The salad bowl analogy means that some of us are lettuce, some are tomatoes, some are broccoli, some are radishes, some are croutons, etc. [and now, increasingly, some of us are maggots] meaning that there is no unified American culture anymore.

I always thought the "melting pot" was the perfect analogy. For those in Rio Vista and Detroit, it reminds us that the product of the contemporary melting pot could produce alloys which are stronger, infinitely more useful and versatile than its constituent parts.

If the political leadership had a clue about what they were doing.

I like the melting pot because it reminds me of chocolate fondue. Fondue. So quaint.+
