According to the Kyodo News Agency, via BBC, the official missing persons tally is around 88,000.
It's well known that a lot of people are simply stranded in the cities, including Tokyo, and in many cases the people are probaby safe. It's not clear how they're included in the number.

I’m expecting most of these people are stranded as the article mentions. I’m hoping the actual death toll is surprisingly low. I feel bad for those people in cars washed away by the tsunami. So horrible to watch.
I can’t imagine how anyone could have made any calculations to come up with this figure in what, 14 hours?

I agree. Seems there would be way too much widespread chaos to come up with any reasonable numbers this soon.

It seemed quite obvious that the death toll would go up, but the news reports I saw at first weren't really hinting at that. But 88,000 seems *ahem* much higher than I would expect. I hope it's too high, anyway.
That’s the big difference, I think, between the building standards of first-world versus third-world countries. Japan was rebuilt almost entirely in the post-war period and they used sound modern engineering techniques and materials. But a place like Iran has a major quake and the simple stone and mud buildings are wiped out, killing people by the tens of thousands.
I saw that picture on Drudge - not the one he has up now, but one he had up this morning - of a wave going over houses, and couldn’t imagine then how anyone could survive something like that, much less the entire scope of the tsunami that wasn’t even captured in that image. There would just be no hope of survival if you were outdoors at the time (or even indoors, I’d think). I don’t want to believe a number like 88,000, there’s probably a lot of confusion and people just not accounted for right now, but it’s going to be a terrible number either way. Just a horrible, horrible event.

helo coverage showed the disaster in Sendai as it was happening, showed little sign of movement or life after the massive first wave went through. One poor soul waving a white towel out her window in an entire city block
They should get better idea of survivors at light tomorrow

Isn’t it just like Ubama and the rats to explode an underwater nuclear device off the coast of Japan in order to cause an earthquake which in turn would cause a tsunami that would reach Hawaii and conveniently wipe out the state’s Hall of Birth Certificate documents?

One clip they show of vehicles being washed away were cars and vans waiting to be shipped overseas. No people in them.
There is a train still missing however.
It's because with communications down, names are being understandably added to the missing persons registry.
If i knew someone in Japan in the quake/tsunami zone that I couldn't reach, I'd enter their name in the registry.
