Best self-defense handguns typically conjure thoughts of high priced custom handguns. But in reality, you can get great self-defense handguns for under $500. In this collection, we'll look at affordable quality for any budget. And while these handguns may not be built by master gunsmiths, we'll submit that combat accuracy and rock solid reliability can both be achieved with any handgun on our list. And with that, let's look at the best self-defense handgun for under $500. Note that prices are based on December, 2010 survey of top online handgun selling sites (e.g. Buds' Gun Shop & Gun Broker).

12 Ga. Double?
A stolen Uzi. ; )
The late great Dan S. Defense, of recent ZOT fame.
a bare bones new 1911 for around $350-400
nothing beats a .45ACP
probably need to get an imported one for that price...
Any .357 mag from Taurus.
There aren’t any (unless they’re stolen.)
I’d have to go with the Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge for the long-gun choice. For a handgun, under $500 a Glock Model 22 (.40 cal). If you are willing to spend a bit more, a standard GI spec. 1911 is really a better choice.
THIS is one gun to avoid like the plague!
Is the Stoegar Cougar at about $400 any good? ( Formerly Beretta Cougar). It is available in 9mm, .40 S+W, and .45 ACP.
Agreed. No better all purpose weapons than the Mossbergs, or similar shotguns of other manufacturers. I’m trying to buy specific Mossberg 590 Series and the 930 series. Hard to find for some reason.
A pistol crossbow.. would work fine in some/many occasions..
springfield arms xd subcompact in .40 cal....about $475.00 brand new in the box.... made by a real american company
CZ 82 220$ you cant beat it.
Here come The Judge
Ow. Just ow.
Rem 870, a good knife and lots of ammo.
I have the 9mm, great pistol and buy.
Yeah, I’ve heard great things about that piece.
Mine is an H&K USP Compact 40cal. A little over $700.00 three years ago, but I’m guessing over a thousand nowadays. And plenty of high capacity mags.
Sig P6 or 225
I have several pistols, only one of which cost near $500. and it is a CZ 2075 RAMI, damn nice CC 9mm.
If you are truly interested in a nice, effective, and affordable pistol, particularly for CC, I would advise a BERSA Thunder .380 or the BERSA Thunder .380CC. I own both, never leave the house without at least one of them and have put thousands of rounds through both without one hiccup. In reality, their entire line, including the Firestorm line are good.
Just Google Bersa Thunder .380 for sale. They run around $265 - $325. I Have turned allot of my friends at my gun club onto these and now more than a dozen of them use these for CC and home defense. They all love them and you can not bea the price. If you want a similar pistol with a full punch they make a Carry 9MM and a .45. But, in all reality the .380 (9MM KuRZ)will stop most problems and is a damn sight easier to carry. I have had pistols that have been four and five times as expensive that have jammed, FFF, FFE, or simply where so touchy they required only top of the line ammo.
Check one out, you won't be disappointed.
“made by a real american company...” in Croatia!
CZ 75 P01 - $350
There, fixed it.
“bacon gun. definitely under $500”
Depends on your insurance policy.
That new 14 rd double-tubed 12 gauge is my new dream!
Don’t know if Rock River Arms is imported, but you can get one for that....
The Springfield XD’s are made in Croatia. Some of their 1911’s are made in Brazil, and all of the 1911’s they manufacture in-house are made from slides and frames forged in Brazil.
Their M1 and M1A rifles have receivers made from imported castings, not domestic forgings.
One edition of Gun Digest a few year ago referred to Springfield Arms Inc. as a firearms importer.
It’s over $500. But I Know what you mean. It’s on my Christmas list.
The new (relatively) Ruger SR-40. 15+1 rounds. easiest shooting .40 S&W caliber pistol I’ve ever owned. Comes with two 15 round magazines. Picked mine up for $425. The handle (grip) feels like my 1911 Springfield.
They also point very naturally for me so I hit well with one. I've been meaning to get a couple more...
Thank you. Any discussion of valued priced handguns that doesn’t include CZ is worthless.
No one mentioned the Beretta 92FS.
RE: CZ 82 Its also easy to takedown and clean and built to last. Ammo is pretty cheap too. If you get it online.
Read the thread title, then Google the price of the 92FS.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Glock.
Pistol - Bersa Thunder
Shotgun - Mossberg 500
Carbine - Kel Tec Sub 2000 or Hi Point Carbine
Auto Rifle - SKS or Saiga
I have a Rock Island 1911 that cost me something like $375.Shoots great and accurate.
Handguns should be your first, but short-term option for self-defense, until you can get to the nearest long-gun.
I really love my little PFH90, never leave home without it. It allows you to attach a little belt clip so that it doesn't even require a holster.
I have put about 1000 rounds thru it so far. While I did have one bullet that would not fire, it had nothing with the gun I jot got some bad ammo.
9mm at Wal-Mart is about as cheap as it gets.
It’s mine - as soon as I can find one in a gunstore!
Rock Island Armory 1911 ($389)
Remington 870 ($270)
CZ-750 around $500 or so.
They say third quarter this year. If you get one, please post pictures and ping me. The way expenses keep coming up I think pictures are as close as I am going to come for a while.
