Sheriff With CAIR Ties Defends Muslims At Hearing (Baca, LA Co)
Judicial Watch ^ | March 10, 2011

The only law enforcement official to testify at today’s congressional hearing on Muslim radicalization is tight with an Islamic group that raises money for Hamas and was a co-conspirator in a federal terror-finance trial.

Predictably, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca advocated on behalf of Muslims at the highly-publicized hearing, conducted by the House Committee on Homeland Security. Not surprising considering Baca, elected to run the nation’s largest sheriff’s department, regularly attends fundraisers for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to meet the goals of his agency’s Muslim Community Affairs Division.

First elected in 1999, Baca joined forces with CAIR to stay on “positive terms” with the Muslim community after the 9/11 attacks. Never mind that the group was founded in 1994 by three Middle Eastern extremists (Omar Ahmad, Nihad Awad and Rafeeq Jaber) who ran the American propaganda wing of Hamas, known then as the Islamic Association for Palestine. CAIR has extensive links to foreign and domestic Islamists, was a co-conspirator in a federal terror-finance case involving the Hamas front group Holy Land Foundation and is largely funded by Islamic terrorist-supporting countries.

It may seem odd for a top U.S. law enforcement official to have such a cozy relationship with this sort of group. Then again Baca is also tight with L.A. poker clubs, though his department is responsible for enforcing gambling laws. The lucrative casinos make generous political contributions to the sheriff, shower him with expensive gifts and give handsomely to his youth charity.

Now back to the sheriff’s testimony at the Muslim radicalization hearing. The Homeland Security committee’s top Democrat (Mississippi’s Bennie Thompson) invited Baca to advocate on behalf of maligned Islamists worldwide and the sheriff stepped up to the plate. He assured that all terrorists are not Muslim and warned that radicalization is an issue that affects all groups regardless of religion.

Baca took the opportunity to “deliver very good news,” about the Muslim community in Los Angeles; that it’s an “active participant in the securing of our homeland.” Taxpayers in the sprawling county of about 10 million should also take note that to “further solidify international relationships,” members of the sheriff’s department have embarked on “professional diplomacy efforts” to Pakistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Jordan, Armenia, Russia and Morocco among others. Baca didn’t offer any examples of how the costly trips abroad have helped keep his county safe.

The good sheriff did take the opportunity to do a bit of cheerleading for President Obama, who has conducted a series of aggressive Muslim outreach efforts since moving into the White House. “At this time in our history, with billions of dollars being spent on wars against terror, our nation should follow President Obama's example and serve as instruments of goodwill to Muslims throughout the world,” Baca said. Rah! Rah!

So much for the boisterous accusations from the politically-correct left that the hearing ( “The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community's Response.” ) amounts to modern-day McCarthyism.

Rep. King had better get some people in front of the committee that know what they're talking about, this is sounding like a whitewash.

I attended a gang training wherein Sheriff Baca spoke. He was dead-on, spot-on, and hard-core pro-LEO.

I am deeply saddened by this story. Damn it.

That’s my sheriff. Never mind his testimony; why is he spending (I presume) my county’s dollars to travel to DC just to testify at a hearing about Muslim extremism? For or against it (the hearing), why couldn’t he have submitted a written or videotaped statement?

How much did it cost county taxpayers like me to pay for this guy’s entourage to travel to and from DC?

I called a talkshow about our mutual worries. The host, Conservative, talkshow trailblazer, Avi Nelson, did not particularly like my fears about how the hearings would turn out.

I'll try post my talk with Avi Nelson -- which I recorded -- on youtube over the weekend.

p.s. I don't particularly like the term, McCarthyism. It is just a word invented by the major Communist newspaper (then, the 'Daily Worker," now, called the "Daily World") in America to smear Sen. McCarthy.

It's a Soviet technique (and an Alyinsky technique) to concentrate basically on personal attacks and not all of them accurate.

Poorly written sentence. It makes it sound like the sheriff was a co-conspirator.

Was the bearded a— ranting about the Ku Klux Klan aware that the Klan was established by southern Democrats who lacked the stuff of the James brothers. But the Klan was begun by Democrats as a means to keep the Republicans from drawing too many of the southern blacks away from the Democratic Party politic. and KKK Robert Bird unless I am mistaken was Southern Democrat and Klansman.

IMO anybody who is a dupe of CAIR is an unindicted terrorist.

During Peter King’s hearing today, freshman Rep Chip Cravaack R-MN asked Baca if he was aware of CAIR’s terrorist ties. Baca said, “No.”

I was stunned. Link to Cravaack’s hard-hitting questioning of Baca.

Very interesting. Sheriff Baca was not aware of it but most law enforcement in the country and any FReepers who have followed radical Muslims are aware of it. Doesn’t say much for Baca.

I forgot to mention in my post that Peter King brought up CAIR in his opening statement!!! I think Baca was in the room. (sleeping? or lying?)

"I have repeatedly said the overwhelming majority of Muslim-Americans are outstanding Americans and make enormous contributions to our country. But there are realities we cannot ignore. For instance a Pew Poll said that 15% of Muslim-American men between the age of 18 and 29 could support suicide bombings. This is the segment of the community al Qaeda is attempting to recruit.

To combat this threat, moderate leadership must emerge from the Muslim community. As the Majority and Minority staff of the Senate Homeland Security Committee concluded in its report on "Violent Islamist Extremism and the Homegrown Terrorist Threat", "Muslim community leaders (and) religious leaders must play a more visible role in discrediting and providing alternatives to violent Islamist ideology."

This means that responsible Muslim-American leaders must reject discredited groups such as CAIR - The Committee on Islamic-American Relations which was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the terrorist financing case involving the Holyland Foundation.

In the leadup to this hearing I found it shocking and sad that the mainstream media accepted CAIR's accusations as if it were a legitimate organization. Thankfully, FBI Director Mueller has ordered the FBI to cease all dealings and contact with CAIR. I would hope that all law enforcement officials would follow the lead of the FBI Director.
