Food prices have been creeping higher for years - the contents per can/box/carton etc has been decreasing for years as well - we are paying higher prices for less product. My supermarket has a section where you can buy day old fruit/veggies etc. - the fruit and veggies used to be 99 cents a package, didn't matter how much was in the package - 4 oranges, or 3 squash, hell you could get a whole bag of potatoes for 99 cents - the price is now $1.49 per pound - the elderly used to crowd around these shelves and scoop up some great deals - now not so much - the supermarket would change the product every few days - now it just sits there because a lot of elderly can't afford the prices.

If you have even a small yard, you could buy a couple blueberry bushes. They take little room and if you feed them your used coffee grounds, and pick the ones that get ripe as they do, you can have fresh blueberries from mid July - October.

By picking them as fast as they ripen they will keep putting out new berries. Two small bushes will give you over a quart of berries a week for months.

Not surprisingly, it's difficult to find any information that explains this in laymen's terms. As egregious as this bill is, along with the sell-out by House and Senate R's, there is a lot of conflicting and confusing information out there.

What I did find though is that there was a late amendment that exempted "...producers who sell locally [~400 mile radius], less than $500,000 a year.".

However, there is some hope, if the R's in the House don't fund the $1.4B bill. Of course that's not a permanent fix.

What I've not been able to confirm [through legitimate sources, not blogs or the like], is the seed "issue". One reader claimed to have searched the actual bill for the word "seed" and couldn't find anything in the bill that prevented the purchase, storage or use of heirloom seeds.

Are you aware of any legitimate information on the seed "issue"?

BTW, there’s more than water in those cans of tuna. The “water” is actually SOY based vegetable broth. Canned tuna is off my list - I’m allergic to soy. Read the labels. A can of soy free tuna at Fred Meyer is over $5.

I buy sugar at Sam’s in 50 lb. bags as a matter of routine, since I do alot of jelly and jam making. After the prices settled after the spike a couple of years ago, I bought 150 lbs. to keep as a part of my cache of food, and I use the FIFO method for use. Sugar is much cheaper when purchased in bulk and it does not go bad.

Where do you live? Our here ground chuck is $3.39, chuck roasts are $3.99, pork chops are $4.49 and chicken breasts are $2.99. Milk is regularly $3.29 per gallon or $1.99 1/2 gallon. Navel oranges (crappy quality) are $1.89, apples (we grow them here) $1.99, zucchini $2.99, lemons $1.49 each!

You are to free to assume whatever you wish. Lots of people jump to ridiculous assumptions based on a few sentences in a post. Join the crowd are you suggesting inflation now is as bad as the 70s?

Not saying you don't shop at grocery stores, but there is no way food is up only 3% to 4%. I personally do think things are as bad as the 70's. So much is different now that the problems are being masked, at least for the time being.

So what's different now? For starters, both parents typically work, food stamps are now very easy to get, more fuel efficient cars and the ability to telecommute, craig's list makes buying second hand easier, and more options where to spend your grocery dollars - from warehouse clubs to walmart to dollar stores.

The price of the twelve items used for illustration in the article is up 18 percent. I wish it were only 3 to 4 percent.
