio’s for $3.49. The same jar of salsa at Walmart was 2.49. Big, big difference. I’d also like to mention that Nino Salvaggio’s is on the same level as Walmart. They are both non-union and the workers are cut from the same cloth.

I wonder if the owners of the Nino salvaggio market feel the need to jack up their prices so they can pocket the dough. Nothing like sticking it to the consumer.
