L. Ron Hubbard was born 100 years ago today (vanity)

Posted on 03/13/2011 8:46:01 AM PDT by Borges

All I could find in the media was PR garbage issued by his 'church' which I didn't think was worth posting. But it's still a good time to ponder this strange Sci-Fi cult.

I was working on a low budget pilot being shot outside the so called Scientology "Celebrity Center" in Hollywood and needed to use their restroom......BADLY!!

Of course once inside the human drones milling around try to convert you by urging you to find your full potential etc etc. If you do manage to evade any members while inside, have no fear....cuz there were high def flat panel televisions on almost ever wall in the near 100 year old historic building including the restrooms extolling the virtues of Scientology and Dianetics! Yup, just like in some sci-fi movie.

The creepiest thing tho was when I walked by a very posh well apportioned office that had it's doors wide open. I asked one of the drones who's office it was and he replied with a creepy smile on his face...."Oh...That's Mr. Hubbard's office.....we keep it ready for when he returns!"

I replied with a pondered and puzled....."Oh.....OK. Thanx" and slowly walked away and never returned.

My favorite cinematic portrayal of Scientology is in the Steve Martin / Eddie Murphy movie, Bowfinger.

“How he did it remains a mystery.”

Not a mystery at all...you only need to read “mission earth”...he lays the whole thing right out there wrapped in fiction...(redundant I kow)

This article about Elron's 1940 "expedition" to Alaska< cites the (local) Ketchikan Chronicle's September 1, 1940 edition:

"Capt. L. Ron Hubbard, author and world traveler, arrived in Ketchikan
in company with his wife aboard the vest pocket yacht, Magician. His
purpose in coming to Alaska was two-fold, one to win a bet and another
to gather material for a novel of Alaska salmon fishing. "According to Captain Hubbard, several associates maintained it would be
impossible for him to sail a vessel as small as the Magician, which is a 27-foot
auxiliary sloop, to Alaska. Knowing the smallness of the boats which take
this route, Captain Hubbard covered their bets and now that he has arrived,
will have the satisfaction of collecting.

He charmed a local bank for a loan that he apparently never repaid.

The link has an old photo of Captain Hubbard

Agreed. It’s the only Hubbard I’ve read, and it was very good.
Horrid movie, though.

Cheers

I admire the man because he knew human nature and our gullibility for him to make millions. He laughed all the way to the bank. Unfortunately, the feeble minded take him seriously.

***I had heard once that it was a bar bet between Heinlein and Hubbard: L Ron said he could start a religion out of nothing.

Always wondered if true.***

Well, Hubbard wrote Dianetics.
Henlien wrote STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND, about an earthling from Mars who teaches new things to earthlings, like water sharing. Save your time. It is not worth reading.

I liked that Travolta movie “Battlefield Earth” - don’t ask me why...it could have been better, but, could have been worse too...
I watched it after reading scads of bad reviews and exclamations of how horrendous it was and you know what? I found it to be a fair-to-middling B grade movie with a plot that moved along enough to follow it through to the end.

Compared to a hundred (or a thousand) other movies that (because of political correctness or hollywood correctness or both) get rave reviews that are completely unearned, I found "Battlefield Earth" at least watchable.

How many downright pieces of garbage do the liberal reviewers fawn all over (and I'm not talking JUST about "Brokeback Mountain") with lousy acting, lousy story, lousy directing, lousy everything, and yet they get rave reviews because not a single one of the liberal reviewers dare point out the lack of clothes?

To me "Battlefield Earth" showed the absolute shallowness of the entire movie-review industry. Again, not because I thought "Battlefield Earth" was great or even good, but because it was better than a hundred or a thousand other films that rated high and because it was no where near as bad as "they" made it out to be.

Sorry for the rant. I'm certainly no fan of any L Ron (either Hubbard or Paul) and I can take or leave Travolta depending on the role.

But what I really hate are the pretentious know-it-alls who run and review Hollywood.

Pretty much wraps up my feelings on the movie - it wasn’t great but it wasn’t awful either - I couldn’t care any less about L Ron Hubbard...I’ve seen worse movies - lots worse.

It was on Starz or somewhere this past week and I watched it again (no commercials-nothing else on...)Of course it has flaws but it was semi useless entertaining.

Don’t get me started on Ishtar - lol
