Originally, it was reported as 7.9 magnitude but has been updated to 8.8. The Richter scale is logarithmic. An 8 is 10 TIMES bigger than a 7, so this is a very power quake.

Watching that water come in and wiping out everything in it’s path, is just heart wrenching. God be with the people of Japan and everywhere the tsunami is going to be.

It’s sad to see the aerial footage where moving (i.e., obviously occupied) vehicles get swept up in the debris wave.

Tsunami warning right now for here on Maui and all the Hawaiian islands. If it should hit here they say it will be about 3 AM. More update at midnight , I is 10 PM here in Maui as I write this. Not going to get much sleep tonight. I live only 7 ft. above sea level so am definitely in the tsunami zone. I have friends on higher safe ground so if I have to leave in the middle of the night, I have a place to go. These things usually peter out but still, not worth thumbing our noses at it. Aloha all

I heard from my brother, that he was sleeping in his office in Tokyo, but nothing since for all of today. I feel drained from thinking about it, praying, hoping all is okay. His wife is expecting a baby and I’m sure she is so worried at their home outside the city.

I just heard from him via email!

“Stayed night in office. Now on train back home on sat at 1030 am. What a day. I was stuck so got drunk last night with somee other forginers and told stories of the day.... I heard. This was biggest quake in the ring of fire sine 852 AD. 1200 years ago wow.”

That’s my brother!

(Thank you, God!)

Prayers for all those still in survival mode and who are suffering in Japan.

amen

So glad he is OK!

The stories on the news about the people trapped, injured, missing or presumed dead in the northeast areas of Japan are heartbreaking. I do hope that the offers of help that have come from many many countries are giving comfort to the Japanese people.

I had a Japanese pen pal years and years ago when I was in high school and I was thinking of her all weekend. She was a wonderful person, sweet and super polite. I found myself wondering if she was still alive after all these years.
