Gang Rape Story Lacked Balance (says NYT public editor)
New York Times ^ | March 11, 2011 | ARTHUR S. BRISBANE

Posted on 03/12/2011 3:22:24 AM PST by reaganaut1

The story quickly climbed The Times’s “most emailed” list but not just because of the sensational facts of the crime involved. “Vicious Assault Shakes Texas Town,” published on Tuesday, reported the gang rape by 18 boys and men of an 11-year-old girl in the East Texas town of Cleveland.

The viral distribution of the story was, at least in part, because of the intense outrage it inspired among readers who thought the piece pilloried the victim.

My assessment is that the outrage is understandable. The story dealt with a hideous crime but addressed concerns about the ruined lives of the perpetrators without acknowledging the obvious: concern for the victim.

While the story appeared to focus on the community’s reaction to the crime, it was not enough to simply report that the community is principally concerned about the boys and men involved – as this story seems to do. If indeed that is the only sentiment to be found in this community – and I find that very hard to believe – it becomes important to report on that as well by seeking out voices of professional authorities or dissenting community members who will at least address, and not ignore, the plight of the young girl involved.

Let’s consider the particulars:

The story by James C. McKinley Jr. reported that residents of the town noted the girl dressed “older than her age,” wore makeup and fashions “more appropriate to a woman in her 20s” and hung out with older boys at the playground.

The story also quoted one resident, saying, “Where was her mother? What was her mother thinking?”

Referring to some of the defendants in the case, the same resident was quoted saying, “These boys have to live with this the rest of their lives.”

I’m tired of all the pandering to certain vermin.

Compare every aspect of this case and both it’s coverage and colorage to the ‘alleged’ Tawanna Brawley fiasco . . .

Skills are rarely set in stone — with the will, even adults can better their skill (I’m a poet and don’t know it). Attitude problems rule the day. Years of so called “advancement” of historically American people of black hue actually taught them (and with the full knowledge of the communistic movements that seized the power vacuum that much American religion sadly left) that they were trapped. As modern day immigrants from African lands have repeatedly shown by their successes, that idea of being trapped by your skin color is horse hockey.

They can’t operate in remote rural areas; movies have convinced them they’ll be set upon by hill folk with six rows of teeth and three eyes apiece.

They need a large pool of easy prey, so they’ll stick to well-lighted mall parking lots and such; they’re limited to hunting in places where single women would feel safe traveling.

Sooooo..........if she'd actually been in her 20's...the gang rape would be okay. Really?

If my son was involved in something like that, I’d be livid. But the members of that community ... mostly women, had the worst things to say about the girl.

And, yes, I think the residents of that town were racist. They sounded like it was all about race.

I keep wondering about the bizarre scene in the bizarre play called “The Vagina Monologues” in which, if I understand the reports correctly, the only man viewed as not worthy of mere scorn is the one who is enslaved to the point of drooling by his passion for the “female organs.” It doesn’t take an Albert Einstein to tell you that this sort of world view is a recipe for trouble.

“The DC-area sniper case was cracked after one of the suspects called police and mentioned that they were responsible for the Alabama robbery-murder. Investigators in Montgomery were able to match a fingerprint found on a weapons magazine in a parking lot outside the liquor store to Malvo’s immigration records. After connecting Malvo to the Montgomery killing, authorities traced him to a school in Bellingham, Washington, then to a home in Tacoma where he lived with Muhammad. Police then linked the sniper team to Mohammad’s blue Caprice which was registered in New Jersey. That night police broadcast a description of the suspects and the vehicle that lead to a trucker calling police and saying he had spotted them in a Maryland rest stop.”

We were all just watching for black guys [likely Muzzies] with guns skulking around in the woods from day 1.
[something you NEVER see here]

A former FReeper named Zygoat posted here as it was happening in real time.
He started a thread about the fact that I-70 was closed, east and west bound and that there were cops, feds, choppers and everything in between swarming the rest stop.

I miss Zygoat.

The Africans do put them to shame, and many despise American blacks for how they’ve sqyuandered opportunities they could only dream of back in Africa; while American blacks may attribute their shortcomings to racism (they often view Africans as “white” because of their command of the English language), they know that for whatever reason they do not have the skills to make the case to a company that hiring them would benefit the bottom line.

The fact that their feeble excuse holds no water doesn’t deter them from using that rather than admitting personal failure.

It used to be; now landlords in suburban areas are starting to rent to them here in NJ because many taxpaying Americans are fleeing the state (due to taxes and the fact that the jobs are leaving). There are areas in Sussex County (farming area in northwestern NJ, along NY & PA borders) with a lot of “Section 8” housing - but not in tenements.

"Still happens in MD."

Yup.

The other night the local B-more station had a story about the "East Coast Rapist". Even though he had been already captured, all they put up on the screen was the police artist sketch!

Surely there was a mug shot available? They had one for Willie Horton, didn't they?

… the girl dressed “older than her age,” wore makeup and fashions …

Sounds like the excuse used by Muslims.

[you forgot the vicious packs of hound dogs living under every porch]....LOL

Bummer.

They’ve got more sense than we thought.

:)

Wanna hear something “funny”?

Ever since we got Castle Doctrine, the paper’s police log is strangely short of B&E reports.

Imagine that.

Coincidence, I’m sure.

I didn’t know the girl was Hispanic until I read an account the other day in the Houston Chronicle about Quanell X, the local “community organizer” who for about $10K can get a “rent a mob” to your group’s political grievance function ASAP.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/tx/7467292.html

“.....Thursday’s meeting was led by Quanell X, an activist prominent in Houston’s black community. He told the audience of more than 130 people who had packed a small community center that the gathering’s goal was not to criticize the girl but to question the investigation by police, although he did question why she didn’t report the attack to authorities herself.

“I did not come here this evening to jump on an 11-year-old girl,” he said.

The activist, who was invited to speak by a local pastor, said he was concerned that only young black men had been arrested. He said he believed some of those arrested were guilty but that others were not. He told those in attendance that if they were questioned by police about the case that they should only talk to police with a lawyer present.....”

And that’s a “human” failing, not a “black” failing. I don’t know of any place in which white people are more cordial to black people than the USA. It’s probably going to take some big mutual disaster to end the pity party. (Obama might be it.)

God’s Word says the Man is to be the leader in all things and the Woman, his help-meet.

I’ve got -no- problem with that at all.

Anything short of that is messing with God’s divine plan.

[risky business, that, at best]

I haven’t had the misfortune of reading anything specific about the VM nor do I care to.

Just the name puts me off.

Yeah.

I saw those sketches.

They were rather “racially ambiguous”, I thought.

The fact that prominent “black leaders” are excusing, even justifying this is scary, it is the kind of multiculturism most damaging to society.

If the American middle class sees "black leaders" trying to justify the gang rape of an 11 year old, it will be more damaging to race relations than these leaders could ever imagine.

I’ve run into a few -real- “African Americans” in town and they are *the* nicest, most polite, kind, happy and warm-hearted people you’ll ever meet.

They are simply *over joyed* to be in this great country.

You can’t help but walk away misty-eyed and humbled.

Even here in NJ there are rarely confrontations; in the suburbs the crimes are often done while the taxpaying resident is out earning enough to feed the perps’ broods...
