(AP) — Officials at a Northern California prison believe an inmate found dead in his cell was killed by his cellmate. Officials at High Desert State Prison say the inmate was pronounced dead around 9:29 a.m. Thursday after being found unresponsive in his cell. Officials have not released the name of the inmate, but say he was serving 90 years to life on a conviction out of Riverside County for the aggravated sexual assault of a child.

He performed a public service imho, give him a nicer cell and a few extra conjugal visits.

By micro-managing the running of penal institutions, our courts make it possible for things like this to happen. Through the law of inintended consequences, our liberal courts have reinstated a de facto death penalty.

A pause while I shed a tear for this lost soul.

OK, I'm over it.

Somebody will probably file a lawsuit against the California prison system. Things tend to suck that way.

Maybe the liberal courts are intentionally circumvented by the penal system in egregious cases.

Agreed. This is a case where a jailbird clearly has a better sense of justice than our court system.

FWIW, the only reason for sparing child molesters the death penalty was initially to protect the children from further harm-- it gave the perps a strong disincentive against murder as an attempt to cover up their rape.

Justice has been served. It’s too bad it took inmates to serve it.

Could be Shawn David Yates.

Yates raped and assaulted real estate agent, whereas the article says whoever got whacked was in for sexual battery of a child. Sentences don't quite match either; Yates had 91 years-to-life, but the dead inmate had 90 years-to-life. Of course, a lazy reporter could easily mix the two up or "simplify" 91 years to 90. Maybe we'll get lucky and Yates will end up dead in addition to this guy...

No, I think you are right. Yates attacked and tried to kill an adult female, as you say. She committed the grave error of trying to earn an honest living.

Anyway, my mistake. Thanks for the correction.

I say execute the cellmate. His, ah, “public service” to the taxpayers of California notwithstanding, he’s in prison on 64 year-to-life rape conviction. He’s no better than the POS he culled.

Well, maybe Yates will turn up in a similar news story some day. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Bastard.

It’s a real shame his victim wasn’t a concealed-carry permit holder. Then the grave error would have been him trying to harm her.

Got news for ya Chief, serving 90 years to life in a California joint is arguably worse than death..

In fact, the California’s suicide rate is nearly *double* the nationwide prison suicide rate for good reason.

The fact is, California has some of the most severe criminal penalties, including three strikes laws which is likely the reason CA major cities have substantially less crime than major cities in other states.
